When she said that, I smiled as we hurried down the rest of the stairs
If only the good news last. Once I read the message off, I had pocketed my phone to make sure I didn't run into Aili.
As she was reaching the door, it went off once more. As she was opening it to step outside, I checked it.
Sam: Don't go out yet. There's a sniper somewhere
"Aili," I started, but it was too late
The door was wide open, and the gunshot echoed down the tunnel we had just walked down. Aili's body crumbled to the floor as blood gushed from an unknown area. Tears streamed down my face as I slid down and sat on one of the steps, looking at her body as the door slowly closed.
After that, everything went so quickly, "We need to go," Sam said as I continued crying. "That won't do her any good now. Get up and let's move," she added, pulling me to my feet
I let her pull me up. My whole body felt numb, almost as if I was running on automatic as I ran to her black car. Once in the passenger seat, I sobbed
Sam then came into the driver's seat, "I'm sorry, I didn't notice any sooner," she said, starting the car. "She's already dead," she added, which made me cry harder
"No," I cried, "she can't be dead already," I began as I felt pain in my throat as I checked my wrist. Her name was fading slowly. "If we can get her to the hospital fast enough, then we can save her. If that bullet killed her instantly, then I wouldn't be breathing or talking because I feel the same things she does."
Sam shook her head, "That writing on your wrist takes a long time to fade, that doesn't mean anything," she said, and I shook my head
"I will not live knowing that I didn't warn her in enough time. Take us to the damn hospital," I ordered, and Sam stiffened. "Please step on it," I added as she started driving
"Liz," a voice coughed from the backseat as Sam started driving as the pain started to increase in my throat. "Take my hand," Aili said, "I'm scared," she added
I grabbed her bloodied hand as we sped to the hospital, "I'm here, and I'm not leaving you," I said as tears came from both of my eyes, this time in streams
"If I die, you'd better not join me," she said as I shook my head
"You're not going to die," I said, "all of those first that you mentioned," I paused to catch my breath. "I want them all with you too, so you'd better not die on me, Ransom," I said, looking back. Blood was gushing onto a white towel as it was also coming out of her mouth. Her beautiful face was covered with it from when it was laying in the puddle, but she still smiled at what I said.
"I don't plan on it," she said with a raspy breath, "but what I'm saying is if I do die," she began.
"Don't start with that if you won't die," I said, "we're going to graduate from college. We're going to get married and have kids, and we're going to die old and happy with grandkids. You will survive. If I survived a gunshot to the chest, you will survive this, and I will visit every day until you heal and your back up on your feet."
With that, Aili closed her mouth and smiled. She said nothing else as we all got out of the car, and she was rushed into the emergency room straight into surgery. I stopped at the doors and fell to my knees, soon putting my hands on the floor. One of the red with her blood while the other was soaked with my tears.
"Why couldn't I say anything," I cried as the tears puddled around the floor, "I could've told her to wait as I checked her message," I said as her name disappeared on my wrist completely. "No," I breathed in shock, "no," I repeated several more times. "No," I screamed, pounding on the floor, hoping that it'd appear as I tried pounding the fist, hoping that the pain in my wrist would make it appear again.
I fell onto the floor on my side, the tears wetting the side of my face as the pounding weakened. Soon I was welcomed with darkness as exhaustion took over me.
Sam's P.O.V
Liz's fit of rage and sadness broke my heart. I faintly heard her mutter something before she started pounding her hand on the floor. I felt a presence next to me, "Are you here to tell me that this is strike two," I asked Mic as he appeared next to me with our god of healing Rachel.
Rachel sighed as Liz passed out from exhaustion. "No," she said, "this is not a strike on you. You did what you could. Liz didn't give the girl enough warning. There was nothing else that you could do other than show your true form and power," the goddess answered with a sniff.
"Then what are you two doing here if you're not here to berate me," I growled, "can't I just be stuck in my thoughts and feelings?"
"Maybe because this was the first time you followed orders from someone other than the King," Mic said, and I looked at him
"You can't say that she's the next person to rule over us," I began, "she's only nineteen!"
"She did change his mind about letting you stay," Mariam said from behind me, "you know how many people can do that," I shook my head as she asked that. "Only I can, and that's either saying that she's the next Queen or Liz is the next King," she answered herself.
"But what is she supposed to do," I asked, "she doesn't know anything about ruling over us; she barely knows about us to begin with."
Mariam sighed. "She will finish with her college education and be with her soulmate as we watch the two. Remember what the prophecy said once this started," she said, letting that hang in the air.
I nodded, "Yes, my queen," I said as she disappeared, "will the girl survive," I asked Rachel and Mic as they glanced at each other in hesitation.
"She wasn't supposed to originally," Rachel said, "but with that order came changes in her face that we're not sure anymore. She could survive, but there's a possibility that she'll still die. I'm here to see what the doctors will do and help a little."
I sighed as I looked at the doctors who were checking Liz's wrist and body for injuries. "Could you at least pick her up off the ground," I asked as the doctors nodded and carried her into a separate room. "Let me know as soon as you know. I'm going to stay here with Liz," I then turned to Mic as Rachel closed her eyes. "What brings you here," I asked, and he sighed.
"The bond with them was weakening in the car, but now it froze," he began, "I want to see what happens, I did remove her name once they put the girl under, but even I don't know if that bond is true. I came to help Rachel understand whether or not the girl's going to survive."
I nodded, "You guys do what you can," I said, and they nodded, "I'm going to see where they put Liz and get some rest myself."
They nodded as I went down the hallway to see one of the doctors who carried her into a room. "She broke her wrist while punching the floor. We cleaned her up as well as put her wrist in a cast. Any idea on who could've done this?"
I shook my head, "No clue," I answered, "I'm going to sit in her room and see what led up to this," I said, and he nodded without saying anything else he left. I sighed and sat down in a chair next to Liz's bed, "Let's see what you had to deal with up until now."
Images of her standing up to one of the customers flashed by as I smirked, but there was one person that I saw that I hadn't seen in her memories in a long time. I stopped speeding through her mind and made that meet up in normal time.
'"It's about time I get to meet my daughter's soulmate," my father said with a smirk, "is it true that she was shot in the chest?"'
I watched that whole confrontation with the man as I gritted my teeth. I then saw the conversation with Ginger which allowed for them to get off earlier than scheduled. I stopped it and went to see what Liz's father was doing when he last saw her and Aili.
"You bastard," I yelled, shooting up out of the chair and disappearing from the room right in front of him. "You set this on your own daughter," I began grabbing him by his collar and pinning him on the wall. "Why would you break your own daughter's heart like that? She can't control what name appears on her wrist, and you sure as hell know that she was bisexual even before this."
The man just smirked, "Thought you'd arrive at some point," he said with a chuckle that only fueled my anger. "I do have my own guard. You should know that," he said as I sensed someone coming up behind me.
"I do know that," I said as I thought, 'My King and my Queen, give me permission to reveal my true power and put these people in their place. They hurt the soulmates that I am ordered to protect,'
"Then why did you dare to attack me," he asked with a sneer that fueled my anger even more.
Right then, I was given an answer, 'Permission granted, just don't blow the house up.'
I smirked, "Because they'd only assign the strongest of guards to protect the first soulmates," I said before I flung him across the room as he crumbled into a pile of human flesh and bones. "Before you attack," I began to the guard who was approaching me. "I am only doing this for the sake of my soulmates that I have to protect if you had no plan in hurting any of my soulmates, then back off."
The guard just smirked one of the evilest smirks that I've ever seen, "It was a pleasure guiding the bullet that would kill that girl," he said, and I rolled my eyes.
"That was the wrong answer," I said before catching his fist in mine, "you don't know who I am, do you?"
"Why would I care," he asked, "I'm just going to kill a minor goddess who's worth nothing."
"My full name is Samantha Murphy. I am the minor goddess of hidden brutality, compassion, caring, and co-goddess of gay relationships," I growled as I pushed him away. "Now, let me ask again," I began taking the jacket for my pantsuit off, "Do you really want to fuck with me?"
