Chapter 13 - Thirteenth entry

This winter I celebrated my 12th birthday. Now normally I wouldn't care about something as meaningless as this, but considering everything that has happened so far it's worth to mention. I expected my life to be pretty boring being stuck in a town surrounded by eternal white, at least until I grow up. I expected this diary to simply be me complaining about it when I couldn't turn to anyone for help.

But in truth, I have not expected any of the stuff I have written so far to happen. Simply put there was nothing to indicate the life-changing events we would experience. I just wish it didn't came at the cost of our parents' lives. I am sure they would have loved to see us grow. Well, as long as they don't know about my certain decisions. At least I finally have a major clue to pursue in my search now. I have not expected it to be a person rather a book or an artefact.

Let me start at the beginning. Around my birthday Cass left the city due to official business. According to the news from the expedition Prince has landed on another island with a Tigran town there. Apparently this town was founded by outcasts of our allies so there is animosity between them. Realizing that leaving them alone would lead to war between our allies he made an executive decision and annexed the city and put it under direct control of Metzaca.

In order to help with the process of annexation he sent a request for civil servants from Metzaca to take over the Town Hall for now.  Even before this came out to the general public Cass left with some people towards that town. Guessing she smelled some potential profit by going there early. Anyway it left Linne in charge of the company. Of course it isn't official yet since she is still underaged, but she is basically at this point her second-in-command.

In the meantime, we have received brand new technology in form of robots to experiment with. First UAVs, now robots. Okay, they are called golems by the artificers which the mages hate since they have their own magical ones. But still, is Arcadion also like me? Is he an engineer that either he remembers his life or at least is influenced by it? Considering what else I have encountered recently this is a real possibility.

Anyway on the last day of the golem test with our company the new scribe from the continent came looking for me. I was a bit surprised that he of all people came to the warehouse. It didn't help that the reason for this was because he wanted to show me several stories for no real reason. I was confused and started to worry at which he admitted that he was crossing the line. If he had made a mistake, he would have gladly paid for it. I was still worried, but with my sister on my side and him not knowing anything about my powers I let this slide and now I am glad I did. You see he gave something among those stories I thought was impossible.

A short history of the Eastern Commonwealth, a predecessor state of the one from my previous life. Even if he was pulling my leg, he could never had learned details such as the origins of the nation being Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the king August II was dethroned, Scouring of Scotland, destruction of both Warsaw and London by nuclear bombs and even horrifying fighting around Istanbul in the last days of Earth. My hands still tremble at the sight of that page. Information that shouldn't even exist were now in front of me.

He sadly had more of this that he promised to give me in exchange for the design of the golems I had in mind. He caught me and my sister discussing about them. You see my mom was an engineer so she taught me some simple designs in hopes of following her footsteps. While this did serve me greatly in the early days of my career, I never thought I would use it in this life too. Shame I didn't learn more since it took me several sleepless nights just to finish the design. I don't think I will pursue this career. It's just too much for me. At least I did finish it and presented it anonymously to the Artificer's Guild. That's out of my hands now.

We met again in a quiet corner in the Archivists Guild's library. It was easy to find a place for ourselves since by now I know the place like the back of my hand. I could finally start a talk with a person who is in the same situation as me. I only knew basic information about his current life. 51 year old goblin by the name of Rigurd Blackwood. Born in the Goblin Republics he is now a senior scribe that is assigned to Guild's branch in Metzaca. I wanted to learn more, but I was too focused on the design so I didn't have time.

Of course the first thing I asked him was how he found out about me and who he was before. For the first question he answered that some of the small talk on our first meeting were possible hints so he wanted to see if it was true. Now thinking about it I shouldn't have made that joke about the mushroom cloud. As for my second question he initially refused to answer. Those who kept their memories from their previous lives and revealed that to the world didn't have a happy future.

According to the known history bad fortune came to any being regardless of race and gender after they revealed the truth about themselves. They were either persecuted, believed to be insane or abused their position and ended up dead. The only good thing was that after some time the Star Cult was created on the belief that our souls are on the eternal journey across the stars and it became the dominant religion. Anyway he also said they were 4 more people like us in the guild. From what he could gather we all belonged to different races and nations so there is no point in trying to pry too much. Otherwise we might dig up past grudges that have no reason to exist anymore so unless you are willing to talk about it they stop the conversation immediately.

I actually had some luck on this front as it happens. You see, that joke about the mushroom turned out to be of poor taste since he revealed that his race destroyed itself in a nuclear war. The thing is there was only one race in my previous life that did this. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was speaking to a „live" member of the extinct Valintu race. I still remember when we discovered their dead planet. We had such high hopes for it. When he realized he was found out, he properly introduced himself as General Gerhardt Folirin with a proper military salute. It was only fair for me to do the same.

So what was supposed to be a very tense conversation turned into a nice conversation between two officers. We shared so much about ourselves. From my battlefield experiences and the eventual fate of the Valintu to his descriptions of life on Valin Prime back when it was full of life. It feels nice being able to actually talk about this with someone else. Also fun fact, I am technically older than him. He was 42 when he died. I was 107 when I died. You couldn't think this was true just by judging our current forms. Anyway I finally have something I can search for in the future. I hope I won't end up regretting it.
