Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

"What," I asked, looking up at Sam, who was clean and in the room, then back at Rachel, who was gasping for breath at the doorway after following my run. "Is this true," I asked the minor and major goddess.

The two looked at each other as if they had a mental connection, then nodded. Rachel straightened, then sighed, "Yes, it is, but we're planning on letting you have a somewhat normal life," she answered.

"'A somewhat normal life,'" I repeated, "what is that supposed to mean?"

Both of the immortal beings sighed, "You know about those books you were telling me about that were pretty much written for Greek, Roman, and Norse," Sam asked, and I nodded. "Your life will be that of a demigod up until the King and Queen die either naturally or by murder," she explained, and I nodded.

"How far are they from dying naturally," I asked, and Rachel shrugged, "You don't know when your King and Queen are going to die naturally?"

"They never have anybody check on their health. The King and Queen like to keep it a secret for all of us except for the fates themselves," she explained. "No one knows why they want to keep it secret," she added, and I nodded.

"Maybe they don't want everyone to freak out about royalty dying," I suggested. All Rachel did was shrug before disappearing.

"She'll be back to keep an eye on Aili," Sam said after the major goddess disappeared. "She just went to check on the King and Queen since their replacements aren't told until much later," she explained, and I nodded.

I felt Aili squeeze my hand, and I looked over, "Why does our life have to change so much," she asked me, and I smiled.

"I don't know," I said with a chuckle, "Maybe because yours truly ordered one of the strongest minor goddesses to get our asses over here. I was told that only the King and Queen could give orders like that," I explained as Aili smiled. "How are you feeling," I asked when she flinched in pain

"It still hurts," she began.

"It's going to hurt for a while, and I can feel it," I said, and she smiled, "it kind of makes me feel bad for any of the pain that you felt when I was shot."

Aili chuckled before flinching, "Yeah, that wasn't good," she said as she raised her left hand and flexed it. "For some odd reason, this hurts too. I don't know why," she added as I blushed.

"I may be able to explain that," I said as I raised my casted hand. Aili arched an eyebrow once she saw it.

"What the hell did you do," she asked, glaring at me.

My lips thinned into a line, "I may have been a dumbass," I began, and she glared at me once more. "When you went into the surgery room, I sank to the floor and started crying," I sighed. "As I was crying, your name disappeared from my wrist. I started punching the floor, sort of hoping that it'd make your name appear again. I passed out while doing it," I said, shaking my head, "I was so stupid to do that."

"No, you weren't," Aili said as she removed her hand from mine and put it on my cheek. "Trust me, if I was awake and saw you get shot, I would probably do the same thing," she paused, brushing a stray tear from my cheek. "Especially if your name disappeared off my wrist, hell you can ask Sam, once I saw that your name was fading, I demanded her to take me to you."

She smiled as I looked up in Sam's direction with a questioning glance, "It's true," she began. "She did. It was a little short of the command that you gave me not too long ago," she explained as I chuckled.

"First of all," I looked toward Aili, "that's my soulmate," she grinned before I turned my attention back to Sam. "What kind of feeling do you get when someone orders you to do something?"

Sam sighed as she sat on Aili's left side, "It's sort of like when you give a robot an order," she began, and I nodded. "Once that order is said, all other thought goes out of our mind, and our focus is turned to completing that order no matter what happens."

"That's why you didn't say or do anything up until we got to the hospital," I said, remembering what happened once we got here. "Especially when it came to getting Aili in the hospital," I added, and Sam nodded.

"Yes," she began, "I was awaiting my orders as a robot would do," she finished then sighed. "But if it wasn't for that order, she wouldn't have been alive; so, you saved her life," she said, and I shook my head

. "I was the one who put her in danger," I began, "I should've gone; first, that way, no one would've gotten hurt."

"How do you know," Aili asked, "I probably would've been the only one who could open the door," she said as I chuckled

"Unless it was locked, I doubt it," I said, and she smiled

"Well, let's be glad that the sniper had a terrible shot when aiming for the head," she said as we both were chuckling

"Amen to that," I said, grabbing her hand and holding it

Someone cleared their throat at the doorway, "Excuse me, but Dr. Rachel said that this patient needs to rest her vocal cords, so they aren't damaged," he said. "So, could you please leave and give the patient time to rest," he asked

Sam nodded, "We'll be out as soon as possible, doctor," she said, then looked at me, "I'll be outside with the discharge papers for you. Ginger called me and said that he wanted to see one of you as soon as possible," she said, and I sighed

"So that means that I have to leave," I asked as she nodded, "I'll visit as much as possible," I added, kissing her hand gently

"I already can't wait to get out of here," she said with a croak as I smiled before I left the room. I met Sam, who was standing right next to the door, "Where are the papers," I asked her, and she smiled

"They're in your room with a pair of clothes that Donnie picked out for you," she replied. "Ginger would like a more formal meeting with one of you so that'll explain the choice of clothing," she added, and I nodded. "Would you like some help in getting them on," she asked me, and I shook my head

"No," I began, then she knit her eyebrows in confusion, "do you know how many times I had to either juggle a towel or my phone while getting dressed," I asked with a chuckle. "I will need advice on how to sign papers and write with my non-dominate hand, though," I added as the weight of the cast on my wrist reminded me of my stupid decision

Sam laughed, "I can't help you with that. I've been ambidextrous my whole life, even before I was made a minor goddess," she said, then promptly shut up

"Could you tell me about your life," I asked, "or does it bring up too many bad memories?"

"Too many memories," she answered almost instantly. "I'll tell you and Aili when the time comes," she added, sliding her hands into the pockets of her jeans. I noticed that she was wearing an orange tank top with a jean jacket and jeans instead of her normal pantsuit. Not only that, but her hair was down

"Looking for comfort today," I asked as we neared my room

Sam looked at me with a worried expression, her blonde hair resting on her shoulders, "I was, but I can change if you want me to," she answered, and I shook my head

"Nah," I began, "I believe Aili will agree with me when I say that we would rather you be comfortable protecting us."

Sam smiled, "Thanks," she said, "I was getting tired of those pantsuits anyways," she added, and I laughed. "What," she asked.

"If you have ever noticed," I began, "Aili and I are not the kind of people who favor formal attire," I said. "Now, if you will excuse me, I will get changed," I said before walking into my room and closing the door to Sam, chuckling. I turned to see slacks and a nice shirt laying on the bed along with black flats, a belt, socks, and a blazer. "Okay, either Donnie has talked to my mother about how I dress up, or she understands my taste," I muttered before starting to get changed.

The shirt was a short-sleeved blue shirt as the blazer, socks, and slacks were white; the only pair of clothing that I had some sort of trouble with were the slacks since I couldn't use my thumb much. I then found a brush and brushed my hair out as it laid gently on my shoulder. I then split it down the middle, so the two parts rested evenly on my shoulders. Once done, I slid the flats on and walked over to the stack of papers on the table. I sighed then attempted to sign them with my right hand.

When I was done, I looked at my signature. It somewhat looked like my name but not as good as with my left hand. I got up grabbing the papers and my phone, and left the room, "I'm ready to go," I said to Sam, who was right next to the door.

Sam looked at me, then her eyes widened, "Okay, that's a good look," she said before shaking her head. "Before we leave, Aili wants to see you in your outfit," she said, and I nodded before following her back to Aili's room.

"Hey," I said once in there, and she smiled once she saw me, "I'm going to leave, take care, and please don't give the doctors hell; that's my job."

Aili chuckled, "No promises," she said softly as I bent over to kiss her on the forehead. "See you whenever I get out," she said

"Nah," I said, "that's probably going to be sooner because I did promise you that I'd visit as much as possible," I said, which made Aili chuckle. "Now, no bad ideas, or I'm sending Sam and Rachel to make sure you don't do anything stupid," I added when she smiled.

"How can I do anything stupid when you're taking it with you," she said, which made me glare at her. "Fine, I'll stay here and be a good girl," she said with a sigh.

"You love me, Ransom," I said with a smirk

"That I do, Layzer," she said as I kissed her forehead once more, "stay safe and tell Ginger, I said hello," she added once I stepped away

I smiled, "I will do so," I said, before stepping out of the room, she said one more thing

"You look hot in that outfit," she said, which made me smirk

"Why thank you," I said with a mock bow before leaving, "ready to go," I said to Sam, who nodded and led me out of the building; she had taken my papers and turned them in while I was talking to Aili

Soon we found ourselves in a tent by the store that held intruders in it two days before. I stepped out of the black car and walked over, adjusting the blazer

"Liz," Ginger exclaimed once he saw me, "how are you feeling," he said as he limped over to me

"I'm feeling very well, sir, thank you for asking," I answered as he smiled

"How's Allison," he asked, "she alive?"

I nodded, "She woke up just about an hour or so ago. She sends her regards," I said, "what's with the tent and the formal dress? Did you get shot," I asked all at once, and he smiled

"Yeah, but it was mostly a flesh wound," he said, "that's how I found out that she was the target. They shot me, but then one of them said that they aren't to hurt anybody else, just her," he explained, and I nodded in thanks. "As for the tent, it's something for you both since your quick thinking in contacting your guard here saved a lot of people from either getting hurt or dying," he said, and I shook my head.

"You shouldn't have," I said, "my father's soulmate is doing something for us as an apology for what he and his guard did."

"Oh, please," Ginger began with a wave of his hand, "the whole company insists. You may be getting help from the gods with a lot of this but college, so we decided to help stock the food at college. We also brought some people here that haven't seen you in a bit," he added as he opened the tent flap.

I gasped; the whole tent was full of people who seemed like they were celebrating; the tent was bigger than I thought as it held hundreds of people with a stage. But the main thing that made me gasp was the four people standing in front of me.

"Hey Liz," Tracy said as my mother, Tiffany, and my guy best friend, Garret Horrell, all turned around to see me.
