Hearing Kael speak in a serious tone, I grew uncomfortable, "You're trying to say that somehow, there's a huge amount of negative feelings gathered there? That's what causing the Naves to appear there?"
Kael nodded his head, "That's one of the possibility. Other than that, it's also possible that something else directed them there. Like a Devil. Usually whenever an abnormality with the Naves happens, it's usually them pulling the strings."
"A Devil...? Are they the ones that controls the Naves?" I asked, remembering my experience during the day when I instinctively thought that the danger that I sensed wasn't coming from the Naves. It was what was controlling them.
Kael looked at me, moving his head with a nod, "Is that what your instincts tell you when you dealt with the Naves earlier? If so, then it means it's really bad."
"Bad? Just... how bad are we talking about?" I asked, sensing something really bad from his words.
"Like, bad bad. Horribly bad," he said, with a flat tone, he continued, "Well... at least it's not to the extent of a hopeless bad. Depending on your performance today, you should be able to handle it... Probably..."
'Not convincing, Kael. AT. ALL.' I silently narrowed my eyes at him. "So, what's really the problem if it's really the work of a Devil?"
"Devils are... how should I say this...? Extremely cunning. They tend to manipulate things in the dark, hardly ever showing themselves. That means finding them is a huge pain in the butt. The only time they will ever show up voluntarily is when they've captured their victims and is going to devour them. Well... You're still in probational, so, to be honest, I doubt you'll stand a chance against a Devil. This is still too early for you."
Hearing his words, I suddenly felt a bit irritated, "Then how can you still say that I'll be able to handle it? Properly explain to me!"
Sensing the irritation in my tone, Kael shifted his gaze away from me as he muttered, "To be exact, I added probably at the end..." before proceeding to give me a reply, "I said, 'depending on your performance today', didn't I? When you dealt with the Naves, you didn't get rid of all of them, just a few that saw or was too close to the little girl, right? If that's the case, then I'd say the probability that the Devil has yet to notice her existence is high. That means it's still safe."
"Little girl... you meant Serafi, right? What would the Devil want with her? Why would she be targeted?" I asked.
"Was that what she was called? Anyway, obviously because she's a Trist, what else? Why else would she need a Guardian Angel for?" He replied blankly before looking at my confused face.
"Right," he added, "The catalyst only provided the basic knowledge for a Guardian Angel. Not the common knowledge of all Angels."
'What can I say...? I'm sorry...?' I apologized inwardly to Kael, feeling rather bad when he bent down and covered his face in his hand, sighing.
Raising his head, Kael started to speak in a monotonous voice, "Trist is a word commonly used to address humans with a high amount of spirituality, or in another word, a strong soul. Due to a child's weak body, their soul is unable to adjust the huge amount of spirituality it possess to not damage the body. This resulted in the soul sealing all of the spiritual power within it."
"Thus, as a side effect of the seal, without the spiritual power to provide protection, the child's body is left completely in a vulnerable state. Without the protection of spirituality provided like the other humans with a normal amount of spirituality, a Trist is often used and hunted down as nourishment for the Devils. That's why a Guardian Angel is needed to protect these children until they come of age and is able to use their spirituality to protect themselves."
"So... in short, it's the classic situation of the drug is too strong and the body is too weak to handle it. But if it doesn't take it, the body is exposed to other equally dangerous risk. So all one can do is pray that the body survives and gets stronger before anything happens?" I asked hesitantly.
"Yeah. That works too." Kael replied, "It's actually a rare case for a human to possess a huge amount of spirituality. In a way, you could say that a Trist is both lucky and unlucky for being born this way. However they perceive it is up to themselves though."
"So.. Ugh... Back to our earlier topic, why would it still be safe if the Devil has yet to discover Serafi's existence?"
Kael answered with a sigh, "Naves are like a massagers to the Devil. They manipulate Naves to look for a Trist and bring back whatever information it found out. Once it found a target, the Devil will then proceed to manipulate other things to lure the target into a trap. When that happens, it will get really hard to detect from what, or who, the danger will come from. That's pretty much the gist of it."
"Since you only killed a few Naves, then it most likely won't alert the Devil. They will just think that some of the Naves got themselves killed by being under the light for too long. It is a common occurrence, after all. Bad news is that since there's so many Naves there, I'm afraid that the Devil must be operating from somewhere in the area. Meaning you have no choice but to deal with it."
"Does that mean I have to fight?" I asked, not really that keen on the idea.
Kael shook his head, denying it flatly, "No. You're still not ready for that kinda thing. If I let you, I'm afraid by the end of the day, I won't even have your soul to return."
"Then...?"
"I'll have you attampt to find a leader amongst the Naves. Usually, the Naves wouldn't have something like a leader but when a Devil manipulates it, they tend to make a few into leaders. A normal Naves would bring any information it found to its leader, then, the leader will pass the information along to the Devil using the thin connection it shared."
"This functions as a way to prevent being tracked down by the Angels. If, by some chance, the Devil sensed that a leader was captured or killed, they will definitely move away to another location, severing any connections they had with the Naves along the way. If that happens then it will be near impossible to catch them. Thus, it's very crucial that you make sure that when you found a leader, it doesn't notice you."
Nodding my head, I asked for confirmation, "So, I just have to find out where a leader is? That's all? Will you be the one to handle it once found?"
Kael looked at me, tilting his head, "Me? No, of course not. There's no way I have the capability to extract information from the leader without alerting the Devil."
"Eh? Why not? What will you do once it's found then?" I asked, confused.
"Obviously, get the help of the White Angels. Dealing with demons and stuff is in their jurisdiction. Why should I be bothered with the duty of other Angels? I'm an Angel of Death. My job is to reap humans' souls not demons. Getting arrogant and doing things you're not meant to do just brings yourself an early death. It's important to remember that," he said.
'White Angel...?' I thought subconsciously.
Perhaps my confusion was shown on my face but before I managed to open my mouth, Kael continued in an exasperated tone, "White Angels are also called the Battle Angels. Like I said, they handle the problems of dealing with Demons. Each type of Angels have their own duty. On a side note, Guardian Angels also have similar abilities like the White Angels. As it would help in their duty in protection. Although when compared, the Guardian Angels are more suited to defence than offence, whilst the White Angels focused fully in offence."
Glancing at me, he spoke again, "That's why I'll be calling them to handle the Devil. However, they will need some time to arrive. And time isn't something we can afford to waste when dealing with a Devil. Thus, we should first confirm the situation and figure out where we could find a Naves's leader. Any other questions?"
Upon receiving his questioning gaze, I warily turned away, "Uhh... Wait, I might need to reorganize my thoughts for a bit."
'Having so many things told suddenly. Honestly, I'm rather confused...'
After a few moments of silence, I turned to look at him, "For now, mind explaining to me what your plan is? If you do even have one?"
Kael looked at me, grinning eerily with his dead eyes, "Well..."
Somehow, I felt like I definitely won't like his plan.
