Chapter 2 - Nativus Lupi and the Void

"Grrrrrr..."

They were large looking creatures, baring their sharp jaws at us. These don't look like E-rank Diversos.

I looked over at the examiner. He was giving off a grim smile. Is this guy doing it on purpose? Why the hell did he choose the most dangerous E-rank monsters?

"Diversos will not play easy on you. They'll see you as food and possibly a human fur coat. If you want to survive, you'll have to fight fire-"

He made a blue fireball in his left hand.

"-with fire."

Then another blue fireball in his right hand. Then he smacked his hands together, and they dispersed.

So this guy is one of those sadistic kinds. I don't like his attitude, and I hope I don't meet him when I enroll in the Magic Force. That is, if I can survive this.

Everyone was being jumped by the Diversos. These Diversos were a lot like wolves. They have these metal poles on their back that generate electricity. There are different varieties of these wolves, but the ones with metal poles on their backs are common. We call them Nativus Lupi. Lupi(s) for short.

The only proper way to defeat these ones with metal poles is the use of water magic. Sadly, I don't have the aptitude to use elemental magic. Heck, I can't even use any except shooting magic generated beams from my weapon.

I aimed at one of the Diversos and fired my weapon.

Bam!

Bam!

I shot the Diverso twice, and it yelped. Then it turned its attention towards me and snarled.

"Oh, crap."

Maybe I should've put more power into my shots. The Diverso approached me slowly while baring its teeth. I gulped and tried firing another shot but my weapon suddenly got jammed.

"Huh? What is it this time?"

On the side, a holographic note appeared.

[Cell Battery: 0%]

Ahh crap, I forgot to charge this thing. Where is Elaine, I need her lightning magic.

Elaine was busy fighting against two of the Lupis. Her moves were so precise. She jabbed every one of the Lupis in their pressure point, the spot right between their necks. I've never seen her move like this. She used to always be a hardcore, long-ranged magician. Firing powerful spells from far away. I know she went overseas to go training for two weeks. But wait, how can she do that in merely two weeks?

Nevermind that, I have some problems of my own. The Lupi ran up to me with its jaw opened. I quickly jumped to the side, the Lupi flew past me.

Slit!

"Tch!"

The Lupi swung its claws right as soon as I jumped away, leaving a tiny cut on my right cheek. I fell on my back and the Lupi landed on its four paws. It quickly turned around and attempted another tackle.

"Elaine, help!"

"Graaaa!"

Slash!

The wolf was cut in between its neck and it dispersed into electric particles. Most Diversos when they die won't leave behind a carcass. Lupis are one of those Diversos.

I looked upwards and Elaine was standing there smiling.

"C'mon, it's no time to laze around."

She gave me her hand, and I took it.

"Thanks, Elaine."

"Hehe, keep up Tatsuo."

"I'll try, but I can't promise anything."

The instructor smiled and whistled, then more Lupis came. I looked at the time and only three minutes had passed. Just seven more minutes.

The next wave of Lupis were fire types. They have these thrusters like poles on their backs that blast out flames. They also have these metal armor like things on their stomachs. Beware to not get near their backs or touch their stomachs, or you'll get a high degree burn.

Bmmmm!!!

I looked over at Elaine, who was charging up a water spell. A blue glowing magic circle in front of her. When one of them ran towards Elaine, a stream of freezing cold water came out of the circle and the flames on the Lupi died down. Then it fell onto the ground and dispersed into ashes.

"Nice."

I'd compliment her.

"Thank you."

She gave a smile but it quickly faded. The second wave of Lupis began their attack. Elaine quickly shocked my weapon, charging it back up to a hundred percent.

A Lupi jumped into the air behind her. I told her to watch out, but she didn't even need the warning. She twirled around and slashed the Lupi's neck, causing it to become ashes.

I'm impressed with how quickly she can react. Maybe she's using some kind of animus. There are many kinds of animal spirits she could be using, specifically one with the fastest reaction time.

I guess I'm going to have to be the long-ranged one here. I aimed my weapon at every Lupi that targeted us. Good thing Elaine is good at close combat, I'm not fit to do close range fights since I just don't have the strength to muster.

Bam-Bam-Bam!

I shot a Lupi three times, but for some reason, it wasn't down. The Lupi glared at me and snarled at me, drool dripping from its mouth.

Guess it's time to use my plan.

I'd start running away and didn't even try to look back. There were people fighting Lupis in front of me and I managed to get past all of them. To be honest, I think I'm the weakest one here. Rushing past them, I could sense that they have a higher magic level than me. I was born with that instinct. The instinct to feel someone's energy level. You could say it was my sixth sense. Since I've been near Elaine almost my whole life, I've gotten used to her overwhelming energy level. I can lower my senses if I wanted to, but currently, I have it dialed up to a hundred percent. If I lower it, I won't be able to notice if I'm being chased or not.

Bam-Bam-Bam!

I fired my weapon over my shoulder, magic bullets hitting Lupi's face, back, and leg. Damn it, why won't it just lift its head so I can shoot it in the neck?

I'd stop in my tracks and fire at the Lupi again. But all my magic bullets did were irritating it. I'd try to fire once more, but nothing came out at the end.

"Huh? What the, I just had it charged."

I would then realize that I had run out of magic power. That's right. Since my energy level is only at a hundred, the most I can fire is almost 20 shots.

"Roof!"

The Lupi barked and tackled me onto the ground. I'd hit the soft grass and tried to get up. But the Lupi snapped its jaw at me and I jerked my head back, hitting the ground again.

Yeah mom I don't think I'll be getting home unharmed today. Maybe a few bites on my arms, some scratches on my face, or even a have one of my fingers bitten off.

The Lupi snapped its jaw at me and attempted to scratch me. I managed to block a few, but I got scratch marks that cut through my coat.

Shit, I need to accumulate some of my magic back so I can kill this thing. Its neck is right in front of me, I literally have a clear shot. But my weapon is three feet away to my right, and I need to breathe correctly in order to accumulate some magic.

"Snarl!"

Drool dripped from its mouth and onto my face. Aww jeez, disgusting. The feeling of drool on your face is just... it doesn't feel right.

I'd try pushing the Lupi off me, but I sometimes forget how hot fire type Lupi's are. Cause I probably got a high-degree burn from touching the metal plating on its stomach.

Sizzle!

"Aaargh!"

It burns like I just touched hot lava. I don't use fire magic so I don't have the slightest resistance to fire. To be honest, I don't have any resistance to any magic. I can't even perform a simple air spell. The Lupi seized its chance and aimed for my neck, but I used my forearms to keep it from ripping my throat out.

I'd start losing my strength, I can't keep this up forever you know. You can't push something with burnt hands and everything is getting heavier. My breathing was ragged. And that's not a good thing for magicians. You need to be able to breathe correctly or not only will you not accumulate any magic, you'll consume more stamina as well.

"Elaine!"

I called her out but she was busy dealing with countless Lupis. She would look at me from time to time and try to come after me, but she would always get intercepted by more Lupis. It was useless, she won't make it. If she did, I would've gotten majorly injured.

I... I don't think I can do it anymore, I'm going to let go...

But just when I completely lost my strength, a bright light flashed on the roof. This light wasn't the stadium lights. Is that... a void?

"What the?"

The instructor said as he looked up at the roof. The light flashed brighter and brighter. Then an enormous sound which should've ripped my eardrums out destroyed the roof.

CRANK!!!

Znnnn!

There it was. A small void. With blue and white edges that have black mist pouring out. It was like an abyss.

A figure stepped out of the portal. It was Diverso that I've never seen before. It looked like a large lizard, with large claws and a muscular human-like build. Its skin was all gold and looked like it had blue/white streaks all over its body. Not only that, the thing had wings!

That's when the weight on me disappeared. The Lupi had vanished. I looked around and searched for where it was and the Lupis had piled beneath the void, like they were attracted to the other Diverso. When the Diverso noticed the pack of Lupis, it slowly began to lower onto the ground. Then the Lupis suddenly burst into ashes.

D-did it just kill its own kind? I was not the only one surprised about this, everyone had a horrified expression on their face. There would be two reasons why they were shocked. One, why did a void suddenly open up in the stadium, or two, the Diverso kill the Lupis. For me, it was both.

"This is going to be a problem. All of you, run for the entrance, I'll take care of this creature."

The examiner said and everyone ran for the exit. Elaine ran towards me and took hold of my arm.

"What are you doing? Let's go!"

"S-sorry."

We ran towards the exit but I guess the people outside forgot to count how many people had entered and how many had come out because the exit was locked.

"Shit, we're gonna have to find another way out."

"Agreed."

But as we returned to the field, the battle had suddenly begun.

BOOM!
