I'm Judy Brooks. A plain and boring name for a plain and boring woman. I am officially 25 years old this year and everyday just feels like another step closer to the end of the walking plank. I work night to night as work is crazy hectic. I don't even remember the last time I saw the sun. It's just overtime everyday along with energy drinks to keep me alive and working at the least.
I walked down the streets as I yawned miserably. Ahh~ tomorrow surely will be the same. I'd rather die than work another day in my life. The only thing that keeps me excited and willing to live another day is this novel that I hold dear.
This novel which was given to me by my late mother was a book bound by worn light purple leather, with wordings lettered in light gold. It wasn't a fancy book or anything but I had always loved the story as it was a means for me to escape reality when work got too busy.
As I grinned at the book I held in my hand, I opened it only to hear someone yelling at me to move out of the way. The last thing I remembered was a car's headlights flashing in my eyes along with the blaring of horns from a tanker. It was too late and before I knew it, the world went black.
"How long are you going to lay there?" a voice asked as I opened my eyes. "Hnnn... my book... MY BOOK!!!" I yelled as I started searching frantically for the book which was my last memento of my mother.
As my fingers brushed upon the familiar worn cover of the book, I sighed a breath of relief as I finally turned towards the source of the voice. Clutching my book tightly, I gazed upwards.
My voice got caught in my throat as a man in pure white who gave out an ephemeral glow stood in front of me. He had eyes as bright as sapphire and hair as radiant as snow that reflected the sun. His expression however, wasn't one of delight.
"Are you just going to sit there? Look at what you did. How are you planning to solve this?" the man questioned me as he pointed me towards the wreckage. A yellow car was smashed against a lamp post while another white car had turned turtle, behind that car a tanker had overturned as well causing the area to be empty of passerby willing to help. The petrol the tanker was carrying leaked out onto the road as it spread across the scene.
It'd make sense that nobody was willing to go there to help as that would also put them at risk if the petrol were to catch fire. As I approached the yellow car, the sound of a motorcycle echoed in my ear as I watched the man on the motorcycle lose control of it and crashed right in the middle of the road, causing his bike to get caught on fire.
The whole scene was basically a gruesome one as the people in the car bled out or burned alive from the fire. I tried opening the door of the yellow car to help the person inside but the handle wouldn't budge. "H-HELP ME!" I yelled at the man in white but he looked at me solemnly. "You should stop. I can't help them as it is already their time. However... you made it come quicker." he said as I looked at him confused.
"What do you mean?! Are you also going to let them die?! Just help me open the car door! It's going to catch on fire!" I yelled. Still, the man stood there as he pointed at something. As I looked at the place he pointed at, my eyes bulged and I felt my stomach growing queasy.
I saw myself lying in a grotesque mess underneath the tires of the car, with a single teardrop rolling down my face as my eyes reflected the fire growing before it. "Wh-what? M-m-me?" I stammered as I fell on to the road. "That's why I said you couldn't do anything. In fact. I'd be so bold as to say it was your fault." the man said.
"H-huh?! How can this be my fault? I'm dead! I mean my... body is there... and how could I have possibly done this?!" I yelled, with tears dripping down my face. My life was already miserable enough but I died just as miserably?!
"You weren't supposed to be here today. And because of that, you set of a chain reaction. Your ability to attract misfortune was already high but coming here today when the driver of that white car was here amplified it. Hence, this accident." the man said as if it were a matter of fact. "D-don't be ridiculous! I'm already dead and you're accusing me of killing them as well just by being here? As if getting run over by a car wasn't enough! My whole life was already miserable! How much worse can it get?!" I yelled as I gritted my teeth and clenched my fist just as hard to hold in the anger.
"... I see... Well... nothing much to do here as their lives were already short, so I suppose your punishment wouldn't be as harsh." the man said again as he opened up the notepad he had been holding onto for a while. "What? Punishment?! Why should I... As a matter of fact, who are you?! How would you know any of this is caused by me anyways?" I yelled at the man as I glared at him.
"Who? Me? I'm God." the man said with his matter of fact serious face. "Hah? You... Got... TO BE KIDDING ME!!!" I yelled again.
