Chereads / Afterlife Guardian Angel / Chapter 6 - Kael

Chapter 6 - Kael

"You're an angel? Not a demon?" I asked reflectively. No matter how you look at him, he doesn't give off the image of an angel. I'd say a demon would fit him better.

Kael raised his head sharply at my words. With a darkened expression, he forced a smile as he replied with grinded teeth, "If I'm a demon, rather than talking peacefully with you, I'd have attacked by now! Rather, why is your reaction the exact same even when I first introduced myself a few days ago?!"

"Well, isn't your image at fault here? You're all black. People don't usually think of an angel when they see a guy in all black. Not to mention your expression. What's with those dead eyes?" I reflectively refuted him.

"I was born this way! Did you really lose your memories?! How come the way you treat me is the exact same? At this rate, we really won't be done until morning!" He snapped back.

Realising that we're getting nowhere, I immediately chided him, "Then can we just drop this already? I don't have all night to spend just to argue with you."

Ignoring him, I proceeded to sit back down in my original spot on the rooftop.

Kael looked at me coldly as he followed after to sit next to me. Muttering to himself as he did so, "If you hadn't use such provoking words, I wouldn't have bothered either. I also don't have all night to spend with you. I got other jobs to do."

"Other jobs? You're not a guardian angel too? Are there different types of angels?" I asked curiously as I ignored his first statement.

He turned to look at me with his dead eyes, "You really don't remember everything? Gosh, this is such a pain."

Kael raised his hand to his forehead, rubbing it. After a few seconds of silence, he turned towards me, "I'm not really good at explaining things but you'll have to make do. Reaching out to other angels at this point to help explaining is pointless. At the moment, I'm the only one you can turn to."

He looked serious as he spoke so I decided to keep my mouth shut. Least I ended up provoking him again. I nodded my head to express my understanding and for him to continue.

Seeing my obedience, Kael looked satisfied as he explained, "First, I'll make clear that there are two categories for angels. 'Pure' ones and 'Impure' ones. Pure Angels are those that were born as angels. They are born from light itself. They do not have any gander and can pretty much look like anything. Different people can perceived them differently."

"Impure Angels are those like you. They were born human and, by some special circumstances, became angels after death. Impure Angels are very few and it's birth usually implied that great changes are happening to the human world. The more Impures born, the more drastic the changes is. And by changes, I meant the bad ones. If it's a good change, then there won't be any Impures being born."

"Eh? Then does that mean that my existence mean it's bad?" I asked reflectively, worried of my influence on the world.

Kael looked at me, as if reading my thoughts, he answered calmly, "I need you to be clear of this. Your existence isn't the cause for the changes. You're more of a victim. That's how all Impures are."

"As for how big the changes in this world will be, I'm not sure. As for now, you're the only Impure that was born this time. I can't say if it'll stay that way for certain though," he continued as he gazed on to the horizon.

"Next, I'll talk about the different types of angels. Is what I'd like to say but as there's too many, it's bothersome. I won't be able to explain everything even by dawn. So let's skip that for now. I'll tell you later."

"For now, I'll just tell you about the Guardian Angel. It's basically just you having to babysit some kid. That's the most simplest way of saying it. Although it's actually not that simple. You have to guard the kid and make sure they grow up until they're of age."

"Of age? What age specifically?" I looked at Kael as I asked him softly.

He looked at me from the corner of his eyes and smirked, "Around 13 or 14. You'll know when the time comes. Follow your instincts as a Guardian Angel. To be honest, I don't know much how a Guardian Angel works. I'm just supposed to supervise you and make sure you don't cause trouble, after all."

I stared at Kael as he spoke, he continued to look ahead into the darkness. Before I knew it, I had subconsciously asked him, "Kael, what type of angel are you? The way you talked about it implied that you're obviously not a Guardian Angel. You're also not a Pure Angel, are you? You said Pures can look like anything depends on the person but earlier you also said you were born with your eyes. That means you're also an Impure, right?"

Kael turned to looked at me with his dead eyes. From it, I couldn't perceive any emotions. Up until now, even though his eyes are dead, I could still tell what sort of emotions he's feeling. He was sort of expressive in a unique way. But now, there's nothing.

Just as I was starting to feel uneasy, Kael closed his eyes. The next moment, he opened them and his usual uniquely expressive dead eyes appeared. He softly smiled as he murmured, "Since you lost your memories, I got a bit careless. You're still as perceptive as ever. Although, I think I now understand why you lost your memory."

"Eh, what did you just-" As I was just trying to ask him to clarify his words, Kael cuts me off first.

"That's right. I'm also an Impure. That's also one of the reason why I was chosen to supervise you. I became an angel a long time ago though. As for what type I am... It's Death," he said casually.

"Death? Like death dead?" I asked him blankly.

"What else? You go blank at the strangest times," Kael rolled his eyes at me, continuing, "I'm the Angel of Death. Simply put, the Soul Reaper. I reap people's souls to bring them back the moment they died."

"I see, now the image fits!" I exclaimed.

"That's your concern?" Kael looked at me helplessly.

"Then, Kael, why do you need to supervise me anyway? I mean, aside from making sure I didn't cause trouble. There's no way this supervision is just for that," I asked.

Kael blinked his eyes, looking at me, he nodded, "You got that right. If it's just that, I wouldn't be bothered to come over to talk to you like this. I'd just observed you from afar."

"It's just that I came over to see the effects. You did just became a Guardian Angel. Even if it's just a probational. I need to ascertain your condition so as to assist your properly," he continued nonchalantly.

Hearing his words, I hurriedly interrupted him, "Uh, wait wait wait wait! What do you mean probational? Ascertain my conditions? Assist?"

Kael shrugged his shoulders, continued on explaining in a nonchalant manner, "Yeah. You did just became a Guardian Angel. The process isn't actually something that happens immediately. You gotta enforce your existence by time and experience. If you're incompatible, you'll be out! Well, for the most part, it'll just come naturally to you as instinct. You don't actually have to worry about it too much. That's why I was sent here instead of another Guardian Angel."

"As for the part about your condition and assist. That should probably be your main concern currently. Basically, once you become an angel, it means forsaking your identity as a human. In short, the 'you', a human, will cease to exist. People you know as a human will eventually forget you, erasing your very existence from their memories. You, too, will eventually become indifferent towards the human memories you retain."

"Well, to what extent your indifference will get varies for each person. Those with strong attachment usually doesn't let go for a very long time. It's more of an inclination. If you truly treasure your human memories, you wouldn't start feeling the indifference until much later. But it's not like this changes you yourself. Even if you become indifferent towards the memories, it doesn't disappear. You would still remember and still be you. I should also add that proof that you've started to become indifferent is when you could no longer recall your human name."

Listening to Kael's explanation, I froze up at his last sentence, "So, the reason I couldn't remember my name is... this? Is this also why I had a memory loss?"

At my question, Kael looked at me and bluntly replied, "Your name? Yeah. That should be it. But not for your memory loss. That one had nothing to do with it. Honestly, your memory loss was an unexpected surprise to me. I really didn't think you'd lose your memories of all things. You sounded so confident before, but right after, you ended up with a memory loss. It's just hilarious."

"Wait, but, you know the reason why it happened, right? Can you tell me?" I excitedly asked as I move closer to Kael.

Kael looked me dead in the eyes. With an unwavering gaze, he said, "It was a necessity."
