Chapter 21 - ~ TWENTY-ONE ~

Sheylia's P.O.V

"Why is my son being arrested?!" my aunt screams to the police officers at the front door.

"Well you see ma'am, he sexually assaulted a young lady," the taller police officer said. I fixed my eyes back on my aunt. All the colour fled her face, leaving her looking like a corpse. Her mouth hung open, shocked. Her brown eyes filled with tears. I watched as the tears started overflowing out of her eyes. I turn my head away, not wanting to cry as well.

"Do you know who he assaulted?" My aunt quietly asks. Both police officers turn and look at me. I suddenly feel so small with everyone's eyes on me. Staring at me.

"Yes we do," they say in unison.

"Well can you tell me or is that confidential?" My aunt asks.

"He assaulted Sheylia Klent," the shorter officer said, darting his eyes over to me then back to my aunt.

My aunt pauses. She looks at me but then chuckles and shakes her head.

"Huh? That's not true you must of got the names mixed up," she said.

"No, we are correct, her friend called us," he said.

"No no you're wrong, you're wrong!" My aunt says as she clenches her fist.

"No...they're right," I mumble, just loud enough for my aunt to hear. She places her gaze on me, looking at every detail on my face and body. I shift under her stare.

"What?" She asks, breaking silent tension.

"Lyde assaulted me," I say looking straight at her. Her eyes tear up again and she rushes towards me, embracing me in a hug. I push her away and take a step back, creating some distance between us. She looks at me shocked and confused. "I don't want people feeling sorry for me or worrying about me," I say.

"Oh.." is all she says. It was quiet again. "I'm sorry."

"No, I don't want you saying sorry," I say sternly. My aunt looks down.

"There will be court to see how long he will be in for, swing by the station later and we will have more information for you," the taller guy said.

"Mhm, okay.." my aunt says. Both officers leave, the door closing behind them with a slight bang. I stand there looking at my aunt who is still shocked about what just happened.

Suddenly she speaks.

"Why did he do it? Do you know?" My aunt asks.

"He said because he loved me.....more than a cousin," I say making the last part quieter.

"What?" She asks, eyes wide.

"I said, he told me he did it because he loved me more than just a cousin," I say now sounding a bit annoyed.

All these questions.

Just ask him for yourself.

You're his mother.

"But...." My aunt's voice trails off. I get up and leave.

Leaving her with Lara.

As I walk down the street to my house all I can think about is my parents reaction. Probably so many questions, sorry's, and I love you's. I groan. My house starts to come to view in the distance, once I get closer I see Gregory's car parked in the driveway.

I walk up the stone pathway and open the front door. As soon as I step in I am engulfed in a hug, taking me by surprise. I open my eyes and look behind the person who's hugging me's shoulder; my friends are all behind this person, looking at us. I pull away, making eye contact with my mother. Her eyes are tearing up but the tears haven't fallen yet. She just looks at me with such sad eyes.

"What did he do to you...." My mom barely let's out. I pause not knowing what to say.

"He assaulted me," I finally say.

"No, what did he do to you?" she asks with a bit more volume this time.

"I don't want to say," I say while looking down at my shoes.

"Don't worry you can tell me," my mom says.

"No I can't, I just don't feel comfortable," I say while moving my gaze up towards her.

"Com-" My mom gets cut off by Mia.

"She doesn't have to say if she doesn't feel comfortable," Mia says.

"I'm her mother! I deserve to know!" My mom suddenly yells, making me jump in my spot.

"Stop, just stop yelling, I will tell you when I'm comfortable and ready....that's just not right now, okay?" I weakly say.

My mother's eyes soften a bit.

"I see..."

"I'll wait.."

She hugs me again, tighter than before.

About thirty seconds later my mom lets go, looking me in my eyes she says,

"I'm sorry I didn't protect you.."

Her tears finally falling, dripping off her chin.

"Go up to your room, I got you something," my mom says through her quiet cries.

"We're going to go now Sheylia," Mia says. I nod. Mia walks towards me and hugs me tightly, "Text me later, okay?" She whispers.

"Okay.." I whisper back, tightening my grip around her body. She lets go and exits through the door. Heading to the staircase, I look back at my mother crying, I suddenly feel bad. Looking away I go upstairs and to my bedroom.

As I enter my bedroom I spot a small navy box placed on the edge of my bed. I get closer and examine it. Picking it up, I lift the top off and peek inside. I gasp lightly from the object in the box, a silver sapphire necklace placed neatly inside.

In awe, I gently pick up the necklace and walk up to the mirror. I delicately clasp the necklace together. The silver beautifully contrasting with the deep blue, I look at my reflection in the mirror and smile.

Suddenly, I break down crying.

Tears.

Tears just kept falling.

Running down my cheeks, dampening them.

My reflection, blurry.

My throat, sore.

Finally, my cries quieting down.

Tears drying.

Eyes puffy.

I let out a shaky breath as I push myself up from the floor and slowly walk to my bed.

I crawl onto my bed and pull the blankets up to my face.

I haven't slept all day.

The crying reminding me of how tired I am.

Tightly gripping the blankets, I flutter my eyelids closed and let my body relax from all the tension, and pain, and sadness, and fear.

My thoughts and feelings, fading.

My grip on my blankets loosening as I fall asleep.

My dreams holding my hand.

Pulling me away from this cruel dark world.
