Chapter 5 - A Past Memory

"Give me your hand, Aster," his mother said, holding her hand out from the wooden hospital bed, a large glass pane window opened the room to the outside's light.

"Okay," he hesitantly agreed, setting his right hand onto hers. From the nearby table, his mother's weak hands grabbed a blue blade.

"This is my Midnight Weapon," she told, "I've used it to destroy thousands of demons." She unsheathed it in her lap, leaving the sheath to fall to the ground. "I know I haven't been the most responsible mother, leaving you here on Marylebone alone for long periods of time." She spun the guard, as if it were some kind of lock. "As my child, I wish for you to travel to a place called The Harbor." The hilt suddenly unlinked from the sword, and in it sat a small metal canister. "I'm sure you know of the Midnight Weapons, and their power."

"I do," Aster confirmed, staring quietly at the grey canister.

"I know I don't deserve it," his mother said, "but will you accept my final request?" He still sat silently, still staring at the canister.

He stated, "Of course." A small smile came across his mother's face. He interrupted, "however, mother, I will not be taking your maiden name."

Her eyes widened, "what do you mean, why?"

"I wish to build my own legacy, I'll be stuck in your shadow if I continue your legacy as your successor, I know you are considered legendary at The Harbor," he calmly proclaimed.

"I see." After a second, his mother's head raised once again and she asked, "Even if you build l your own legacy, could you make a promise to me?"

He looked up and agreed, "yes."

"Destroy the leader of the demons," she asked, "you're legacy will exceed mine at that point."

A fire entered his eyes and he said, "I accept, mother!" Smiling with the last of her energy, she pressed a button on the canister and a small needle ejected.

"Aster! No matter what anyone tells you, when you hear the name of the sword in your mind, no matter how small, call upon it and the power that was once mine will be yours!" She pressed the needle into his wrist and Aster felt the thick fluid enter his blood. "This is the last dose of my weapon's Midnight Matter!"

"What? What do you mean, mother?" He called out through the agony of the thick liquid that painfully entered his body.

"You will be the final user of this weapon! No one else after you can possess your weapon to it's full potential!" As the canister emptied into his wrist, Aster blacked out.
