Chapter 16 - Sixteenth entry

I found for myself another mystery I want to know the truth about. Well, in this case the mystery found me. As it turns out my paranoia about birds following me everywhere turned out to be true.  The damn bird followed me into Guild's library, something kinda hard for your average bird since due to smog from city factories you can't open windows anymore for fresh air. It interrupted me while I was talking to Rigurd. After Rigurd left for a moment I confronted him wondering what the deal was with this bird. It was clearly intelligent enough to follow me around.

I hoped that with some persuasion it could show me where it came from. I didn't expect it to actually talk. I guess it didn't really want to get compressed into a meat ball. It wanted to find a place more private so that we could talk. I was not sure about this, but the surprise he had in store for me was more than enough to convince me. I don't what exactly it gave me, a marble or a pearl or some kind, and I managed to accidentally break it, but I guess I held it long enough for it to give me the biggest shock I had in this life so far. I was so shocked when I saw it's surprise, I wasn't paying the attention so I tripped and fell knocking along the books off the table.

This did attract the attention of the librarian so I couldn't marvel in the impossible sight in front of me. I thought the only way to see my former self was in my dreams and memories. I never thought there was a way to make myself to appear in reality in any way. And yet, the impossible happened. It somehow managed to transform into a perfect copy of my old self. I just had to know how. In the end it followed me back home where I knew no one would disturb us.

I wish I could say the meeting ended with all my questions answered. Sadly karma paid me back on that. It refused to give much information about itself like its true name or form. Thankfully it did tell me why he was here. As it turns out it was a familiar in a search for a new master. I think it overheard about me from Cass since it said he came from Sidyu where she was until recently. It thinks I could work well as it's new master. While I admit I am worried about the missing information about it, I do have to remember I too am unwilling to reveal anything about my old self so it's only fair. We simply lack the trust to tell everything to anyone we don't know very well.

In the end I did accept his request. I don't know what exactly I can do with it, but it is clear it has a lot of knowledge about this area. For instance he mentioned something about Nynevians, if that's how you spell it, that are connected to the mysterious horses that appeared in Sidyu. So I might have a new source of information about the Indecisive Archipelago from an unlikely source.

As for their name, it decided to let me name them since, according to it, the master usually gave the familiar a name as a sign of the contract. Apparently it's he so he asked me to name him like I would name my son. Sadly I only had daughters and a sister so I didn't have any good names on the top of my head. I chose Merlin as his name since I wasn't exactly interested in fantasy when I grew up and this was simply the best I have came up with. Now we shall see what happens. Oh, also about that marble thing. It was meant to be used as a way to telepathically communicate between him and the master so I guess we will have to find private spots to talk between ourselves. Judging from the fact he transformed into me I have to guess that he uses illusion magic which is quite rare.

One last news I have for now. The abandoned city of Byrnoth was fully annexed into the colony. The council just announced the new mayor that will take over under the new government. I didn't expect they would decide Cass to become the new mayor. To be honest I didn't know she was doing so well in Sidyu to receive this promotion. My sister did point out that it was also because she was in charge of a major colonial trade company so she could get financial investments faster from her and other colonial companies. You can clearly see she is growing in her role really well and that I don't have merchant mindset. I do hope they can bring the city back to its former self and if they can discover what happened to the elves that used to live there.
