When Mordred awoke the next day, he noticed that it was very dark. At first, he thought it was just very cloudy but when he looked out the window, he saw that the sky was clear and still dark.
'Why are you getting excited like a child? We are going to go on the hunt. No need to be so impatient.'
After silently chastising himself, he hopped out of bed and made his way to his bathroom. He filled the tub with hot water before stripping down and lowering himself into the huge bath.
As he sat in there, his thoughts were stuck around the ability book he would be getting and his first hunt.
His parents, along with all the other Demon Lords, had promised to each give their child one ability book up to the 6th tier. It was so that the kids could take advantage of their heritage without depending on it fully.
None of the demons were against the children taking advantage of their family background but they did not want to cripple their children by overindulging them.
With how much he had read in books, Mordred had a pretty good idea of the ability he wanted but it came with plenty of risks. He did not want to risk his only chance to get a free 6th tier ability.
'I am making a risky choice in choosing this one. But if it turns out as I hope, then I shall reap a huge reward. If not, I will just be stuck with that useless thing and won't ever use it.
As for the hunt, Mother and Father say that it is tradition to go on my first hunt solo. That means I need to choose from the beginner dungeons. Should I challenge an E rank to get it over with or should I challenge a more difficult one like C or B rank in order to level up faster?'
Mordred sank beneath the water as he let out a frustrated sigh, leaving only his center horn sticking out from the water. In the bath was one of the few times he let his emotions out and did not keep up his poker face.
Mordred burst his head out from within the water and his face seemed more relaxed than it did before. He was currently reading over his skills for the nth time since the night before.
'With my abilities, I can take on a C rank without any major issues. B rank I would struggle with but I would most likely make it out alive. Mid-tier and low-tier are two different challenges after all.
In the end, it all comes down to the ability book I get and how much it works out.'
By the time Mordred climbed out of the bath, the water had already become cold and the sun had risen. He got dressed in a basic set of clothes that would not restrict his movement. This was another condition for the hunt. The parents would not provide armor and would only hand over one weapon that was Tier 2 at most.
Just as he finished getting dressed, El walked in. When she noticed that he was both bathed and dressed, a small, smug smile appeared on her face.
Mordred felt slightly embarrassed by the look she was showing but did not show it. He mumbled out a small "good morning" before making his way out of the room.
The pair made their way to his mother's study where both Kore and Soren were waiting for them. Sitting on her desk, was a grey book with several words written in Latin, the official written language of Hel.
Both his mother and father looked between the book and Mordred with serious looks on their faces. They both knew that the book Mordred showed had the potential to become his best asset or his biggest impede his progress.
"Are you sure you want This ability book?"
Mordred did not answer but instead walked up to the desk and picked up the book. A prompt window appeared in front of him.
[Tier (?) Spell: Summon Familiar has been detected. Do you wish to learn it? Yes or No]
Mordred thought 'yes', before the book shattered into specks of light. He then saw a new prompt appear in front of his eyes.
[
Tier (?) Spell: Tier is determined by rank and potential of familiar
Summon Familiar (LV 1): The user is able to form a contract with and summon familiar. The higher the level of the skill, the less it costs to keep familiar summoned. Warning!: Familiar contracts are permanent. Warning!!!: Familiars take half of the user's EXP whether summoned or not.
]
This was the spell that Mordred was placing most of his hopes on. If he was able to form a contract with a familiar with a large amount of potential, he would have a powerful partner in future battles, even if his initial progress would be slowed down a bit to split his progress with it.
Mordred did not waste any time. He outstretched his hand before saying, "Summon Familiar." A black, glowing magic circle appeared on the back of his hand before appearing in the air in front of him.
'So it will be a darkness element familiar. That's good. It will cover one of the elements I can't use.'
Soon, a fist-sized black orb appeared in front of Mordred and the others. It gave off a cold and evil feeling to those who stood near it. It did not scare anyone who was near it though. 3 were much more powerful than it while Mordred knew it would become his partner.
The orb floated about before 2 green eyes opened and stared at Mordred. It tilted itself as if tilting its head in confusion. A feminine voice was soon heard inside of Mordred's head.
'Are you the one who summoned me?'
"Yes, I am."
'Are you going to form a contract with me?'
"If you allow me."
'Do you know the contract?'
Mordred knew that he had gotten the creature's approval. He also knew that he had to form a contract with it in order to see it's true form. He had to risk it if he wanted the reward.
It was too late to change his mind anyway. If he did not form a contract with the familiar, he would be unable to ever form a contract with another familiar and would also receive a curse as well.
"Yes. I have summoned you from the other side. I wish to form a contract to bind our spirits as one. Lend me your power and I shall lend you mine. As long as I live, you shall be allowed to remain by side. Let us form a pact of Master and Servant. What is thy name?"
'Nyx'
Without any fancy lights and sounds, a link was established between the two. A cracking sound was heard in the air before the orb cracked and broke open. Only to reveal a slightly larger orb with the same green colored eyes.
Mordred's breath was caught in his throat. He saw what his familiar was and was excited. If what he read was true, while his familiar was currently weak compared to himself, its potential would surpass him in the future. He still had to confirm and opened the status for his familiar.
