Chapter 8

Sofia Xanders ~

"A burden?" Grace alleged giving out a little titter. "The fact that you are really new around here doesn't mean that you'll be a burden to anyone who dims it fit to assist you to get back on your feet." "I can help you get a job here and your own apartment. That is if you want me to?" she said making the car turn.

"A job? What's a job?" I asked totally oblivious of what the term was.

"You're joking right?" she replied giving out another chuckle. "I don't know if you have another meaning of the word 'job' where you come from but here, that's how mostly everyone makes some money to cater for their needs." she added.

Until now, I had no idea that both the world that I came from and this world were completely different. I expected a few variances but come on, a job? I don't remember having one of those. If I did, it would be my royal status as the vampyre queen.

Until after I crossed over the portal with Elena, the world I knew wasn't like this. There was hardly a tree to be seen. Everywhere was occupied by big and tall erect structures.

"Oh! Then having one sounds really nice." I replied.

For the rest of the drive to her home, there was dead silence between the both of us. The only thing that I heard was the sounds made by young Elena or in this world, Red. At a point, I thought that she had an interior motive for helping me, a total stranger to her and this world.

I'm so grateful for all she says and plans to do for us both but I can't seem to kill the feeling that tells me that she has an interior motive. Maybe I'm just being too paranoid. Maybe it's just fate. It can't be a mistake or a coincidence that she came along few minutes after I emerged out of the portal stranded and confused.

Or could it?

"We're here."

Carefully, I came down from the car and fixed my gaze on a very big and very beautiful building. Lights came forth from strange objects and illuminated the outer area. We passed a gate that was so well-designed that it was shining as it reflected every light ray that went towards it.

"Where is this?" I asked with an anxious look.

"My home." she replied walking up the porch.

"Are you some sort of queen around here? This place looks so magnificent." I added following her from behind with Red in my arms.

"… Ha! … Ha!" "Thanks for the compliments but I don't see myself being a queen now or anytime at all." She said before pressing a button on the wall beside the door.

"… Ding! Dong! Ding!" a short time came afterwards before any sort of reply showed up.

"Honey, I'm home." she yelled pressing the button again.

"… Coming dear." came a male voice that seemed hard to hear from the outside.

Within another ten seconds of standing with Red, a tall muscular and good-looking man came to answer the door. He opened the door for us both to enter into the building. He was trying to hide the fact that my presence was having an effect on him but I was quick to notice his gluing eyes.

"Hi!" I said bashfully as our eyes met.

"Hi?" he returned the greeting using his eyes to devour every inch of me like I was some sort of demon. "Grace???" he added giving a fixed gaze at the lady that I presumed to be his wife for a somewhat explanation.

At that moment, I felt so ashamed and honor-less. He didn't need to say it in person that my presence caused him some discomfort. His eyes said it all.

"… Mark, this is Flora and her child, Red." started off Grace with a considerable smile. "I know that I have some serious explanation to do here but right now, allow me to show them a room." "It's getting late." she said holding the man's hands and swinging them in hers in a flirt-ish sort of way.

"I'll be waiting." was all the man said with a face that expressed mixed feelings before he exited the living room for all I, Red and Grace. "Gar is sound asleep. It wasn't easy getting him go to bed at a time like this so please try not to wake him up, okay?" he added turning back to Grace before he left towards another room in the building.

"Who's Gar?" I asked with an arched brow after the man had left.

"He's my son. He's turning two years old tomorrow and Mark promised a grand celebration so I guess that was why he was up so late….. excitement." She replied walking past the living room heading to a set of stairs that stood nearby.

I walked right behind her with Red in my arms. It was a lot surprising how she had slept so soundly all these time being born just about an hour ago.

"I can tell that you feel so….. So not at home here. I understand but you need to relax yourself. Somehow. I have had the urge to help you out ever since I saw you walking down the street with that muddled face. I just can't place my finger on the feeling but neither do I have control over it." "Let's just say that fate wants you here." she said giving a light laughter afterwards.

Grace had no idea that I felt the same way. Since I step foot here, I can't help but feel like I know them both. This is my first time in the human world so there's so little probability that we have met before. I'm not a witch or at least I don't have the powers of one in this world so I can't figure out why.

"Fate!" I repeated with a chuckle. "Or the moon goddess." I whispered to myself.

We walked together until she stopped me at a door indicating that it was where I and Red would be staying for the mean time.

"I can't thank you enough... Grace." I said after placing Red on the mattress as I gave Grace a goodnight hug.

"Don't mention it. After all, we ladies have to watch each other's back. I hope Mark gets so understanding." She replied in a tone that made me think that surely, it was fate that had brought me here and nothing not even her husband was going to be an obstacle to my residing.

"Good night!"
