It was all fun and games till the world turned on us. The government had seen a big meteor head to Earth. They didn't understand nor stop it. The meteor contained a gas that had surrounded the Earth. The gas had kill almost half of the population in the matter of seconds. But the other half of the population had changed. No one knew why but only the Adults had been affected by the gas. People now call it The Gas Melt Down. It's been fourteen years since this event had arrived but still till this day the government is still afraid and are still finding a cure to heal all the adults that they had captured.
"Good morning citizens. I first want to personally thank you for meeting me here on this fine day in May to discuss the future planned ahead. The parents that had changed are being tested to see if anything could be fixed. Still no results had come in as positive" The president says on the television.
I stair at the television unaware that my mother had been behind me. "Honey don't watch that." She said softly has she grabbed the remote and turned off the television.
My mother had never gotten any changes when the gas was unleashed. But I had found that hard to be true. My mother was tested many times for a change in her system, but nothing was ever found. She didn't tell me what had happened throughout the time of The Gas Melt Down. She told me that is was unsafe to know.
I got up from the couch and followed her into the kitchen. "Mom, I'm almost fifthteen, and when June 7th comes around I want you to tell me what happened during The Gas Melt Down. You always tell me you didn't change whan that can't possibly be true." I said sitting near the breakfast bar.
My mother froze for a moment in thought. Than spoke "Honey everyday you ask me what had happened during the event, and I keep saying no, and that answer will continue to stay that same as long as I live." She said as she had started to prepare my lunch for school.
"Mom, will you not say anything because of what happened to...dad?" I asked, speaking softly.
My father had been taken away when he was tested for a change. We don't know if he ever died or is actually still alive. But ever since that day, my mother had always secretly cried at night or had nightmares. Sometimes I would be able to hear her scream through the wall.
"Rose don't you dare ever ask me that question again. I told you so many times and I will tell you it again. It is unsafe for you to know of the event. Now go get ready for school or you will be late." She commanded.
I nodded and went upstairs to my room. After packing my things I turned on my television to finish watching the news in secret.
"We all know the time of this event was hard on all of us, even our children. But please, if you have seen any strange activity. Please let us know so we can fix the situation as soon as possible." The president said.
I turned off my television and grabbed my bag, than headed downstair. My mother was near the steps when I had came down. She gave me my lunch and pat my back to tell me to walk on off to school. I went out the door after waving at my mother.
Usually I would walk on my own to school. But as soon as I had close the door and turned around, I saw my friends Trevor and Sidney walking up the street I had lived on. As soon as they saw me We all headed to each other.
"Rose, hey. Sidney and I were just talking about what the president had said on the television this morning. Did you see it?" Trevor asked as we all kept walking.
"Well I watched most of it. My mom didn't want me watching it because of soe that happened to her in the past during the event. She says it's bad for me to know." I said looking at the street sign to see where we were.
"Oh. Your mom was the only person that didn't get affected in the event. My mom and dad was talking about it this morning. She said that your mother was on the news when they found out she was the first ever adult to not be affected." Sidney said in excitement.
"Your excited about that. But my mom isn't. She still has nightmares and screams in her sleep at night. It honestly scares me. The only thing I actually know about what happened during the The Gas Melt Down was that my father had got affected. I really don't understand why my mother won't talk about it. It's only been two years." I said as we enter the school grounds.
"Rose, they still haven't found the right cure. It's a little scary to know that, that type of thing might happen again. Just imagine that happening to not only the adults but kids to." Trevor said with a serious face.
"Trevor that's not possible. Kids/ teenagers like us can't get it. But you never know. What if whatever happened to the adults that made them change is something not to be afraid of. Those adults might just have amazing powers." I said in wonder.
"Well I guess we're never going to find that out." Sidney said shrugging her shoulders.
As we entered the building we all parted ways to go to our classes. I walked all the way down the hall to get to history class before the bell had rong. I sat in my seat that was in the middle of the class. I kept hearing people whispering about my mother and also about me.
"Class please quiet down and listen up. For today since this is of course history class. We are going to watch a video on the biggest event in our parents and our lives, The Gas Melt Down. After watching it your homework will be to write at least a paragraph or more on what you saw," The teacher said as he looked on his desktop screen.
After about five minutes the video had started to play.
The video had shown a young lady that had looked to be about 20 and a young man that looked like he was 23. I started going through my books of memories that I had sorted out in my mind throughout the time I was five years old. For some reason this video had looked familiar to me all though I had never watched it before in my lifetime. Than it had finally snapped in my head. This video was about my mother and father. I had felt a little off edge that my own teacher had been showing my own families history. But I had kept watching, interested in what was happening. I gazed at the two actors that had been playing my mother and father. There was one scene that had caught most of my attention.
It had looked like the actor that was playing my mother had finally found out that my father had been affected by the gas, It looked like throughout the video they were trying to keep it a secret from the government but during the journal my mom had a baby. Which I would guess was me. I was shocked by the information that was shown on the board. After about forty minutes of watching. The lights had finally came on mess with a little bit of my vision. As soon as I had gotten use to the light and opened my eyes. The teacher was standing in front of the classroom, as the whole room filled with whispers.
"Now now, please quiet down. We have about ten seconds of class time so I just want to remind you all of your homework assignment. One paragraph or more on what you said just saw today. It's due tomorrow. So it better not be late." THe teacher said as the bell had rung, giving three minutes to get to their lockers and than to their next classroom.
I walked out of the classroom thinking more and more about what I had seen in the video. I was so focused on what was shown in the video that I had barely heard Sidney calling my name.
"Rose....snap out of it. What's going on? You were just in space or something." Sidney said finally getting my attention.
"My teacher had shown me and the whole class a video of my parents history together. For homework I have to write one or more paragraphs on what I saw. How am I suppose to right about what I saw knowing it's about my families history?" I said in a worried voice.
"Well can't you just tell him what you just told me?" Sidney said in wonder and shock.
"I can't just ask for a different assignment. It would be unfair to the rest of the class." I said with worry coming from my voice.
"Than you really have no choice Rose. Do it or get a F." Sidney said before walking away, turning the corner so I wouldn't be able to see her anymore.
I didn't know what to do. But I have to tell my mother. She needs to explain what had happened next. If I'm going to write about my parents history, I need the full story.
