Chereads / Delphine of Moria / Chapter 47 - Following the Moon

Chapter 47 - Following the Moon

Being an influential person herself, Delphine understood that Simon needed more time to rest himself if he wanted to walk any further. Their swords were laying together, they were still wearing their armor, and they had their cloaks still attached to them. It was still in the afternoon while they walked along, but each of them had different reasons for taking a short break. Delphine wanted to rest for a while because she wanted to make sure she does not do anything that will make her leave Simon by himself. Simon wanted to rest behind the tree because he needed the time to take a break from the endless walking he endured ever since he and Delphine left the holy city.

Then, Delphine saw Simon trying to lay himself on the floor and had his eyes closed, and he did not want to think of anything else. There was already enough for both him and Delphine to be thinking as they were together in the forest. Then, Delphine scoots over and picks up his head, and she puts Simon's head on her legs to allow him to rest more peacefully. Her smooth body was enough for him to sleep more soundly as the afternoon continued; he did not feel his head moving onto Delphine's legs. Then, Delphine began to play a little bit with Simon's hair and rubbed his face with her fingers.

Then, Delphine said to herself, "Simon, what am I going to do with you? You've already come with me this far into the world. Now, you've given me no choice but to look over you and keep watch over you during these nights. I hate to admit it, but I've never done this before. But, I do know if you wish to be with me, then you must not share our secrets with anyone. For some reason, we're being connected by a fate we both share. People linked by fate will always find each other."

Delphine was a person who would never let her guard down and never allow people she knew to be taken. She would find it awful to let Simon roam in the world unchecked and unmemorable, and she would travel all across the earth to wonder where he went. Then, Delphine lays her hand on his cheek and stared at him for a long time; this a man whom she had no other choice but to protect no matter what happens. She then lowered her face to get even closer to him and noticed he was still asleep while she did this. Delphine knew Simon long enough to start a relationship with him since it was his choice to go with her in the world.

And so, Delphine held onto his head and kissed him as he remained asleep on her legs. He was the only person she ever kissed, yet he knew many women, but she never knew any other man. The friends Simon once knew are all either gone, forgotten, or dead by the demonic invasions. The same pain bears both of their hearts as they fought alongside each other against the demons, and their souls were always faithful to how much they hated the demons. Delphine continued to allow Simon to sleep with her until the night comes and the sun sets down.

It was bad enough that when the sun goes down, the demons begin their invasions upon the cities and amongst adventurers. But, Delphine and Simon were in a forest with so many trees, a long trail, and either the sun or the moon to guide their way. It was during this time that Delphine began to hear the demons making their shrilling noises and shrieking at the sky. She did not expect the night to come so soon, but she had to be ready to set out and continue her way along with Simon.

"Wake up. Simon, wake up!" Delphine said. She started to shake his body and force him to be awake for what is to come for them in the dark forest.

Then, he opened his eyes and was wide awake in a split second; Delphine knew herself to be somebody who would do anything to make somebody stop sleeping.

"Is it nighttime, alright?" Simon asked.

"I'm afraid so. We have to get going. We follow the moon," Delphine answered. And so, she helps Simon up from the floor, and they both ran to gather their weapons together.

Then, they had their holders attached to their sides and awaited all sorts of danger when they went back onto the road. They each had a purpose and a reason to be in the forest of Dunsinane; they both awaited the inevitable as the night was already upon them. The moon helped guide their way out of the woods and towards the towering mountains as their goal. If they had to run out of the forest, they would gladly do so if the demon leader and his gang were much more potent than expected. At this point, they would most likely run along with the trail because nobody ever knew how strong a demon could be in a forest.

"Simon, remember. Do not stray from the path. I don't wanna waste the whole night just looking for you," Delphine said. Delphine held onto the handle of her greatsword and did not take it out until she hears a demon coming for her.

"You can count on me, Delphine. I don't think I'll ever get lost thanks to you," Simon said.

"Unfortunately, this isn't the time to dwell on those kinds of thoughts. We'll have plenty of time to make up for that once we get out of here," she said.

"Thoughts? What thoughts? I only think what's up ahead for us," Simon said. He was not thinking about that, and he only ever thought about Delphine in both the nighttime and the afternoon.

"Just... don't do what I would do in an onslaught. And I bet you already knew that," she said.

"I pretty much know a lot of things, thanks to you. But even at that, I don't think I'll do anything terrible at this location," he said.

"I hope you don't. I'm just letting you know now, that in a forest, the danger is much more extreme than before," Delphine said.

"I thought you and I embrace danger whatever it looks like. I'm pretty sure you told me that we fight the danger and not look back."

"Simon, I believe I told you already. When we're in this place, I will take care of all your concerns. Just like the other times, stay behind me and keep holding onto your sword."

He said nothing more to Delphine as he stayed behind her and on the dark road as the moon began to ascend higher. Since they were in the forest, they could hear the sounds of owls and crows flapping their wings in the air. The air was fresh and it would get even colder the more they walk further in the night. Their destination was in the north, so it was pretty apparent that they were starting to feel the cold wind around them. Despite this, Delphine and Simon continued to hold onto the handles of their blades and not be afraid of the darkness.

Suddenly, Delphine started to hear the noises of the night creatures and was ready for an onslaught against them. Finally, there was going to be a demonic onslaught that did not involve trying to find clues on where the beast would be hiding. For the first time in almost a week, she could finally sink her sword into something and be victorious about it. Then, Simon continued to have his hand on the sword handle and not be afraid to use it on anybody who served the night. He then walks closer to Delphine and turns around after facing her back and held onto his sword and points it straight.

Delphine felt Simon's back on her's and also had her greatsword pointing at the scenery; they were both waiting for the demons to come and face them. She could feel the presence of the night creatures coming closer towards them and remain steady in the darkness.

"Simon, get ready!" Delphine said.

"I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Simon said. He continued to hold onto his blade, and his courage seemed to grow more reliable than before.

He always told himself that his strength is in his sword, and he was ready to die for it and willing to die for the person he follows. Suddenly, a large group of demons began marching from the shadows, and each of them carried swords and axes. They were all willing to sacrifice themselves to their lord and king of Hell as they held onto their weapons. Each of the demons made a large circle around Delphine and Simon as they were fearless against them. Delphine had her greatsword pointing at all of the demons who were ready to kill her where she stands.
