A blaring ball of burning fire blazed down on hills of sand farther than the eyes could see. The sand radiated heat and caused distorting waves to make the sand look like rippling gold in the dry and arid air. There were no birds or beasts, bugs or snakes, just a suffocating heat and a sense of thirst that could not be quenched; even a cactus would have wilted in this inhuman head.
This place was only sand in the middle of Nowhere, and Three gods stood arguing with one another about recent events. Diagon was furious with both of the other gods at their latest round of interference. For their part, both gods looked indignant, Belzenrog hadn't actually done anything this time, The Dark-Eyed-Ones had captured the people on their own whims, but Diagon didn't care at this point.
"Why do you insist on constantly causing problems?" Diagon asked with a stern expression on his sculpted face. "You and Belzenrog have lost our ways as gods to our people, and you only seem interested in causing strife and conflict."
"That's not true, " Kiratorpelis said with a half-cocked smile. "You can't compare me to that brute. I only try to spread my love and gifts."
As she finished speaking, they noticed a small shadow forming on the ground that was beginning to get larger around them. It was like a cloud was growing larger in front of the sun. The massive corner of a brink yellow mountain slammed to the sand, causing both Diagon and Belzenrog to be blown back and away. Kira didn't have time to react, no amount of speed could save her from this Divine Punishment.
A massive triangular Mountain had just fallen and drove Kiratorpelis deep into the sand. It was tranquil for a short while as the torrents of sand settled, but then the sand at the edge of the massive structure started to move. A sputtering and cursing Goddess clawed her way out of the sand in a rage.
" Too bad it doesn't matter if they want your gifts, " Belzenrog scoffed at Kira as he reclined in a chair that had appeared as he sat down.
Kira was pulling herself up from the sand, still cursing profanities in a different language. Her gray dress was covered with small tears and sand granules that she was attempting to brush out. Diagon stood glaring at the two of them.
"Is your plan just to let the world die like it was already done? Were you not satisfied the first time? How many times must you watch our wards get slaughtered by this infection on our lands."
"If the planet dies, we just become caretaker for another rock full of ungrateful leeches. They are always begging for forgiveness or a pardon for the wicked things they do in our names. Does it matter who serves us? They all are the same in the end. What is the point of trying to save these wretched fools?" Belzenrog said, gesturing his hand towards Kira as she was shaking the remaining sand from her hair.
"This one even tries to guide them in their love efforts, and still they cry of the unfair and unjust gods. They pray that we stop interfering with their lives, so we do as they say and leave them be. So I went beyond the mountains and put forth my ideas to the Dark-Eyed-Ones, true masters of the chaos with their warring tribes. These people had all the tools to make this world far more interesting, but no means to reach beyond the great walls. So I gave them magic. I did not see why only half of the world should be allowed power."
Diagon was filled with anger at the stupidity of these gods, Why would It do this? Why give us a world to watch and tell us we could break it? Then send in there the boys to clean up the mess, and yet still allow us to interfere. None of it made sense, or maybe it did and he was just looking at it the wrong way.
"You two act as if your interest in this was strictly to help all the people of this world, yet one removes loved ones from happy engagements, while the other supplies one person to be able to dominate the other. You two should lose your places, not these peaceful people." Diagon said as he turned from them in disgust.
"You think you're all high and mighty, but you're no different than us. You may not have divided the people, but you also didn't help them. You're just as much to blame as us, " Belzenrog said, laughing.
It was true, as much as it gulled him to admit it, he had done nothing to help the dweller of this world. Instead, he became infatuated with one of the Prismantians women he had met in the northern forest and didn't realize what Belzenrog was doing until it was too late. His love had died in the cataclysm that followed the breaking of the world. Who had to answer for this injustice? If I had taken my duties more seriously, the balance of this world would have never been in this position in the first place. I am just as much a cause of this calamity as the other two, maybe even worse.
Now, he was forced to watch the events play out as they were. Not all was lost, though. The travelers were trying to figure out what went wrong and how they could stop it from killing everyone. Maybe he didn't deserve to be a god, but there might be a way to redeem himself. Maybe It lied, no one had ever said that It would always tell us the truth.
Were they all being tested? If so then the first time he failed miserably, but maybe this time he can change something. Diagon left the one he loved behind because he couldn't divide his attention.
The other two gods continued to bicker behind Diagon as he stared off into Nowhere, contemplating his next actions.
