Chapter 28 - adventurers (1/3)

Marv and Alyssa left the room together and descended the stairs back to the first floor. but the first thing Marv did was head back to the counter and found the inn owner. without asking whether she cared or not he apologised if there had been any noise from their activities and placed two silver coins that Alyssa had given him on the counter. with that, the duo soon decided to leave the inn when they suddenly came face to face with Masha who stood before them with a puzzled look on her face.

"why were you guys in this place? a lot of criminals and thugs gather in such inns. if you had just asked I could have shown you the hotel district."

Masha talked slowly and was still bewildered. although neither Marv nor Alyssa spoke Masha could sense something had happened between them because they kept looking at each other as she talked. call it womanly instinct if you will.

Alyssa apologised to Masha and asked if she knew where the adventurers guild was located. when Masha asked why Alyssa simply told her...

"so that we can take the adventurers test obviously...we are going to become an adventuring party after all and it's probably best to do it legally."

Alyssa rolled her eyes as she reminded Masha that they were a soon to be a party. Masha was still hostile towards Marv and considered him as a nuisance but for the sake of pleasing lady Alyssa, she managed to tuck away her ego and led the other two out of the inn.

the guild was surprisingly close to the inn as it only took them two minutes of walking towards the right of the city to reach it.

the building was similar to a two-storey building back in Marv's world. the architecture was similar to large buildings from Europe. the building had two statues of gargoyles sitting on two pillars just protruding through the building's roof. the building was painted red and white just like the town hall. there was a giant banner hanging just above the two red doors with a sword piercing through a closed book. the emblem of the adventurers guild association. the sword represented all the combat adventurers while the book represented all the mage adventurers.

Marv followed Masha and Alyssa and entered the open door. the interior was vastly different from the town hall where there were active orderliness and a peaceful atmosphere. the inside of the guild building was noisy and filled with people wearing armours and weaponry. the occasional yell for a waitress could be heard and there was a large group of people surrounding a large bulletin board. Marv gazed around and felt very small the next second, he looked at his simple clothes and then at the adventurers wearing grand armour and holding grand weapons.

Masha led the group to the left side of the guild which was quieter and less full. that was because the left area was where people usually came to register as adventurers and it had been a tradition to give the new adventurers space to have a smooth registry. there weren't too many people in the guild who liked to be douchebags...that doesn't mean that they aren't present.

Masha stood before a receptionist who was casually writing something on a document behind the counter. upon hearing the group's arrival at her counter the man looked up and gave them a warm smile.

"How may I help you?"

"we're here to do the official adventurer's testing to become adventurers is that something that you can do right now?"

"of course, I just need your names signed on this document and a fee of a single gold coin."

Masha nodded slowly and fished a gold coin out from her battle skirt pocket.

oh! it seems we forgot to address Masha's issue of being a knight to Arcane city. you see resignation isn't as simple as dropping a bomb and declaring that you were leaving the knights. if so it would cause a few problems for the royal family. when given the title of a knight you have officially devoted your life to the royal family and the empire thus your life is already forfeit. however, there is a solution to people who no longer want to be official knights. that solution was being demoted to the positions of honorary knight where you were still under the knight's code to protect the people and serve the royal family while at the same time gaining the freedom to live your life as you wish. this was Masha decided to do and got official permission from the knight captain.

she still chose to wear her knight's armour though.

with the transaction complete and the group filling their names on the document. the man stood up and requested for them to follow him. he led them through a door next to the receptions and they walked down a small corridor. there was nothing admirable about the corridor so Marv paid no attention to it. they reached a wooden door that looked like it was rotting but stood firm in its place.

the man then opened the door to reveal a large empty damp room. Marv felt odd looking at the room which had water leaking through the ceiling and moss growing on the stone walls. the man insisted for them to enter and told them that the test was soon to begin.

he then closed the door behind him as he left the three alone in the room. when the door closed Marv felt another presence in the room rapidly switching positions. he couldn't locate where it was or what it was. then suddenly the presence stopped moving and stood before the three covered in a shadow.

the person stepped out of the shadow and revealed his grinning face. he looked at the three and the grin on his face widened more. he then let out a burst of magical presence and the three felt the ground under them shake and the leaking from the ceiling quickened.

the man had a large battle axe on his back. he was about the same height as Alyssa and Marv and had black dreadlocks, he was a dark-skinned man and was looking slightly malnourished. his eyes were shut closed and he held his hands behind his back leisurely.

"let's see what you can do."
