Chereads / The Quest Giver / Chapter 32 - The City Center

Chapter 32 - The City Center

"When do you suppose school starts again?" Jerry asked his friend.

"I haven't the slighest clue." Quast responded.

"Do you think we are gonna start training our abilities there?"

"Not that I have anything to train." Quast replied.

"Ouch." Jerry frowned a little bit. "Yeah, you really don't have an ability for yourself, do you? I mean I've wondered for a long time, do you feel sad that you don't have some kind power like the people that have mana?"

"Yes, yes I do feel sad." Quast answered "But at the same time, I don't. On my shoulders I carry the world's strongest ability,- to turn others into so-called gods, and guess what.."

"What?" Jerry stopped moving along the sidewalk and so did Quast.

A short pause followed "These gods are under my control." This normal statement made Jerry shiver with an otherworldy mix of fear and dread it was almost as if something of unthinkable power was watching over Quast.

The entirety of time stopped for Jerry as he stood still and his friend continued along the sidewalk with his bike to wherever they were headed.

"You know how in anime they turn around by this point and say something like 'Just kidding.'" Quast continued. "Well, first things first I'm not kidding, but don't worry, I won't actually make you or the other users that will join us do anything bad."

"Oh noo, that first part was hella cringe my guy." Jerry regained his composure.

"Ah.. fuck." Quast thought he realised what he said and apologised. "Sorry."

"It's fine, sometimes even I say things that people would find cringe. Anyways, where are we headed to?" They were now exactly in the densest part of the city center. "The mall is closed down, have you heard?"

"Damn really? That's crazy. Wanna go there to see how it looks like?" Quast asked and got an affirmative answer.

Once infront of the main entrance of the mall they took a look beyond the glass of the closed automatic doors.

Everything on the first floor was empty, the shops were closed down with metal shutters guarding them, the shiny red car that costed $50.000 and was on display, the one supposed to have been won in a giveaway a year ago was also gone, everything was vacant.

A weird feeling surfaced to Jerry's mind when he saw dark blue particles of light on the upper floors.

"No way." Jerry nudged his friend and pointed upwards towards the 3rd floor.

Quast noticed the dungeon and looked surprised for a second or two. "There's a dungeon there." "Wonder what'll happen to it after the mall re-opens."

Jerry shrugged. "Probably nothing." "What do we do about the dungeon though, it's like it is daring us to enter the closed mall."

The noises of a car from behind them could be heard, they turned around just as the car parked into a parking spot that was indicated by white paint. Out of the relatively small black car 2 officials also dressed in black exited. One was bald with a beard and the other one had curly hair and sunglasses on his face.

The friends opened the system chat to communicate.

[Woah, are those inspectors?] Quast asked in the chat.

[Wait why would they be here right now, shouldn't they have been here yesterday when the entire thing happened?] Jerry wondered.

[They were probably here yesterday too, it's just not everyday that you see a dude making explosions from literally his own energy, so of course they are going to check up again on where everything happened.] Quast pointed out.

Jerry silenced himself and closed the chat interface.

The men in black pushed past the friends and unlocked the automatic doors, one of the men glared weirdly at Jerry for a split second.

Jerry still couldn't completely hide his overpowering mana so it was expected that at the very least one of the men would notice it.

The people who were dressed in very fancy black suits with a tie and all made their way past, their shiny black shoes reflecting light.

"That kid, the one with the black hoodie, did you feel the energy surrounding him? I bet he'll become a powerful ability user." The bald agent said when they were a bit farther into the mall.

"Oh really? I didn't feel anything from him." The one with the sunglasses said.

"That probably means that you don't have.. what was it called online again? I think it was called mana, so you probably don't have mana." The agent with no hair said and started inspecting the area where the explosions happened.

Jerry and Quast decided to walk away from the scene to go somewhere else.

"This is the best time of the year isn't it, it's almost summer." Quast said as they walked along a little street with shops and planted trees around them, the mountains could be seen when looking up from the city center.

"Yeah, but the question is, where are we headed to?" Jerry asked.

"Let's go buy a hot dog or something and go to the park." Quast answered.

"Oh, there's this dürüm place nearby, wanna go there? I've eaten there only once and it was really good." Jerry suggested.

"Sure, do you have money with you?"

"No." Jerry answered.

"Cool.." Quast paused for a little bit. "How much do they cost?"

"Well, they come in sizes, but I think the smallest one is like 3 dollars."

Quast had two 5 dollar bills in the pockets of his jeans. "Seems like the sustenance is on me."

"Hmm yes, but of course."

After the successful transaction and the buying of the dürüms they went to the park, Quast pushing his bike all the way along.

The park was big and many people were playing with their dogs some distance from where the benches were.

They sat on a bench and Quast parked his bike where he could see it. After finishing their food Jerry began to talk.

"Ayo remember that one show where this dude who is a superhero saves the world by defeating the final villain, but then tragically dies and then reincarnates into the same world some hundreds of years later with his memories, and in this world he is hailed as the biggest hero ever and respected by everyone, but he can't bring anyone to believe him that he is the hero from all that time ago?" Jerry asked.

"Oh yeah, that one anime.. what was it called 'The hero from 400 hundred years ago'? I think." Quast shrugged as he checked something on his phone.

"Yeah and how he tries to convince people with his overwhelming power that he is the hero of legends." Jerry continued "That anime kinda went and turned into hot garbage in the later episodes, well at least it left us with one of the most fire openings."

"Oh yeah, in my top 10 of all time." Quast replied.

"But isn't our situation kinda similar to the protagonist's, I mean we are the reason for changing the world, but no one will ever know."

"Eh, I don't care if no one knows, if it has happened then it has happened, why claim credit for it when you won't get anything special out of it? People won't believe you anyways, so why look crazy?" Quast muttered, but in spite of it all he would've liked to let some people know.

"I mean you are kinda right, I guess.." Jerry answered and then instantly thought about how cool it would be to beat up guys who try to be big shots, but don't know anything. Thankfully there was no one near them to hear the conversation they were having.

After that they decided that it was time for them to make their ways home, the school was the point where they split off, all along the way they were talking about the state of the world and to where mana had spread.

After 30 straight minutes of riding his bike Quast arrived home and the first thing he did after taking his shoes off was washing his hands, and then Quast instantaneously went into his room and onto his PC, where he spent the next hours till 1:21AM in the morning, playing games and doing nothing.

Another day gone.
