Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Otherworldly invitation

After the three of them entered the church, Soren and Lavenza saw the interior of the church itself, the saw that the halls had pure white walls and ceiling, with its floor being covered in an azure blue carpet. There were also some suits of armor that were holding tridents and spears on the sides of the hall. Occasionally, the three of them would also see priests or guard roaming through the area, but aside from that, they didn't see much.

After making their way towards a couple of flights of stairs, they made their way towards a big door and once they entered it, they were on a semicircled platiform with 4 sets of 6 chairs with the majority of them being already taken by people with fancy clothes.

"Your seat in the empty one over there. I hope you enjoy the summoning." After that, the man left Soren in the room.

Soren himself, felt like a fish out of water in this situation, since almost all of the people had costumes, dresses or any kind of famcy and frilly clothes, and he comes litterally with just some leather armor. He felt like was going to die from embarassment. The other nobles also gave him a menacing look while thinking the reason why such a guy was here, but after that, they stopped paying attention since they figured that someone must have brought him here through an invitation.

Once Soren sat down on the seat C-23, he saw that the platform itself was similar to those in the big theaters he had seen in the movies. The were more of those semicircled platforms with the same amount of seats. In total, Soren counted 26 platforms. The bottom area had a decent amount of rows of seats and there were hundreds of people sitting there. He also noticed that some of the people who were sitting there, were also wearing all kinds of armor pieces.

After looking around for a little while, he felt Lavenza rubbing on his chin feeling while looking a bit unsettled. Sore noticed that and asked quietly:

"Lavenza, what's wrong?"

"Kyuu~..." She was afraid for some reason. Soren wasn't too sure how to help her, so he decided to provide a few words of comfort.

"Don't worry Lavenza. If things go south, I'll protect you." Soren then patted her head, which helped her to calm down a bit.

*sigh* Soren sighed now, since he had to wait now for the summoning to happen and he didn't have anything to pass the time with. He didin't bother bringing anything to read and striking a conversation with any of the nobles was akin to suicide for him, since he was pretty afraid from their scornful looks at him, so who knew what kind of reactions would he get from them.

With nothing else to do, he decided to mess a bit with his mana. He had used it only once or twice and he never had any good chances to experiment with it. So for starters, he tried again pouring mana down to see how it looked for starters and it looked like a bluish mist was coming out of his hand. 'So that is how it looks.' Soren thought. That was interesting for Soren and the mana dispersed after a little bit. His next course of action was to see if he could cover himself in mana, so he tried imagining that mana was covering his entire hand and so it did, but it was blue mist that covered it. 'I was expecting it to create a thin layer of mana rather than coveing my hand in mist.' Soren thought. He wondered how it would be possible to change the misty form of mana into something more solid.

Suddenly, a woman with long purple hair and tail and red eyes, poked on his shoulder before saying:

"I know it's important to practise your magic and all, but please don't do that during a formal event. It is pretty distracting for all of us."

Soren was suprised by that. He thought that he wasnt drawing a lot of attention, but to think that it was this distracting, he felt extremely embarassed and said:

"I am sorry for annoying you."

"It's alright as long as you have learned your lesson." The woman answered back at Soren.

'Well, there goes my last bit of entertainment, now I guess I have to find something else to kill time with, at least until the summoning ceremony.' Soren thought while feeling dejected. But he did learn something small, covering yourself with mana can be very distracting. 'That was pretty useless.' was Soren's last thought on his little experiment before he sighed dejectedly.

...

'Compared to using this formula, the other formula would definitely provide better results but would come at a higher cost of mana. Those two are definitely trying for quality over quantity, but...' The woman was thinking on a topic about magic formulas for an assignment she gave. 'Uhhh... There are times when being an instructor is pretty hard, but that is when it is really worth it. To see the students trying their best and give also a difficult test for the instructor themselves, to see if they are still fair and know to do work.' The woman was thinking with a slightly happy expression on her face, when suddenly, the door opened and a young boy with a sea serpent entered the room.

'That is an interesting duo if I have to say so.' The woman thought while being slightly suprised by the sight in front of her. A boy with short blue hair and tail and clear green eyes. That is a very rare combination since very few families would have this kind of apperance. The only familes which, the woman knew that, had this kinds of characteristics were the Arch-Priestess' family and the Longinus dukedom. She could easily guess that he was probably an illegitimate child that was roaming through the streets, thanks to the armor. But the sea serpent gave her an off kind of feeling, like things weren't as obvious as they should be, since she had the green eyes, as well as the white marks on her. 'The kid is probably part of the Longinous dukedom, maybe a child born from a servant or a child he wants to protect. The Arch-Priestess' family would definitely not let him to roam the streets like that, considering the woman who gave birth to them, she wouldn't want them to be out of her sight, not even for a minute. But nothing is concrete. The serpent as well is definitely a mystery, since there is no serpent that i know of that has white marks. Well, there is no point in asking in front of so many eyes.' The woman thought for a while.

After that, she continues on her own previous thought for a bit, when suddenly, a blue light came off from Soren's hand. She was a bit suprised that he knew magic, considering the fact that he had an extremely high chance of being illegitimate, so she doubts anyone would have taught him anything, especially other magicians, those guys kept their spells close to their hands, so no sane man would teach him, lest they wanted to be persecuted.

'This kid definitely knows how to pour mana and he does that pretty well. This will definitely pull a lot of attention.' The woman thought with a slightly sour expression.

'Let's hope this is the most he can do, because if he can do more, this will-' The woman was thinking when she suddenly saw him cover his hand fully with mana. This definitely showed that the kid had skills and he wasn't like the other normal mages.

'Dammit, why did this kid have to show this kind of skills in this kind of place, I have to make him stop before the people from the other seats notice him.' She thought, before poking him and said:

"I know it's important to practise your magic and all, but please don't do that during a formal event. It is pretty distracting for all of us."

"I am sorry for annoying you." Soren said while feeling embarassed.

"It's alright as long as you have learned your lesson." The woman answered back before throwing a small sigh of relief.

'That was close. If he tried anything else in front of them, it would be extremely hard to stop them from trying to get the kid under their wing. This is definitely a valuable kid, he has a lot of potential. If he gets an opportunity to learn some decent magic, he should be able to reach great heights. I have to get contact info from this kid, that way, it should be easy to enroll him as a scholarship student and teach him under my wing.' The woman thought to herself for a while.

...

Soren felt like he was going to die from boredom, since he had litterally nothing to do. 'When will the summoning start? I just it to be over and go back to the mission.' Soren thought with an angry expression on his face. While he was feeling annoyed, he saw at the bottom a few priests holding staves, scepters, tridents and even books. All of them were coated in gold or something that looked like gold and then they stood in a circle. Intotal, the priests were counted up to twelve, with the order of the items held were staff, scepter, trident and book, on a counter-clockwise way.

After the twelve priests made the circle, they started chanting some weird words and syllables while the ones with the staves, scepters and tridents were hitting the ground with them every third syllable. After a little bit, a woman with pure azure clothing and a veil came and started dancing inside the circle. The woman also had completely long blue hair, crystal green eyes and a tail, full of sharp blue scales.

While the woman was dancing, everyone else were absorbed by the dance. Soren and Lavenza weren't absorbed as much though. Soren himself felt that the woman was a bit familiar but also felt that something was completely off. Lavenza was feeling nervous though and decided to hide behind Soren. As the ritual went on, the feeling of uneasiness became stronger and stronger for Soren and Lavenza. Then suddenly, the both of them had a horrible headache that was as if someone was injecting solution that caused pure pain in his head. The headache became stronger and stronger for the two of them, then Lavenza suddenly fainted on top of his lap and he soon followed after when his vision was met with a bright light.

After the light came, Soren didn't feel like he had that nasty headache. But the next moment completely shocked him. What he saw in front of him, was his house from the previous world and in front of the door, was Lavenza completely unconsious.

"Lavenza!" At that moment, Soren tried to swim, but instead he fell on the ground as he saw that he didn't have his tail, but rather his legs.

"My legs? But...? Not now. Lavenza!" After Soren said that, he started running as fast as he could to the door and picked up Lavenza to check on her. Thankfully, she was just asleep, so he tried to wake her up.

"Hey, Lavenza wake up." Soren said while poking her on her cheek. Then Lavenza woke up and the moment she saw Soren, she started crying.

"Kyuuuuuuuaaaaaaa~!"

"Don't worry Lavenza, I'm here now. Please, don't worry, I'm here right now." Soren tried to calm her down. After a little bit of time, she stopped crying and then looked at Soren while having a slightly afraid expression.

"Kyuu~ Kyuu~?" She looked like she was going to cry again. Soren understood what she asked: "What is this scary place?"

After looking around a bit better, he noticed that aside from his house in front of him, the rest of the world was non-existant. This feeling was very familiar with the time when he was floating in the space between worlds.

"I am not sure. As far as I know, the area we are in might be the space between the worlds, but I am not sure. The building itself though is a complete mystery." Soren answered back. In reality he knew the truth of the building, but he decided not saying anything about it, since he didn't her to bear the weight of this knowlegde.

"There is nothing out there, so for now, let's just investigate this house." Soren then continued.

"Kyuu~..." Lavenza still felt uneasy but she agreed to that. She couldn't swim as well, since the place didn't have water, so she decided to stay on Soren's shoulder.

"Alright, let's go." Soren said a bit nervously, before opening the door and entering the house.
