I had been planning this trip for months. I had to get time off from work and make sure Isaiah turned in all of his work, so there shouldn't be any reason for us to come home so soon. I am so excited for this hiking trip with my son. We haven't had a good mother son bonding time in a long while. Lately I've been feeling a little distant from him. But hopefully this helps is bond more. My son Isaiah is 10 years old, but has the mind of a teenager. He thinks spending time with me is lame. He would much rather spend time on his video games and text with his friends. Well not today. Today is all about nature and us.
"Isaiah!! Hurry up you don't want to get stuck in traffic." I yell at him while I'm packing our lunch for a picnic. I'm making sandwiches, turkey for me and black forest ham for him. I also pack some salad and veggies. But of course he wont eat that so I pack some chips for him. Now that all of that is packed I need to load it in the car.
"I'm coming already geez. But really what traffic are wee going to hit? Everything is literally 5 seconds away mother." He yells back at me, and I hear his footsteps coming down the stairs. Then he says "Ugh! Do I have to go? I really don't want to go."
"Don't you want to get out of town for a bit? I mean aren't you a bit tired of this small town? We are going somewhere else where everything isn't the same or so close. It will be a change of scenery. Look we made a plan together and we are sticking to it. I promise that tomorrow when we get back you can play all the video games you want, just please today for me, make an effort to enjoy it?" I ask him in my most sincere voice. He just nods his head. I then take one quick look at what he is wearing, he has on a black t-shirt, with khaki cargo shorts on, with his hiking boots on. My son is a pretty tall kid for his age and he's white complicated kid. He has a cap on and he has it on backward, and has his sunglasses on.
"Does this look ok?" he asks while modeling his clothes for me.
"Yes that looks good. Now what about me?" I ask modeling my clothes for him. I'm wearing capri pants with my hiking boots and I'm wearing a black v- neck t-shirt and my long black hair is up in a pony tail.
He gives me two thumbs up and then says, "You look good mom can we go now?"
I chuckle and say, "Yes lets go." We make our way out to the car. I take a mental last minute sweep of the house and then lock it then we are on our way.
"I have to pick up some last minute stuff and then we will hit the road. Do you want anything in particular or need anything from the store while I'm there? I'm not stopping anywhere else. "
"No mom, I'm good." he says while he puts on his earbuds.
I roll my eyes and laugh. "Alrighty then."
I literally drive up about 1 minute away from the house, to our in town grocery store. I had forgotten to get some gatorades, and some waters.
"Good morning Mrs. Flores. How are you this morning?" I say as I make my way into the store.
"Vanessa dear good morning! I am doing great, I mean I woke up this morning, right?" She laughs. Mrs. Flores is the oldest lady in town. She owns our version of a Walmart, and she is just the sweetest lady ever.
"Yes ma'am that's the best thing that can happen to us right?" I say back with a smile on my face.
"Amen to that. How's little Isaiah doing? Is he excited for the hiking trip?"
"Ha." I chuckle softly. "Not really. Hopefully when we get there the site will change his mind. The brochure that I saw was so beautiful. Where we will be, we will be able to see the sunset. I just hope it will be enough to impress this child of mine."
"Oh my. That does sound beautiful. Don't you worry your pretty head about that. I'm sure once Isaiah sees how beautiful it is, I'm sure he is going to love it. Alright, now is this all you need Vanessa?"
"Yes ma'am. Just 4 gatorades and 4 waters."
"Alright then your total is 7 dollars."
"Here you go." I hand her a ten dollar bill. "Keep the three extra dollars Mrs. Flores. Have a good one. We will see you tomorrow. Wish me luck."
"Good luck dear. I'm sure you and Isaiah will have an amazing time, be safe and wear plenty of bug spray."
"Will do ma'am." I say as I'm walking out with the bag in my hand and putting my wallet away in my purse. When all of a sudden I feel the ground begin to shake. Weird. There has never been an earthquake here in this part of town ever. I'm trying to run to the car to get to Isaiah. I'm fumbling through my purse trying to find my keys when I remember that Isaiah is in the car with the car on. Then I look up and that's when I see the scariest, and most massive thing I have ever seen in my life.
There is a wave about 20 feet tall coming straight for us.
I am banging on the car door trying to get Isaiah's attention. When he finally notices that I'm banging on the door, he yells "What the heck mom you almost scared me to death." He opens his door and that's when I yell "ISAIAH GET OUT AND RUN!!!!!!!"
