"Lily! Come on, hurry up or we're gonna leave without you!" Shouted Sarah
"Coming!" Lily shouted back
Running up to the door, Lily was wearing a green t-shirt with a frog on the breast pocket and jean shorts.
Max, Sarah and Lily walked out of the house together and walked along the streets of their homes.
They passed a grocery store, the bakery (Where the woman had seen her in the pink frilly dress), a park and school when they reached Max's house.
Max took out his key and unlocked the door, he pushed it open and they were knocked over by his huge dog named Tiger.
They pulled themselves up and Lily left them to go play with Tiger and Max and Sarah went to the kitchen, they could hear Max's parents talking from the same direction.
"Hey mom and day, I brought Sarah and Lily."
Turning around they saw Sarah and said "Sarah! Long time no see! We missed you!"
"Hey Ms. and Mr. Fredrickson!" Sarah said back to them
Turning to Max, his mom said "did you ask yet?"
"Yes, she said sure"
"Oh great! I'm so excited for you to join us on this trip!"
"Her mother had a condition tho"
"Oh of course, what is it?"
"She said something about telling Sarah what will happen on her 16th birthday, it's this Friday"
Max's mom and dad exchanged a nervous glance and turned to Sarah and said "is she sure about this? It should be her who tells you things like this"
"Yea, she's sure, se said to me that she is sorry that she can not bring herself to say it to me, something about how she might never see me again if i go on this trip without knowing about my 16th birthday" Sarah said
"Oh, well, ok, we can tell you but... Max, you need to leave"
"Why? Why do I need to leave? It's just about a birthday! Mine's coming up in 2 weeks, the other day I heard you talking to dad about my birthday and how you guys need to tell me something, is it the same thing? Why not just tell us together? Save you the hassle and nerves to do it a second time"
"Yes but, your father-" began Max's mom
"Tell him" interrupted his dad
"James..."
"Just say it, he would have found out eventually anyways"
'If you're sure..."
"I'm sure."
Grabbing her husband's hands and clearing her throat, she said "On your 16th birthdays your true fate will be revealed"
Sarah and Max exchanged confused looks
"You know how Max looks nothing like his father?" she asked
Max and Sarah said nothing
"Well, that's because James is not his father..."
Max sat with his mouth wide open "all my life, you guys have lied to me, why. WHY!" Max said as his anger grew
"To keep you safe!" Max's mom now had tears streaming down her face
"You wanna know why Sarah's dad left?" she said
"What does this have to do with Sarah?!" Max yelled, "Don't change the subject! You're not gonna get out of this conversation!"
"BECAUSE BOTH SARAH AND YOUR DAD LEFT FOR THE SAME REASON!"
"WHAT! What was so special that both of our dads had to leave?" This was Sarah talking now, she never imagined having this conversation with somebody other than her mom who would always change the subject whenever it was brought up.
"Because they couldn't stay" Max's mom was shaking and her husband wrapped his hands around her to stop her tears, whispering in her ear that it was gonna be ok, to stop crying, don't worry- Max will forgive us.
Max and Sarah realized that they both had stood up to yell, seeing Ms. Fredrickson's tears they sat down and stayed quiet until she could get her sobs under control.
"Your-" Her voice cracked "Your fathers, your father's are gods." she said
Max and Sarah were speechless
"We do not know their names or their powers, before they left, they told us that when we gave birth, a demigod would be born and we had to do something to block your powers until your 16th birthday, on your 16th birthday, when the device could no longer stop it, your powers will be released, and from then on we have to let you go"
She began to sob again, Sarah saw a tear silently slide down Max's dad's face but she didn't say anything.
Suddenly Sarah felt water on her hands, she looked down and more water ran off her face, leaving little dark spots on her jeans.
Sarah was crying.
Why would Sarah be crying?
She had just found out her past, she should be happy that she was a demigod.
what was a demigod anyways Sarah Wondered.
She looked over at Max, he was shaking.
She turned back to his parents and asked "What's a demigod?"
His parents looked up, surprised to find Sarah sitting there, like they forgot Sarah had been sitting there the whole time
She said "A demigod is a being who is half human, half god. Born with unnatural powers or extreme talents and knowledge"
"What is ours" This time is was Max who said something
Ms. Fredrickson had a hard time meeting his eyes but when she did she said, "I d not know, he said that he was forbidden to tell me what they will be"
"So he left- just like that. He left you to raise me on your own? Why? Because he was too busy to send some child support or something? Tch- what a terrible father."
His mother was stunned
"Well, he did leave you something Max, I have one for Sarah too, her mother asked me to hold onto it for her, she's always had a harder time than we when talking about this subject. I think we both knew that I was gonna be the one who told you this stuff."
Max's mother went to the kitchen, opening up a top cupboard she reached inside and took out the things being kept in it, she pulled out the shelf inside and brought it to the table and sat down.
Max and Sarah surrounded it and looked at it, it looked like any normal shelf insert, but on the part that would be hidden after being put into the cupboard for use, there was a little lock code, it had 10 numbered locks.
click.click.click.click.click.click.click.click.click.click.
She cracked it open and inside there were 4 envelopes and coins.
She handed them each a red envelope within official looking seal on them and gave a ratted up piece of paper with obvious water damage, probably from his mom's tears to max and a paper with brown edges, one that had seemed to hardly ever looked at, to Sarah.
"When your fathers left they left you each 3 things, both of you have the red envelope which Sarah's mom and I have been forbidden to read, a letter from your fathers and coins."
Remembering the coins in the secret shelf-lock box, Max and Sarah looked at them again. They had an eagle on one side and on the other there was a big D. The coins were gold and looked like they had existed for a long time.
"Well, we will leave you too with this, we're gonna go for a moment, after all we do not want to accidentally look at that red letter."
They walked out of the room and Max sat down at the table with Sarah at his heels. Together they opened the red letter first.
