Chapter 5 - Tale 4: The Knight's Mare.

There once was a knight, bold, honest, and strong. He was the strongest of the land with a sword of pure silver, a heart of gold, and a steed, black as the twilight sky. The steed's name was Nightrider. The duo had started many years before when the Knight had found an abandoned black mare and took her in, raising the mare to adulthood until she was a beautiful, strong steed. the two went on many adventures, slaying monsters that threatened the public, fighting off bandits, or just wandering together for days on end just enjoying each other's presence. but like all good things come to an end so did the duo. One day someone usurped the throne the knight protected and he went without Nightrider to fight the threat, but he never returned. The mare feared the worst and thought disaster had befallen the knight. Nightrider waited for many months where her master had left her but he never returned. After half of a year had passed and passerby's feeding Nightrider as so to keep the mare alive and well she left in search of the knight. Nightrider looked far and wide for her master but to no avail. After many months of searching, she found him, a broken soul with no shred of life left. He lay at the side of the street lifeless, his blade laying there with noticeable cracks in the blade, its once silver sheen gone replaced with the dull reality of it no longer able to be used. Nightrider sat next to her master saddened by the sight of his corpse, she despaired that she had not been able to save him or his mind in the end. As the body of the knight withered away Nightrider did not move from her spot, even as her own body began to wither to nothing she did not move. Hunger pained her, as the cold rain racked against her hide like a multitude of tiny blows to her back. As her last breaths left her a god took pity on the scene that lay before him. He granted the last wish Nightrider had, to save those plagued in the mind. She became a spirit wandering the night protecting all from nightmares and the forces of the night. Soon she became known as, the Night's Mare.
