She stares at me and I stare at her. It is just a quick glance but time slows and I know without a shadow of doubt who it is but she doesn't seem to notice. She pushes me hard and I go sailing across the room into the opposite wall and leave a dent behind.
"It can't be!!"
The room goes dark and she roars. Glass breaks and the room shakes.
"The dragon!! The legend my teacher was telling us about. It's real. Growing up we all knew that there was a possibility of a dragon still roaming this earth trapped inside the body of a person but it was just that. Legends!! The only one…...with the….purest of hearts...…..could mark the beast!!!
My eyes dart to Summer and then back at my mom in a haste.
" And the beast brought forth a child to one day take its place ending the fude between breeds and humans permanently.
I nervously touch my hip where my blade is hidden. If I return to class with the beast's head in my lap I will be recognized by the whole school but I will also be losing more than a friend. She lunges and I sidestep.
"Mom, mom, stop! It's me, It's Malina!!"
She seemed not to notice as she kept attacking. My forcefield was not strong enough for her strength and I was starting to cave under her pressure. My hands were going weak and my knees were wobbling. The ounces of strength I had left was motivated by the peaceful Summer laying on her bed. She was MY older sister! I pushed back and the dragon started falling back. Tears filled my eyes as I looked from Summer to my mom and all I could say was one word.
"Why?"
She used all her strength and broke my shield. I skidded backwards, knocking my head against the wall. She turned back into the mom I knew and walked towards me.
"How could you kill her? She's your own daughter," I yelled.
Mom stopped and silence fell on the room. I sobbed and dried my tears.
"And my sister," I spoke more softly."
"I have too."
She turned, looked at Summer, pulled out a surgical knife and walked. I did what any young kid does when they don't want ther parents to leave. I grabbed onto her leg and she dragged me on the floor.
"Mom stop!!"
"Malina, this is bigger than you! Let go now! I won't ask again.
"Not until you give me an answer."
"She stopped once more this time within arms length of Summer but did not look at me.
We're young, your father and I. We didn't know what we're doing. We were dating and just wanted to have fun one night so we drove to this old restaurant that sold drinks, we partied and I went to his place. He said he wanted to do it but I was afraid if I got pregnant then what would happen to the baby. He assured me the baby wasn't going to be like me. I still was nervous but I finally gave in and months later gave birth to Summer. No one saw it but me. When she was born I could see small scales on her back where her wings would one day grow so I gave you dad the strongest drink I could make and he was asleep in minutes. I snuck out the back and dispersed the baby, never to be seen again. When he woke up I sadly told him that the baby had died in the night. I tried my hardest to keep her alive but she stopped breathing so I buried her out back. We sobbed that night and I comforted him and said we can try again. He looked at me and a few months later we did try again and we had you but by the time we had you people were onto us of who I was so we had to go on the run then that happened and your dad and I agreed that it would be safer for you to go and live a better life; so poof. The dragon was no more. Now I know Summer is still alive and being hunted. I don't know why she is being hunted but someone would've had to have found out so I have come to kill her. One dragon in this world was hard enough, I don't want Summer to go through the same life I went through."
She pulls her foot out of my clutches and touches the side of the bed.
"Mom, you can't kill her!"
"Malina, I've had enough. No more arguing with me. This is my decision and mine alone."
"She's pregnant," I yell out.
She pauses for a moment to process it and I think I have her but she goes the opposite way.
'More reason she needs to go. What are the risks if her baby is another one of us. She raises the knife and I have no other choice.
I pull out the blade and drive it into her spine. She yells, roars, and struggles to transform as she drops the knife and falls down.
I did it. I got all my kills and will be promoted but this is not the way I wanted. I grab Summers bed, fall to my knees and start crying into the pool of blood. I close my eyes and collapse next to my mom. My heart stops and my blood is mixed with the dragons and Summers eyes open.
