Chereads / Delphine of Moria / Chapter 29 - The Voracious Eater

Chapter 29 - The Voracious Eater

Delphine did not wait a few seconds to react to that wretched noise that came from the cathedral; she puts her sword back to her scabbard and starts running. She had no time at all to look for an opening around the other sides of the large building.

"Damn! After her!" Harry shouted. They noticed that Delphine started running onto the ground to get to the cathedral's entrance.

Two guards were standing before the entrance and were horrified by the noise, and they were trying to figure out what to do.

"Hey... what?" One guard asked.

"It's inside. Let's go," the other guard said.

"But the law says that after dark—"

"Forget that!"

Then, one of them slowly opens the door and decides to see if the powerful demon is inside the entrance. Delphine runs as quickly as possible to get inside the cathedral only a few seconds after the door opened.

"What on earth?" One of them asked. The guard managed to get a small peek at whatever it was that just zoomed into the entrance.

"Just now... who was that?" He asked. The guards had their suspicions and questions, but it was impossible for them to freely guess who it was that went inside.

Delphine stopped in her tracks and began to gaze upon the inside of the cathedral and find out where the monster could be. She had to be looking everywhere for the powerful demon, and she had no excuse to not hunt it down.

It's here. I sense it's aura. Because of the side effects within me, I can't tell where the demon is. Where is it? Delphine thought. Before she could say anything else, she steps on a big puddle of gore and a knight was lying dead on the ground.

Another knight with his insides eaten. Delphine thought. Suddenly, a very large figure walked slowly before her and pulled out a greatsword made of fire and brimstone.

"I knew it. It's the work of a voracious eater," she said. She turns around and saw the vicious creature before her eyes; the demon was starving for flesh and thirsty for blood.

Delphine quickly pulls out her greatsword and holds onto it as the demon lifts up his fist and gets ready to punch her down. She jumps away from the monster and lands on her feet, and she tries to study his moves and his every intent.

"I'll send you back to where you came from. And if I die tonight, I'm taking you down with me!" Delphine shouted.

Then, a large dagger came flying through the entrance room and landed onto the demon's shoulder; it was Harry's dagger. Delphine turns her head and saw Harry and Sid walking into the room she was in, and she knew that she would be nothing more than a heavy burden upon them. They both walked towards her and saw the massive demon, and they became just as horrified as they were a few minutes ago.

"What... what the hell?" Harry asked.

"So, that's a demon," Sid said.

"Stay back! You're no match for it!" Delphine shouted. Then, the powerful creature jumps backward and Delphine started chasing after it, and she had nothing but burning rage against the monster.

It was one of the first demons she has faced that could jump anywhere and everywhere; it was a very tough creature to take down.

"What's going on here?" Harry asked. Delphine did not worry about any of their complaints, and she did not care what would happen to them since they tried to kill her.

Delphine did not back down and never surrendered to any creature of the night; she held her greatsword and swore to swing it until her arms get tired. Delphine holds up her greatsword and waits for the powerful creature to make a move. Harry and Sid were actually starting to realize how weak they were in comparison to the ebony knight. Delphine's rage was hot against this demon, and she would rather die than watch the monster breathe another day. The demon's eyes were able to see certain things in the nighttime; they could predict whatever move a normal person would make.

Then, Delphine uses her greatsword and swings it downward at her opponent and so much blood started to pour out. Instead of attacking the demon a second time, she falls onto the ground and seemed to feel unconscious. As she was laying there, so much blood began to stain the floor and all over the powerful demon. Harry began to imagine that it would be the last time he'll be able to see the ebony knight in action. Sid saw something inside Delphine and it triggered his mind; he began to see some connection between her and him.

Then, they witnessed the creature growing his claws and physical strength, and they tried to figure out what kind of monster it truly is. The demon started growing fangs in his mouth and began gaining momentum as it stood before Delphine. The creature's roar was loud and corrupt; it spread throughout the entire building and about a quarter of the entire city. Anyone could hear it roar and it would be sending shivers down their spine and make them suffer in their dreams. As always the case, demons live to conquer the humans and bring an end to the reign of those who would defy them.

Clearly, the monster was ready to sink its teeth into something that would satisfy them for as long as they can draw breath.

"I don't believe it... I can't believe it. How can this be? What have we done to deserve these dark beings come into our lives?" Harry asked. All he could do was question his own existence and belief on what he thought was real and what was fake.

Harry looks down and noticed that Delphine was not getting up to fight back against the creature that plagued the cathedral. He didn't know whether she could have been poisoned or she really is dead; he could not wake her up because she might get up and kill him.

The monster roared again and felt the urgent need to devour anything and everything that stood in its path. Harry and Sid began to get themselves ready after seeing the demon being prepared to eat some flesh and be satisfied.

"Let's give it all we got!" Harry shouted. The demon did not know who these two knights were, but it did not show any sort of empathy for them.

"My sword... it's not doing anything!" Sid shouted. Harry decided to fight back against the night creature, and kept slashing its arms and legs; it did only a few bit of damage on the demon.

Suddenly, Delphine gets up and kicks the demon on both of its legs; she managed to trip it over and start doing whatever she wished to it. Then, she uses her greatsword and pierces the demon's right eye and keeps sinking the blade until it reaches the back of the creature's head. So much blood and gore were spilled in the cathedral, but Delphine could care less of what will happen to herself. She walked towards the monster and pulls out the greatsword as its eyeball was no longer attached to the face. If there was anything that Delphine ever cared about achieving in life was to survive all the nights on her journey.

She had anger and contempt against those who have taken so much from her when she was younger and did not know how to swing a sword. If she starts to see the sword isn't working on the demon, her only solution would be to fight it with her bare hands. Harry and Sid were just standing there and watching the battle between Delphine and the powerful demon take action. The creature started to cover its eye as more trinkets of blood and gore began to splatter and stain its body and the ground. All it was feeling was agony and remorse against everyone who attacked him; he had to regain his strength one way or another.

Then, the demon continued to jump all over the place again and test Delphine's patience, and he held onto his sword. Harry could not see or guess where the demon has gone and what else it could be doing at the moment.

"It's gone!" He shouted. Delphine turns around and saw the two knights standing behind her, and she sensed the demon coming closer to her.

Then, she kicks him away from her to prevent a gruesome death of one of the most trusted city knights. Not only did she have time to have anyone stand in front of her, but she couldn't let the demon live to continue putting the city at risk.

"Hey, why did you...?" Harry asked. But, before he could say anything else, he could hear the demon roar, once again; he could hear his heart beating three times faster than usual.

The demon flies down from the shadows and tries to land a strong attack on both Delphine and the two knights. They all dodge the attack and back away from the creature as it tries to figure something else out.

"What was that?!" Harry shouted. Delphine couldn't answer him because of the intense battle she is having with a creature that none other could takedown.

The powerful monster tried blocking and deflecting all of the blows that Delphine lands on him, but it doesn't seem to affect his body in any way. They continued to fight back against each other until they couldn't take it much longer, and they held nothing back.
