Chapter 2 - New Beginnings

"I think that's about it. Welcome to the team." My new boss gives me one last wide grin and a hand shake.

"Thank you so much, Alice. You don't understand how much you've helped me out."

"I'll see you next week on your first day." I leave the wild life rescue clinic with the biggest smile on my face.

I just went to my first job interview ever and it went great. I just got my first job! I've been in Philadelphia for a week now, trying to find a job.

When I called my mom last week crying, we made a deal. She said I could move to Philadelphia with my brother if I could find a job to pay for half of the rent. My mom was pretty busy with traveling all the time. Her job of being a scientist and making new discoveries demands it, so she always tried her best to help me.

So, I signed up for many jobs, but none of them called me for an interview until today. Alice only interviewed me for 10 minutes before giving me the job. She was a really sweet woman.

I start driving home with the last of my boxes that I picked up from the post office. I wasn't really sure about moving before, but I'm happy I did now.

I kept getting notifications on Instagram. Kids from my old school were texting me hateful things like "you and your brother should dig a hole six feet under" or "I can't believe you were so dumb to think someone would like you."

I don't want to even imagine what I would be going through if I were still there. Those kids can be so cruel and after my brother left, they made it their business to make my life a living hell.

I got out of my car, carrying some boxes in my arms. My brother is at work right now so I have to bring them in myself.

While I was walking to my front door, a force hit me on the side of my head, knocking me to the ground along with my boxes of belongings. I landed on my wrist pretty badly. I think I even heard a crack.

"My bad. I didn't see you there," I heard someone say from above me. I looked up to see a boy with his hand out to me. He had broad shoulders, bronze/brown hair, and hazel eyes. I take his hand with my good hand and he helps me up.

"Thank you."

"Next time pay attention to where your going." I was caught off guard with his statement.

"Maybe you should watch where you kick your ball," I tell him, about to make an attempt in picking my boxes up again. I grab one of my boxes with both of my hands, but I drop it when I feel a sharp pain run through my wrist.

"Are you ok," he asks me.

"Nah, I'm great. You didn't just kick your ball into my head, knock me to the ground, and break my wrist," I tell him, sarcasm dripping from my mouth and a huge smile on my face.

"Jeez, I'm sorry. I guess you don't want help bringing in your boxes," he says, walking away.

"You might as well help me. It's your fault after all."

"No, it's not. It's your fault for having all the boxes in your face, but sense I'm such a gentlemen, I'll still help you bring in your boxes." He gives me a smirk and goes to grab the first two boxes. I open the front door for him and he brings in all the boxes.

"So, your Nick's sister,' he asks me, after he's done.

"Yeah, I just moved in. Are you friends with my brother?"

"I'm not close with him. More of like a neighborly friendship." At the sound of that, I let out the breathe I was holding.

Maybe he wasn't that bad after all. Any friend of Nick is automatically bad in my book.

"Thank you for bringing the boxes in for me. I'm sorry if I was being rude before," I tell him. My voice apologetic.

"No, I'm sorry. I was being a jerk. By the way, my name is Max." He brings his hands out in front of him. I shake his hand by mistake with my bad hand and wince.

"Spencer," I tell him my name, trying to ignore my pain.

"Hold on, I'll be right back," he tells me and leaves out the front door. I wait, confused on my front porch. I see him come back out of his house with a first aid kit.

"Oh, you don't have to," I tell him. I wasn't really used to people being this nice to me.

"It's really no problem," he tells me with a smile on his face. His eyes sparkling up at me. I hand him my wrist and he gets to work wrapping it.

"Do you go to Academy Arts High," I ask him. My mom enrolled me into Academy Arts because it was the closest school to the house and Nick's college isn't too far from here. Academy Arts has many different academies like art, criminal justice, culinary, medical, etc. I enrolled for photography because I thought it'd be fun.

"Yeah, I do. Your going there," he asks me, finishing up.

"Yeah."

"Then I guess I'll see you Monday." He lets go of my hand, gives me one last smirk, and heads back home.

"Pssst, Spencer wake up. Spppeeeennncccerrrr."

I felt something tickling my nose and hot breathe in my face.

"Spencer," I heard the voice whisper to me again. I open my eyes to see Nick, my brother, right in my face.

"Back up, Nick. Your breathe is boiling my face." I swat his face away and sit up in my bed.

"Why are you asleep so early?"

"I spent the whole day fixing my room. I'm tired," I whined.

"You wanna get ice-cream with me," he asks with a pouty face.

"That's what you woke me up for? Why didn't you just go by yourself?"

"Ok, ice-cream is just an excuse to getting you to talk to me." He was waiting for me to say something, but I just blankly stared at him.

"Fine, be like that." He stood up and started yanking the covers off of me. He dragged me out of the bed and threw me over his shoulders.

"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, NICK! PUT ME DOWN!" I tried wrestling out of his arms, but he didn't let me go.

"We're going to get ice-cream," he tells me, running down the stairs. He picks up a pair of my shoes by the front door and puts me down once we're outside.

"Your so fucking annoying," I mumble to him, grabbing my shoes from him to put them on. He just laughed at my misery.

As we were walking to the car, the neighbors door opened and a bunch of guys walked out. Before Nick and I could get into the car, one of them called Nick over. Nick told me to walk over with him. I was happy that I was wearing a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie because it was freezing out here. The weather in Florida and the weather in Philadelphia were two very different things.

Max was standing outside with four other guys. They all look like their around the same age. The testosterone levels out here is crazy.

"Hey, Nick. This your new 'girlfriend'," one of the guys asked with air quotes. He looked the oldest out of the whole group, with his dark grayish eyes and black hair. He had this cynical smirk on his face that I just wanted to slap off.

"Ewww gross," Nick and I said at the same time. I think I actually almost threw up.

"No offense, Spencer, but your not my type," Nick said.

"I'm not supposed to be your type. Your not my type. Actually, let me rephrase that. Your no ones type," I told him.

"How dare you? I'm everyone's type."

"There siblings. I can see it now." one of the others said.

"Let me just introduce everyone," Max said.

"This is Daniel." Max pointed to Daniel, the one I described earlier with the cynical smile. He gave me a quick wink and I just rolled my eyes. I'll make sure to stay away from him.

"That's Alexander." Alexander was the one who made the comment about us being siblings. His eyes were a dark green and his hair was dark brown. His height caught me off guard though. He was freakishly tall compared to the others.

"Parker." Parker looked like the youngest out of them with his scrawny body, blonde hair, and brown eyes. He definitely looked the shyest. He just waved at me and I waved back.

"And Chester." Chester was a whole different story. He wasn't really paying attention to the conversation, but under the moonlight I could see his bluish/gray eyes and his curly, black hair. At the sound of his name, he snapped out of his mind and looked at me. He didn't say anything, just stood there. Everything went silent and I was trapped in his eyes.

"We should get going Nick or there gonna close," I tell him. The vibe was starting to get overwhelming with Chester just staring at me.

"Alright, I'll see you guys later." Nick and I walk away to the car. When I get in the car, I take one last look over and Chester and I make eye contact again. I look away before he did and Nick drives off.
