"Gosh. My heart's beating wild! Are you sure it didn't scratch you?" Stef asked again.
"For the nth time, Stef. It didn't."
Suddenly, a phone was ringing wildly inside the car.
Stef grabbed her phone to check.
"It's Gian."
I scoffed.
"How did that f*cker knew about your new number?"
She shrugged.
"Whatever, I ain't answeri- LOOK OUT!"
A creature jumped out in the middle of the road. It had big muscular limbs, running over him would not be a great idea. I had to do it.
"STEF! HOLD ON TIGHT!"
I stepped on the gas harder, going faster every second.
I waited for the perfect distance and time, and recklessly turned the driving wheel to my left, making us drift and dodging the creature.
I hurriedly spun the wheel back and drove faster as the creature started to chase us.
"I-... I have a gun, Fleur! I can shoot it to distract it!"
"No... No! Now is not the time to waste ammunition! We might even stumble across a horde and if it hears the gunshots, we're doomed!"
We've reached the highway and crossed across an open toll gate.
"It's a mess in here. Don't tell me those creatures already reached this place?"
I murmured.
Stef quickly opened the radio and minimized the volume, I drove slower to listen.
The highway is creepily empty, not a single car was here.
The radio sounded weird tonight, it was unlike the old radio stations that you would hear on every road trips.
"Good evening. All of the radio stations are connected directly in the military. Armies have been sent to every place to evacuate people and protect them from the infected. Please do stay at home and do not attempt to go out."
Stef gave me a look that made me sigh in disbelief.
"A 3-hour drive in the middle of the night, with militaries out there evacuating peop-"
"Fleur, what if the military made their way in Laguna and already evacuated our family?"
I clicked my tongue.
"At least they're safe. But we have to make sure."
I drove faster.
"Fleur..."
"What?"
"Gian won't stop calling..."
"Fine, answer it and say that you're no longer in Pasig!"
Stef answered the call.
"Stef! What the actual f*ck?! Where are you?!"
I snatched the phone from Stef's hand.
"Listen here you cheating d*uchebag.
Stef and I are going back home. You guys are done MONTHS ago! What the hell do you want with Stef after just using her with her money?!"
"W-what?! Who is this?!"
"It's Fleur. Don't remember because of how many chicks you've brought to your house?"
"Listen, I only want to talk to Stef. Give her the phone please."
Stef slowly grabbed the phone.
"Hello."
"Stef. Thank God."
"Woah, change of mood. You were mad a few seconds ago." Stef tucked some of her hair behind her ear.
"I was planning to run away with you and bring you back home, in Brazil..."
Stef scoffed.
"Are you this stupid, Gian? I am not going anywhere with you. Stop contacting me! And Brazil isn't my home! You've got the wrong chick." She ended the call and blocked his phone number.
I started to notice the blinking light in my speedometer.
"Sh*t we're low on gas."
I kept driving until I saw a nearby gas station.
"No one's here too." Stef said.
Both of us hopped out with a weapon on our hands. I started to fill my car with gas and Stef decided to grab more snacks in the store.
"Fleur, the store is closed."
I walked around to look for a way.
I saw a broken window on the other side of the building which leads to the storage room.
"Can you fit in there? I'm almost done filling this up."
Stef nods as she proceeded to go inside.
After filling up the car, Stef opened the front door.
"It smells rotten in here. But there are a lot of stuff." She said, holding her katana like a cane.
I grabbed my car key and jogged my way in.
"Ugh. It smells horrible in here."
I covered my nose, trying not to vomit.
We grabbed as many snacks and important stuff we can and quickly ran back to the car when we heard someone crying. It sounded like a child.
"Why would they leave a child behind?! Come on lets find the kid." Stef lead the way and followed the sound.
"It looks like it's coming from behind these bushes." She said.
"I'm not so sure about this, Stef..."
"Well I ain't leaving a kid behind."
She then sliced the bushes and made herself a path to enter. I stayed close.
"Sh*t. Fleur."
"Yeah?"
"Since when did glowing eye contacts existed?"
"Glowing..?" I peaked through her shoulder and saw a child with glowing eyes and bloody hands, crying.
"We have to go back. We have t-"
The crying stopped.
Stef was frozen.
I looked at the kid again and saw that it was looking at us.
"RUN!"
The both of us ran back towards the car and hurriedly opened the door, but the child was faster, it was laughing so hard it looked like we're playing tag.
It's mouth was wide and blood was dripping from it. Stef grabbed her gun out when the child scratched Stef by the arm.
"F*ck!" Stef shot the child at the head, dead.
I ran towards Stef and grabbed a rubbing alcohol.
"This may be painful but we have no choice. I hope it stops the infection." I poured the alcohol on Stef's wounds, she lets out painful screams and cried.
"I'm sorry Stef... I'm sorry..." I couldn't help but cry. I don't want to lose my bestfriend. I hugged her tight.
"Leave me here... Fleur... I might turn into one of them..." She said, gasping for air.
I shook my head.
"No. I won't leave you." I carried her back inside the car.
"What If I turn into a monster? Like one of them?" Stef asked, crying.
"I'll find a cure." I said, my voice was shaky.
She grabbed her gun and gave it to me.
"Shoot me if you must. Death is the only cure in this madness."
"Don't be so dramatic, Stef. I'll make sure you're going to be okay." I let out a smile to make her feel a little better and started to drive.
