Every story takes a turn for the worse, because there's really so much good you can expect from any story.
So what's the turn for this story?
Maybe I could tell you that J and A end up fighting about something that pushes April to Kurt's side. But that's generic at best.
I could tell you that Kurt makes a move on April one of the occasions. And maybe she lets him have his way with her for a couple seconds more.
Still that's generic at best.
It could be a situation of Jahmal getting a petty type of jealous about April spending a lot of time at work with Kurt, which ends up driving him up the wall.
A possibility yes, but like you'd expect me to say this again, that's generic at best.
So what is the turn of the story?
Brace yourself for that answer, because this turn first needs to take a quick U turn to better explain it.
6 years....
"Do you see him yet", I ask Jahmal. "No not yet.
"I'm guessing he's still hiding out in his apartment", he replies. Jahmal's 's eyes start to focus on the apartment complex floor, while his hands start to strangle the stirring wheel. I place my hand on his shoulder and tell him, "chill bro". Jahmal turns to me with fury burning in his eyes, "I'll chill after I beat these nigga's ass", he soon tells me.
"Yeah but how long are we going to be out here waiting for this guy to come out", I ask him. "Patience! He will come out, I know it for a fact", Jahmal replies. I nod slightly and we go back to waiting.
A couple minutes later we see our target coming out of his place.
"There he is", I exclaim to Jahmal. "Looks like his going to do some shopping with that grocery bag in his hands", he responds.
"We need to be quick about this okay", Jahmal tells me. "We should at least wait ten minutes, just in case he comes back, because he's somehow forget something at his place", I suggest to Jahmal.
He nods slightly, and we wait out for ten minutes.
When it's soon clear that our target isn't coming back, we jump out of the car we had borrowed from my mom and walk up to the apartment.
Between Jahmal and I, he was always been the better driver, hence why I let him take the wheel today.
We get to the apartment door and Jahmal asks me, "do you have the crowbar". I pull it out of a bag hanging off my arm and hand it over to him. He places it in between the hinge of the door and it's frame, and with a mighty force, he breaks open the door.
We walk into the apartment and look around. "Not a bad place for a law student", I exclaim while looking around. "Mmh definitely looks like a place of an asshole stealing my girl", Jahmal replies with a grunted voice.
"Yeah well there's that too. But I mean it's still a really sweet spot if we're being honest.
I mean if you guys weren't current enemies, I wouldn't mind coming to this place to hang out", I tell Jahmal.
Jahmal remains silent as he starts throwing some books onto the floor.
"But do you really feel this is the best way to handle a situation though", I ask him.
"If you happen to stumble on a picture of some guy with your girl looking like they're some perfect couple. And with the caption, future couple over here, what would you do", Jahmal asks me.
"I mean let's first look at the bigger picture of the situation. April was only tagged in a picture that Karen took. So it's not like it was her advertising some new relationship of hers. So it's just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time in front of the wrong set of eyes", I tell him.
"Yeah, if that was the case, why hasn't she done anything to get that picture taken down. Instead she's leaving it to pick up countless likes and comments", Jahmal exclaims.
"I mean you should know April isn't the biggest social media person. She probably hasn't even seen this picture, or knows anything about it", I suggest to Jahmal with my arms raised out.
"Maybe. But I still need to put this Kurt fellow in his place, so he knows not to mess around with my girl", he tells me.
"So breaking into his apartment and scaring the living hell out of him is your idea of putting him in his place. Instead you could be confronting him and April, and perhaps sorting out the matter like mature adults", I say all of this to Jahmal.
"The details aren't important right now. So can we just get into position and wait for Kurt to come back", he tells me. I roll my eyes and walk to the side exclaiming, "fine".
I hid behind the sofa, while Jahmal stood by the side of the door. The plan was, when Kurt walks into the room, I hop out of my hiding spot and get his attention. After that Jahmal will knock him down from behind and we both give him the business.
After about 15 minutes, Kurt arrives and the first thing he notices is the broken door. "What the f*ck", I hear Kurt exclaim from the other side of the door. He walks in and I make my move.
"Hey", I scream out as I jump out from behind the sofa. Kurt with anger on his face asks me, "who the hell are you". He walks forward, failing to notice Jahmal behind him with a crowbar in his hands. With one swing to the back of his legs, Kurt falls to his knees and stays there with his hands flat on the ground.
Jahmal walks up in front of him and opens up by saying, "so you're the Kurt fellow trying to get lucky with my girl". Kurt lifts up his head and with a laugh responds with, "I don't know who you are, but I do know you're going to be in so much trouble for this".
I walk up to the both of them, and already in my mind I'm thinking to myself, "this is such a bad idea".
Jahmal looks at me and tells me, "close the door. We don't need the neighbours hearing this man screaming for mercy". I walk up to the front door and push it forward. But it's a little hard to shut a half broken door, so I was failing at the task Jahmal gave me.
Jahmal noticed me struggling to keep the door shut and took his eyes off Kurt for a split second. Kurt took this as an opportunity to flip the tables on us both.
Without warning, Kurt got up and jumped onto Jahmal with his hands around his throat. They both fell to the ground, and Kurt was on top of Jahmal choking him out. In all of the commotion, the crowbar had fallen out of Jahmal's hand and was laying flat on the ground, out of his reach.
I stood there watching this guy trying his best to strangle my dear friend to death. I didn't know what to do as this was all happening. Jahmal had his eyes stuck on me, and they were begging me for help. He had his hand outstretched to me as this was all happening.
But I just stood there, still with no actual clue of what I could possibly do to save my friend. So I just kept standing there watching my friend beg for his dear life in his shortness of his breath.
Eventually I could see the life of Jahmal slowly fade away, from the empty look in his eyes. He was close to meeting his maker, and I guess he had accepted his fate as his eyes began to close shut. I took one good look at the crowbar lying beside Jahmal, and knew what to do.
I quickly picked it up and in one instant swung it back and connected it straight at the back of Kurt's head. Kurt released his grip on Jahmal and like a large oak tree in the forest, he slowly fell to his side.
Jahmal quickly pushed him further away from him with a couple of kicks. Afterwards he turned over and in a couple heavy breathes, Jahmal fought for the sweet relief of air to come back into his lungs.
I stood there with the crowbar in my hands, looking at this man passed out on the floor. "Is he dead", I exclaimed with my eyes wide open. Jahmal turned over to Kurt, placing his hand over his mouth.
"No! Just knocked out", Jahmal told me. I sighed a sigh of relief, but it was only short lived.
"What have we done", I asked Jahmal. Jahmal sat on the ground and held his head with both hands. "I don't know, but we need to get out of here now", he told me.
"What! What about Kurt", I asked him in a panicked voice. Jahmal got up and looked around. "He'll be fine, but we won't be if we don't clear any evidence of us being here", Jahmal said to me. "What", I asked in a confused voice.
"Fingers prints damn it! This guy is training up to be a lawyer, so they probably deal a lot with those sort of things", Jahmal exclaimed.
"That's the cops", I responded. "Whatever man. Point being, we need to sort out this place right now", Jahmal said as he started walking around. I took a moment to ponder, and soon after shook my head.
"Okay", I announced.
Jahmal and I went around the apartment trying our best to clear any piece of evidence of us ever being there. Kurt was still knocked out during this entire rush of panic present in the room.
After we felt like we did fair justice, we headed for the door. I looked at Kurt still on the ground and asked Jahmal, "what about him". "We'll cross that bridge later. We need to head out now", he responded.
We left the apartment, and drove up a few blocks. We found a payphone and called up an ambulance to Kurt's place. We drove off afterwards and got rid of the crowbar after cleaning it of any evidence.
We dropped off the car back at my parents and took a walk to try and clear our heads. We were both obviously anxious and stressed out.
"Man I can't afford to go prison", I told Jahmal in a panicked voice.
Jahmal was biting his finger nail and acting really twitchy. "Jahmal", I yelled. "I know man. Let me think okay", he responded with. He took a few minutes to think and said to me, "we need to go to the hospital".
"What! Are you crazy", I exclaimed. "We need to check if he's doing okay", Jahmal told me. "And what! We try and talk things over with him and hope that we can put all of this behind us", I ask Jahmal in a highly sarcastic tone.
"Do you have any other better idea", he asked me in a sharp tone.
So we headed to the hospital and after a long struggle, we managed to find the exact room Kurt was being kept in. We snuck into the room and found Kurt strapped to a few machines.
We both stood there and looked at each other. I guess we were both thinking the same thing when we started to head out. But we were stopped by the sound of Kurt waking up. I guess we made a ruckus as we were heading out and woke him up.
Jahmal and I both stood face to face with Kurt. Our eyes all locked on each other.
"What was going to happen now. Was Kurt going to scream and get the nurses attention. Was he going to point us out as the culprits who put him in this hospital", I thought to myself.
But as Kurt took a good look at us, I could tell something was off. His eyes had this confused look in them, as if they were looking at something very unfamiliar to him. In a soft voice Kurt asked us, "sorry but who are you guys. Have we met before".
It didn't take a genius to figure out that Kurt had some sort of amnesia, which explained why he didn't recognise us. Jahmal seemed to figure that out a lot faster than me.
"Sorry. I think we're in the wrong room", Jahmal said to Kurt. Jahmal grabbed my side and we walked out of the room.
As we both stood outside of the room, we both looked at each other and remained silent. We left the hospital without saying a single word to each other.
A few weeks later we found out that Kurt's incident was ruled out as breaking and entering mishap. And somehow that knock to his head seemed to have wiped away any memory of the events for Kurt. That really helped Jahmal's and my case, considering the cops didn't find any actual evidence pointing to us being as the culprits.
After a while I guess everyone forgot about the whole case and moved on with life, Kurt included. But I did do some research about amnesia and all that stuff.
I found out that a person has the potential to have a memory relapse of the memories they've forgotten in a type of shock or reminder of sorts about the event.
So in the long run Kurt would be a potential problem. But Jahmal and I figured we wouldn't even see him ever again, so there was no need to worry.
Now...
So I was horsing around with my wife at our place. I was laying on top of her, and tickling her sides for my own amusement. My phone started to ring and I picked it up from the coffee table.
"What's up man", I said to Jahmal on the other side of the call. But by the tone in his voice, I could tell something was weighing on Jahmal's conscience.
"What's wrong man", I asked him.
Jahmal sighed heavily and said to me, "we have a big problem man". "What is it", I responded.
"It's Kurt. He's back in the picture Davey", Jahmal told me.
