We treaded through mud, dirt, loose branches, and the boiling sun in an attempt to outrun the army but the sound of their footsteps alone shook the ground. I could hear their voices barely in the distance and it wasn't good. They were gaining on us.
So focused was I on hearing their voices that I didn't look to see where I was going and tripped over a tangled root, face planting into a bed of rocks under a steady stream. She picks me up and drags me until I regain to my feet. Just a few scratches and bruises. No blood....for now. We have to keep moving. The day is dwindling down and you don't want to be in Bloom forest at night.
Why did Zion pick me? Out of all the girls he picked me. I'm not even one of him. I want to go home. The voices get louder in my head as Witches voice grows dimmer. I start to hallucinate. No, No, no. Not here. Not now. A colorful ball of light appears from the air and beckons my eyes to follow it. They do unwillingly. Even with my eyes closed it is there. I can't stop it. I open my eyes and Witch looks at me weird not getting it. Her lips are moving but I can't hear what she is saying. The ball starts to form into a person and then stops. The hallucinations are getting worse. They're appearing more. The last thing I remember before my eyes close and I fall lifelessly to the floor is nothing!
"Is she dead?"
Her body doesn't move.
"Over here," A voice yells.
"Come on Half-Breed wake up," I plead.
Nothing!
"I see them!"
My eyes dart to and fro looking for a place to hide. I can hear them getting closer and I jump behind the enclosure of a nearby tree and wait.
"I see her! Wait, is she dead?"
"Nobody touch her."
Zion pushes through the army, races over to half-breed and kneels down.
"Is there a pulse," his brother asks slowly?
He checks.
"Yes, there is one but faintly. Her body is still warm but dropping fast. What happened to her? He says the last more to himself then the others but some catch his words.
"Summer, can you hear me? Say something."
Hands push the two front men aside and a girl walks up to Zion. She stands as close as she can to the bushes and kneels down. I can smell her perfume. I crouch down lower so she can't see me if she happens to turn around.
"What is it doc? Give it to me straight."
"Zion, you know I'm just starting my first year in med school but I have seen this before. Summer suffers from Narcolepsy. She is in a sort of reboot system for her body. Too much cluster is happening in her mind all at once so her body sends a recovery drive/hallucination that your eyes have to click in order to shut fully down before the body can begin repairs. Once your eyes follow your body overheats, shuts down and has to restart. Wipe everything. Your body then enters cool down mode where it tries to return to its factory settings you could say or a system reboot to a time that was not so cluttered. Once it powers down all the apps are deleted and the dash is blank. The body then has to 'redownload' the previous days and apps back onto its system hard-drive."
"How long does that take roughly?"
"In total I would say a few days."
Zion covered his mouth and bowed his head.
"So when my girl wakes up I have to wait a week for her to remember me again or just reintroduce myself to her all over again?"
"I'm sorry. Her body might take a few days to come back to but she should be awake in about a day."
Zion started to cry. Such a man!
"What can I do to help her?"
YOU CAN DIE!
I did my best deepest darkest voice and I saw the whole army shake like helpless sheep to the slaughter. Zion looked around and then at the bushes. He looked closer and knew. They rustled and I jumped out with blue fire spitting out of my hands.
Arrows whizzed past me as I dodged them all and landed. Zion stood.
"You! It was you all along you little evil witch. I oughta slice your head off here and now. You poisoned her with one of your spells didn't you so you could kidnap her and take the baby as your own cause you lost everything dear to you? Now you'll pay.
They all came at me as one and I spent the hour dodging, flipping, kicking, sidestepping, ducking, and thinning the herd. They were strong but they were no match for a witch let alone a witch who was top of her class.
The last man fell and I stood in a pool of blood exhausted and unrecognizable. Zion looked at me then at Summer who lay between us. We locked eyes then he slowly backed up and took off on a run. I almost wanted to kill him then and there and easily could've succeeded but I let him go. I had bigger fish in the sea and he wasn't worth it. I had more pressing matters to deal with at the moment.
The sun was setting which meant the creatures would be out. Humans I can deal with but creatures are a whole other spectrum.
"Wait, what was that?" I tense up.
A shadow zips through the woods and I shoot. It misses and she walks out. My anger spikes and I rapid fire. They all hit the trees around her. What's happening, my eyes are perfect, I never miss. One last time. My hands glow bright blue together as I start to form a plasma ball and it steadily grows as she walks closer.
"Kid, I don't want to do this to you. You have no part in this but if you keep walking I will."
She makes no hesitation in stopping and just keeps walking towards me at a leisurely pace. I fire but instantly my expression changes to shock and surprise as it does nothing to her. I can't believe it. She struggles to catch it and does but not before the force digs her heels into the dirt and sends her sliding backwards. Finally the fire quinces and seeps into her skin. I've never been scared before but I'm now.
