Chapter 9 - Ninth entry

City has been in a buzz lately. Prince has finally returned from his prolonged expedition so now everyone's eyes are pointed towards him and the army. With the spoils and rewards from Crimson Company he brought back as well as the stories of the expedition that his men tell they have become the biggest story of the city for weeks now. At this point almost every threat on this island has been cleared out so, now that they are finally back in the city, they can share the stories about all kinds of monsters that plagued the land.

Thanks to all the new arrivals from the continent who want to hear these stories, the men have been getting free rounds in taverns. I guess the people weren't all that concerned with Prince breaking the law since that topic quickly disappeared in conversations. Probably for the best, if I am honest. The fact that the colonial council had seemingly forgiven him for this transgression means that the rewards were great enough. To be honest I would have forgiven him too if I were in their position. Probably because I served too.

That new engineer, or artificer as people call them in this world, has been making some major changes across the city. With his mechanical expertise and necromancer's undead the city is experiencing a major economic boom. New colonists have been arriving every week in seek of fortune and, since soon there will be no more threats on the island, they are actually leaving the city and settling the land, creating new villages in process.

Of course not everything has been great. As expected the growth of industry has brought along the heavy pollution. Already now the bay has been turned from blue to brown from the excess sewage and on some days it can be hard to breath from that smoke. Thankfully my brother has been earning his keep as a herbalist's apprentice. There have been some talks about a new hospital, but until then apothecaries will need every herbalist they can hire.

However he usually returns home late at night recently. I was bit confused on why since he isn't that much older than me so I confronted him last week. He admitted that this was because of me. He felt left out after Linne told him about the events of the necromancer workshop. I told him that it was for his safety due to what happened last time when he caught me using my abilities. I guess we really needed to have that talk and thankfully it did improve our relationship.

I even found out that I kinda mislead Cass and Linne by accident. They think that somehow I came from the past rather than another world. I guess due to existence of ghosts they made that mistake. I wouldn't blame them for this since apparently ghosts only exist in this archipelago and nowhere else so there might be something unique here that caused my reincarnation. At this point who knows? Nothing I have had the chance to read upon gave me any clues.

At least one mystery will be cleared up. I wrote earlier that almost every threat has been cleared up. Anything that the initial sweep of the colonial army missed, was cleared up by the small group of soldiers under the command of Mr Storm. Now only one holdout remains. There is an ancient city west of Metzaca that is occupied by a group of nagas. The army was too weak and inexperienced to deal with them last time.

Now, with the addition of drones, yes, actual UAVs in the goddamned fantasy world, the army is ready to clear them out. The preparations are currently in progress. Cass has already joined the preparations for it. Right now I am also trying to join it as a helper. This lost city might be the oldest thing on the entire island. If I can find any clues about me there, that would be amazing. If not, then at least we will learn more about the ancient history. I just have to suffer through miserable weather since it's close to the extremely warm part of the island. Lucky me.

We might also get some more help on historical department. They are talks of creation of Archivists Guild branch here in Metzaca. Apparently this is an organization focused on preserving the past. I might see some great progress in my search very soon. We shall see.
