"Never wake up?!" Sarah said incredulously.
"Well we do not know, she suffered some severe head trauma, with damage to the skull like this she may never wake up."
Sarah began to cry, "Mom! NO! Is there anything we can do?"
"No, nothing other than closely monitoring her vitals and let her rest peacefully."
"That's it? No pills she can take or anything?"
"No, I'm very sorry Ms. Benson but we are doing everything we can."
"Ok, Ok...Ok…" Sarah said, taking deep breaths to calm herself down.
"Ms. Benson, it has been a half hour since you were contacted last, have you been able to find a contact to give us?"
"No, not yet, I have been unable to contact anyone yet, give me an hour and then I will call you back with a number for you."
"Ok, if you do not call within an hour and a half I will be calling back this number."
"Ok, got it. Thank you for telling me."
"You are welcome Ms. Benson. I give you all my prayers and wishes for your mother to have a swift and complete recovery."
"Ok thank you" Sarah said before she hung up.
Sarah put her head in her hands. "What am I going to do?" Sarah muttered to herself.
"Sarah?" Said a soft voice.
Sarah picked up her head and turned to see Lily, peeking over at her, still inside of her doorway. Her hair mated, pajamas crumpled, and holding a stuffed whale in her arms.
"Oh, Lily. I'm sorry, did I wake you up?" Sarah said guiltily.
"No, I came out to use the bathroom when I heard you talking on the phone with somebody. Are you ok? You were crying, also is mom home yet? She didn't say goodnight to me." Lily said with a frown.
"No Lily, mom's not home yet and i'm ok, don't worry about me. Just go use the bathroom and go to bed, ok?
"Ok Sarah!"
Lily turned to go to the bathroom when suddenly, Sarah got an Idea.
"Lily?"
"Yea Sarah?"
"Who are your best friends?"
"My best friend? My best friends are Bella McHall and Malissa Trell."
"Ok, thanks Lils."
"Why do you need to know?"
"No reason, just curious."
"Oh, ok. Well, goodnight Sis.
"Night Lily."
Once Lily had gone back to bed she grabbed her phone and called Malissa's mom, she only had her number because once Lily had gotten grape juice all over herself and Sarah had to bring her clothes to change into. Lily had told Ms. Trell Sarah's phone number and Sarah had saved it in case she would ever need it. It was a good thing she did too.
Ring...Ring...Ring...Ring…
"Hello?" said a female voice
"Hi Ms. Trell, it's me, Sarah, Lily's big sister."
"Oh hello dear, what brings you to call me so late at night?"
"Well, I am sorry to be disturbing you so late but an accident just happened, my mother got into a car crash and has to stay in the hospital for a while and there is nobody who can stay with Lily. I have a trip that can not be cancelled, even for something as important as this. I was wondering if maybe Lily could stay with you for a week while I'm away?" Sarah asked.
"Oh honey, I am so sorry to hear about your mother but we also have a trip that we will be on that can not be canceled, we're going to be gone for a week and a half and we don't have enough space to take her with us. I'm sorry."
"That's ok Ms. Trell, thanks anyways!"
"Alright honey, well, you just don't hesitate to call us if you need anything, ok?
"Yes Ma'am."
"Goodnight Sarah… I really am sorry about your mother."
"Thank you Ms. Trell and goodnight to you too." Sarah answered as she hung up the phone and sighed and dialed Bella's dad's phone number. She had it because they took Lily with them on vacation with them once.
Ring...Ring...Ring...Ring...Ring...
"Hello?" Said a deep voice.
"Hello Mr. McHall."
"Hello Sarah, what brings you to call me so late at night?"
Sarah gave him the same speech that she gave to Ms. Trell about the car crash and Lily needing a place to stay for a week.
"Oh dear! That is terrible news! Of course Lily can stay with us!"
"Really?!" Sarah said, on the verge of tears from relief.
"Of course she can! But with you out of town do you need somebody for an emergency contact for your mother?"
"Yes."
"Well, you can but myself down for that, we would feel honored for your trust"
"Mr. McHall, thank you so much! Without you, I- I just don't know what I would do. This means a lot to me, we have no family around us to watch Lily for us and she's too little to stay home by herself for a week. Thank you, thank you!"
"Of Course! Now go and get some sleep, please drop Lily off before you go if possible."
"Ok, I will bring her around 7;30 if that works ok for you?"
"Sounds good!"
"Mr. McHall I can not thank you enough!"
"Anything for your family Sarah, goodbye."
"Bye" Sarah said right before she hung up the phone.
Sarah let out a breath of relief and went to her room to go back to sleep. She set her alarm for 6:30 am so she could wake up, get ready and help Lily pack the things she would need for the week.
-
BEEP---BEEP---BEEP
Sarah's alarm went off, she grumbled and rolled over, the annoying beeping sound still going off from the otherside of the room. Grumpy, Sarah rolled out of bed and landed on the floor. Sarah moaned in pain as she landed on her arm and stood up. She walked over to her alarm clock and randomly smacked buttons to make it stop but instead it just got louder.
"AHHHHH" Sarah yelled as she searched for the off button. When she finally found it she smacked the button with anger and stopped out of her room to go wake up lily.
Knocking on Lily's door lightly she pushed it open and said "Lily… Time to wake up!"
Lily rolled over to look at Sarah and said "Why are we up so early? Isn't it summer so we get to sleep in?"
"Exactly! It's summer! I have a surprise for you!" Exclaimed Sarah
"A surprise? What is it?!" Asked Lily excitedly
"You're gonna stay with Malissa for the week!"
"YAYYYY!!" Shouted Lily as she got up and ran around the room, waving her arms above her head like a lunatic.
"A whole week?!" Lily asked, unbelieving.
"A whole week." Sarah confirmed
"Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!" Lily said as she ran to Sarah and wrapped her arms around Sarah's middle, jumping up and down, squealing.
"Your welcome!" Sarah said chuckling, "Get packed! We're leaving in an hour."
"Yes ma'am!" Lily said, saluting her and holding her head high with a straight back, like a drill sergeant. Lily reached under her bed and pulled out her princess suitcase and started randomly throwing clothes into it.
Sarah laughed and shook her head. Turning to Lily she said, "Go pour us both some cereal, i'll pack for you."
"Ok! Don't forget my dragon costume!"
"Dragon costume? Why do you need your dragon costume?" Sarah asked
"To play dragon in the dungeon with Malissa of course!" Said Lily who had stated it like that was common knowledge.
"Right! Dragon suit, i'll pack that first."
"Ok!" Lily said as she skipped out of her room and into the kitchen.
Sarah was still smiling as she packed up Lily's suitcase. She added anything Lily might need such as extra t-shirts and pants, a pair of flip-flops and her favorite stuffed animal that Lily couldn't sleep without.
When she was done she drug Lily's suitcase by the front door, right next to hers. Walking back to the kitchen she sat next to Lily who had turned on cartoons and was sitting on the couch. She looked over at the kitchen counter where there were 2 bowls sitting there, one empty and the other half full. Colorful pieces of cereal were on the counter, next to the tipped over box, cereal spilling out of its side. The milk jug sitting on the counter, open and the refrigerator half shut.
