Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 13: the deer

It didn't take long for me to pack the few possessions I had. After everything was packed in some random bag that was lying around, I excitedly entered the living room to help the others pack their stuff.

Whit our combined forces we had everything packed in under fifteen minutes. I was glad to notice that with the deal I made they weren't as suspicious of me anymore. Of course, Gert never let me out of his sight, but nevertheless it was a major improvement.

One everything was packed we finally headed out. I didn't have the chance to go outside at all when Yerald was studding me, so it was amazing to finally be out of the mansion.

"Hey Alex in which direction should we move." I asked barley able to contain my excitement.

Alex who was holding an extremely large yellowish map took a closer look at it. But he was interrupted when he tried answering my question.

"Um… Alex, may I?"

Elisa reached out for the map in the hands of Alex. Once she had it, she turned it around and handed it back.

"Now try again."

Alex was dumbfounded and studied the map like it was an legendary artefact of some sorts.

"I think that you are better at this."

He handed the map back to Elisa. She sook a moment to examine the map. Her bright green eyes ran over the paper multiple times before she finally said.

"it's that way."

She pointed to one of the barely visible paths that were leading down the mountain. The path was poorly maintained, grasses and other plants covered nearly every inch of it. More however it gave the path an ancient look.

Once the direction was clear we headed down the path.

Of course, Yohan could not walk for long distances, so he used the stick of Yerald end we had to take a break every hour. However, we reached the bottom of the mountain before sundown non the less.

We set up a few tents and Alex created a fire. I decided that it would be helpful to bring them some meat so that we always would have some spare food.

"Hey, I'm going to get some meat. I will be back in no time."

Allenya looked over at me.

"Great. Come back soon then we can start making dinner."

With that I headed in the woods. Since I hadn't been out for a while and especially when it was slowly turning dark, I hadn't noticed how much my vision improved. It was amazing to see everything so clearly in the twilight. The last rays of sunlight shone through the orange autumn leaves. It was harder to see the threes in the distance because of a thick layer of mist with a golden colour because of the setting sun.

I could hear little mice running around. Probably fleeing from the blood red monster that was marching around. On other thing that I noticed was the sound of water.

("That should be useful.")

But for now, I decided to focus on bringing some meat to the others.

I stayed still and listened to the sounds around me. I didn't focus on smell since I didn't recognize all the scents of the animals yet, given that I haven't been a demon for that long. I simply didn't have the chance to memorize the cents.

A twitch from the left. It sounded like something big. My gaze immediately shot in that direction. But obviously I didn't see anything. The sound was far away, and the mist was way too thick.

As quietly as I could I sneaked to where the sound came from. The wind was blowing in my direction and the cents of the forest also helped bloom my cent so the creature wouldn't be able to smell me.

Then I saw it. It was a deer. The deer didn't seem to notice me and just minded its business. Then I jumped towards the deer and in one solid move I managed to rip open its throat with my black claws. The warm blood of the deer spilled on my skin which was barely noticeable because it was almost the same colour.

Once the life slipped out of the deer the soul was also released. As usual I watched the colour slowly fade out of the soul, I always thought it was beautiful. When the soul had completely turned white, I could barely resist anymore.

Saliva was nearly dripping from my mouth as I stared at the fresh soul.

I took the soul and ate it. It was even more delicious only for the reason that I had been craving souls for over a weak by now.

When the sweet aftertaste of the soul eventually faded, I once again had one of those moments where I would realise what I had done.

I looked back at how I threatened Gert in making a deal with me. ("did I really mean those things? Or where it just some threats? Even I don't know what I would have done if Gert had attacked me.")

I felt scared. I had no idea what exactly was going on inside my head, why at one moment I could just take a life and consume its soul and at the other moment regret everything.

And so, I sat next to the dear hugging my knees with my tail wrapped around myself while shivering.

I took a few deep breaths with my eyes closed, trying to ban the situation out of my head. Whispering to myself that things will be okay once the people in the stone city helped me.

Eventually I got up. I reached out to the brown fur of the deer and carefully picked it up. I didn't pay attention to my surroundings on my way back, everything was just blank. The colours weren't as vibrant anymore, the sounds weren't as lively anymore and the cents not as clear. But that would just have been my imagination, a silent way to punish myself for what I had done. The only thing I was focusing on was the scent of the group of people.

I entered the makeshift camp and saw the group sitting around the campfire.
