Chereads / Why Did the God of Love Choose Me?! / Chapter 41 - Chapter 40

Chapter 41 - Chapter 40

My name is Kichirou Saiyaku, and I'm your average shut-in NEET. Video games and anime are my passion, everything else can go die in a fire. I'm 28 and my life has always been hectic and crazy…

Who am I kidding, no it's not. I've lived a pretty doleful life. I've never had a girlfriend, not even regular friends, and I dropped out of high school my junior year. Ever since, I've lived in my room at my parents' house, playing video games and watching anime all day and night. It's the best life anyone could ever ask for. I don't have to get a job, I don't have to wake up early, hell I don't even have to make my own food!

Of course, my parents never agreed with my choice of living, but they never forced anything on me. I think it's because they know they couldn't even if they tried. And if they kicked me out, I'd kill myself! Not really, but that's what I'd tell them.

Well anyway. As a shut-in, no, as a normal person, I've always wanted to escape reality, go to a world that I wanted to live. Where I could do what I want, be free of any burdens and down casted looks. Those words of disgust, the rotten gazes that looked down on me. Of course, That could never happen, and never would, except in my dreams. Or at least, so I thought.

I somehow got transported to a world of monsters and magic, even elves and beast kin! It's definitely the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me, and the only lucky thing that will ever happen to me. Seriously, how lucky could I get?

But as I stood here, in pith blackness, starring at a beautiful woman, I began to wonder if this was the luckiest moment in my life.

"Hello, Kichirou." She greeted me. Her pink hair fell to her shoulders, and her small frame was very...lolita-ish

"Who are you?" I asked as I looked around.

The darkness expanded in every direction. The only light was shining down on her desk, which she was sitting behind. I, too, was sitting in a chair.

"You don't know?" She tilted her head, a confused look on her face.

"Am I supposed to?"

"Yes! I'm the God that chose you! You really don't recognize me?"

"God that chose me?"

Oh, right. I almost forgot about that.

As you know, I'm not from this world. I was brought here for some strange reason. On top of that, I was supposedly some "chosen hero", or whatever, that the God of Love chose.

Now that I think about it, what was I chosen for? Yue had told me that I was chosen to fight for her, but I don't understand that.

"Yes. I'm the God of Love," she stood up from her chair and did an elegant bow.

"Oh?"

"Yes, and I brought you to my office to tell you something." I looked around at the so called "office" she had mentioned.

I mean, you could call it an office, what with the desk and chairs.

"Okay... What is it?" She walked around her desk and up to me. In one fast motion she bowed her head.

"I'm so sorry! Please forgive me!" desperation was strong in her voice. I only wrinkled my face in confusion.

"Sorry for what?"

"I didn't mean to pull you from your world to this one! I'm sorry!" She apologized again.

"....." So, she was saying that I wasn't actually the chosen hero of hers? Well, that actually makes more sense. I'm kind of weak for a hero. "What a useless Goddess."

"ACK!! Don't call me useless, or a Goddess! I'm a God, not a Goddess!"

"A Goddess is a female God, idiot."

"Whaaaa!! That's not true, Gods are more powerful than Goddesses'."

"... I don't know what to say to that ...."

"Don't look at me like that! I'm not stupid! Well, God or Goddess, call me whatever! I don't care anymore. But back to what I was saying," she continued on with her explanation after she calmed down. "There was a slight... mistake in the form, ah-ha-ha." She laughed pathetically. I just crossed my arms.

"A mistake?"

"Yeah, you see, when I was choosing the hero, his name was Kichiro Saikyo." As she spoke, she used her fingers to write the characters for his name. Little letters were left there. It must have been some sort of magic. "But I accidently put your name, Kichirou Saiyaku," she wrote the characters out for my name.

"...How? The kanji isn't even the same? No, scratch that, the language isn't even the same? And a mistake like that? What kind of Goddess miss spells someone's name; let alone the hero they are choosing?"

"Nooooo stop! That's what Aries said!"

"Who?" I asked, but she didn't reply. The God of Love was in front of me, grabbing her head and shaking it as she threw a tantrum.

Is this really a Goddess?

"No one, it's none of your business!" She readjusted her white dress that she was wearing and cleared her throat. "Anyway, I just wanted to apologize, but I promise you; I'll send you back once the tournament is over."

"What's this 'tournament' you speak of?" I asked.

"You mean the AI I gave you didn't tell?"

"So, you did give me Yue?"

"Yue? Is that what you named it? Well, anyway, yes. I gave it to you the second I realized the mistake I made. Soooo... Are we even?"

"...No, she's useless."

"W-what? Useless?" She seemed surprised at what I said, but it was true.

Yue was...special in her own way. She helped sometimes, but most of the time she was useless, always giving attitude and being cocky. She was a real tsundere. "Yep, useless." I repeated

"Well... Okay, but—"

"Besides, don't apologize, you're a Goddess," I scratched the back of my head as I looked at the ground. "And you don't make mistakes."

"K-Kichirou..." She looked at me with watery eyes. "You're so kiiiiiind! So, you aren't mad? You promise?"

"H-hey, stop hugging all on me. And no, I'm not angry. I actually like it here."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I get to do quests, kill monsters, get treasure, and I have friends. That's more than I had in my old life." The sad truth. All I had in my old life was games and anime.

"I see...." She paused, as if she was in deep thought.

The more I look at her, the more beautiful she becomes. If we're talking looks, she really is a Goddess, even if she's a clumsy, loli one.

"As your God, I have the ability to see and hear everything you do, say, and think. So, care to say what you were just thinking?"

"Not really." She puffed her checks up at my reply.

"Well, the tournament, since Yue didn't tell you, is, well, a tournament. The heroes get strong and when a certain time comes, they are transported to the God Sky Arena for a one-on-one fight with another hero. The winner is allowed to take any one thing from the loser, whether it be money, an item, a party member, or their life. The loser just has to deal with whatever punishment the winner chooses"

"...So, I'm going to have to fight other heroes? And if I lose, they can basically do whatever they want to me?"

"Yes, but the same can also be said the other way around."

"But if I lose, they can kill me?" I kept emphasizing lose because, well, I'm weak.

"Yeah, te-he!"

"Don't 'te-he' me! I'm the weakest hero, and you expect me to win! Scratch that, I'm the weakest human and you expect me to win?!"

"I-I'm sorry about that, but that can't be helped. You aren't from this world, so of course you're going to be weaker."

"Don't give me that either, you're a Goddess, isn't there anything you can do for me?"

"My, you sure are demanding. I guess these are the emotions you hide to try and look cool."

"I'm not hiding anything. And wipe that smug look of your face. I'm only annoyed because of how useless my Goddess is."

"That's not a nice thing to say!"

"You're right, I'm sorry."
