Chapter 18 - Pity

Kurtis got called out to present the program and Birdie watched him from Backstage. The man was really weird. After he told her that she was younger than he thought, he started talking about how he loved my work and that someday they should hung out to talk business, whatever that meant.

Birdie watched the program go until it was her turn to go on stage.

"Now ladies and gentlemen, we have the woman of the moment, who most people speculate her to put herself on the top of the chain of business. She has made history with her new software security formula, and she's here to tell us all about it. Give it all to Birdie Conde" said Kurtis. Birdie almost laughed at the presentation he gave her but she managed to maintain her serious facade and went on stage.

Everyone on the public applauded, really curious about her. After all, they didn't know anything about her, and she just jumped to the top of the top of the industry. Also, she was so young it was intriguing how smart she was and how did she get all this knowledge.

Birdie sat on the usual couch there is at this type of shows and greeted everyone, "Hello everyone, I'm so glad I can be here today", she really was, even though she was a bit nervous.

"Hello there Birdie, well, this interview is pretty much going to be about you since we all know about your company, after all it's the only thing that there is to watch on TV this days" he joked.

Birdie laughed though she felt even more nervous now that she would have to talk about herself.

"Well ask away and I'll answer to the best of my abilities" she said with a smile, the least she could do was look calm.

"That's wonderful, now let's begin with the first question, to know a person better you have to know how she was raised, so we would like to know how was your childhood" Kurtis said. He tried to research about her but found nothing and he was one of the few people in the world who would be able to do that.

"Well my childhood was amazing, my parents tried to be there for us as much as they could and we were a really close family so I can't complain" she said.

"That's wonderful so you said us ? You were not an only child ?" he asked.

"As a matter of fact I wasn't I'm actually the youngest, I had two older brothers, and we were really close too, they loved me very much even though they were boys and the age gap they still played with me and kept me company" Birdie said, she was getting a bit emotional about this talk, after all it has been a while since she talked to someone about her brothers and there's the other issue too. She didn't want everyone to know about her family history but it seemed like a better option than lying so she would have to cope with the pyty.

Kurtis notice that she was talking in past al the time and asked the most obvious question, "Birdie, I know this may be a bit too forward, but if I'm correct, you're talking about your family in the past, is that for any specific reason ?"

Birdie knew she wouldn't be able to avoid it anymore so she started spilling, "There is, they all passed out in an accident. I dont really want to talk about the specifics of the incident, it just brings too many memories, you know ?" she started, "But seeing as this may come in further questions, it happened three years ago, when I just turned eighteen and I barely knew what to do with myself. So I followed my parents wishes and became as smart as I could, I studied everything there is to study and focused on my education, so it hurt less" she said. She knew that now came the sorrys and the that's so sads...

Kurtis and the whole audience, the ones in the set and all over Europe were stunned. They were amazed at how this little girl had gone through so much and managed to move forward and become the best version of herself. Now everyone was even more interested, and even if they still thought she was too small, they still felt bad for the girl.

Kurtis tried to get out of the shock as soon as possible, and when he did he tried to find the words "I know you've already heard this many times, but i feel the need to tell you how sorry I am about your loss" he was still stunned at how strong this woman was. In his eyes, she was not a little girl anymore. She was a woman that had every right to be here today.

"It's ok, though I would like it if you all could still treat me like a normal person and not a charity casa. This happened years ago and i can grieve on my own, I don't want people's pity, I want them to look and me and see a young independent woman that's building herself a career based on her efforts and not the people's pity, you know what I mean ?

Kurtis then thought that it was impossible to admire someone more than this.

"Yeah I understand, and I'll conduct the interview as for any other person, I promise" he said. Birdie nodded in appreciation and he continued.

"So our next question is, what inspired you the most to pursue this kind of business" he asked.

"Well, I was always good with computers and so I choose to study something easy and something hard" she said. Kurtis laughed a little and continued, "So computer engineering is easy ? And you said something hard too ? Did you do a double career ? How is it possible that you're graduated then ?" he fired all at the same time.

Birdie laughed and answered "Yeah I did a double career with computer engineering and biochemistry which was the "hard" thing, and I skipped a year and half, that's why I graduated"

They continued their interview.

"That's impressive" Kurtis said to her last answer, "So our next question is what are your favourite hobbies ?" Kurtis asked again

"Well I love to play piano, and I'm pretty good at cooking. And I used to read a lot, now I just do have a lot of time. I also like to play sports, you know to stay fit" she said with giggling.

"Oh that's wonderful, would you like to play the piano for us ? We have one right here" he said. This is the moment Birdie knew she screwed up.
