Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17: the snake and the nun

Eventually we wandered further. Far beyond from where we were was the edge of another forest. It was hard to see due to the distance, even for me.

("this sure is going to take another day.")

It didn't take long before a howling wind blew troch the fields. since this cased some sand to fly off into the air. What made it hard to see, because it blew in our eyes.

My hair was also getting in the way. Grey locks of hair kept falling in my eyes. Both Allenya and Elisa had tied their hair in a knot so this wouldn't happen. However, mine was too short for that.

We barely rested when in the fields because there were no trees that prevented us from being seen by travellers a dangerous animal. Even touch the red lands seemed safe there were giant snakes in the same red colour of the fields. Those were silent and deadly hunters who had perfectly adapted to the life in the open fields.

Eventually Yohan's feet couldn't carry him anymore and we had to settle down. The others took the chance to sit as well and drink some water while I was keeping watch.

It was hard to see the ground with all those flowers and the strong wind made it hard to pick up the cents that it blew away. This also made it harder to hear something approaching, due to all the leaves that were rustling in the fierce wind.

But I was still the best candidate to keep watch over this bloodred fields.

Then I heard something besides the members off my croup and the endless rustling leaves. I looked in the direction it came from, but to no avail.

"Gert can you take over. I hear something from that direction."

I hated asking Gert to do something for me, but he was the best out of the others in noticing sings that something was approaching.

"Fine, make it quick demon."

("So, he has figured out that I don't like being called demon.")

I tried hiding it so he wouldn't use it against me, but it was only a matter of time before he would have figured it out. He was great at noticing small things and fitting pieces together. However sometimes his fantasies would cloud and distort his otherwise great insight.

I gave a low grunt before I walked in the direction I heard the sound coming from.

I pushed some flowers to the side that were standing in my line of view.

There was one of the snakes. It was almost seven meters long. Its fiery red scales blended perfectly in the background. The snake was wrapping itself around something. It stopped its action upon noticing me.

Its bluish black tongue flickered out its mouth as it stared in my direction. Then it gave a fierce hiss as hit threw its muscular body at me. I managed to jump away from the giant snake, its furious gaze never letting go of me.

Its red scales gave of a dangerous shine in the Licht or the sun. realising that its first attack didn't work the snake began to reconsider its plan of attack.

I used this hesitation to my advantage, jumping over the snake and grabbing its neck so it couldn't bite me.

Now from behind I clawed open the snake's neck as fast as I could. The snake screeched doing everything in its power to escape the fight it obviously couldn't win. But I didn't let go. After I managed to break through the vermilion armour of scales it was much easier to further wound the snake. After this it didn't take long for me to kill it.

The bright soul was released once the snake let out its final breath. The colours slowly faded leaving a pure white flame like object that I had come to recognise as a soul.

I took the soul and consumed it. It's magnificent favour and energy spread trough my entire being. I stood there enjoining the after taste of the soul. But then the wind laid low for a few seconds. I heard something. The sound was coming from the corpse of the blood red snake.

It was the sound of someone breathing. However, it was weak and shivering.

I walked over and pushed the heavy corps of the snake to the side.

There underneath the corps, still slightly straggled by the waist of the snake was a young woman. She was dressed in a black rope, I couldn't see her hair because of the hood she was wearing.

She was a nun.

I freed her from the corps of the snake, she was passed out due to the strangling of the giant snake.

I tried to lift her up in order to bring her to the others, but I felt a stinging sensation when I tried touching her. My gaze fell upon the multiple religious items she was carrying.

I sighed. ("That will be a problem.")

I decided to just bare the uneasy feeling for now and bring her back to the camp. I held her as carefully as possible. ("It would be unrealistic as she hadn't broken at least one rib. ")

Back in the camp I carefully laid her down on the flowers. The others ruched over to see what I had brought to the place we decided would be a temporary resting place.

"What happened." Allenya spoke. She was the first to come by. Alex looked at her clothing. "is that a nun?"

Elisa didn't say anything but still walked over. Only Gert and Yohan didn't come to look at the person I brought. Yohan just didn't notice what was happening since he was sleeping, and Gert probably couldn't care less and kept standing watch.
