Chapter 3 - Host?

Once again, I awoke to find myself in the Moon Light Field. Ugh, what is this? I feel sick. I examined my body. All of my injuries were now gone. Damn, the clothes I had been wearing during the whole altercation were soaked in blood.

Tch, I really liked these clothes too. I didn't make a lot of money back home, so I only had a few sets of clothes. This sucks. I feel my lower half and notice my smartphone and earphones. I pull out my phone only to find the screen was almost completely cracked, but it still powered on. Glitch marks and cracks riddled my phone screen.

51%, Time: 2:00am, Day: Friday, Satellite connection...1 bar. I make a call the 911, but before I get a response the last bar is lost. Great, no connection, and I have no idea where I am. Anyway, I need to conserve battery life, but first I'll take a picture of the moon.

It's still pretty amazing. As I admired the moon, I suddenly get a splitting pain in my head and fall to my knees. I let out grunts of agony as the pain spread throughout my entire body.

"T̶h̷i̷s̴ ̴i̴s̴n̵'̶t̸ ̷r̴i̸g̵h̵t̵.̶" I formed a thought that was not my own.

"Aurgh! W-what is this!?"

"You shouldn't be here still, this was unforeseen," Something responded.

"Who the hell are you! Get out of my head" I was furious. I've been put through way too much crap in the last 24 hours, I was not going to put up with this.

"I have no name, I'm am merely a low ranking monster in the Demon General's Army." The pain in my body slowly subsided. Its voice didn't seem male or female, yet it was like it was both.

"Monster?"

"Yes, I am a Crimson Slime, a variant species of the weaker slime. My race possesses the ultimate regenerative and metamorphic abilities as well as superior intelligence. Slimes inherently have strong regenerative abilities, but lack durability which is why we don't tend to last long. I assimilated myself with your body, entering through several lacerations, repairing it in the process."

"So, you're some sort of parasite?"

"You would be dead were it not for me. I don't qualify as a parasite." The parasite protested.

It had a fair point, I was recently on the brink of death.

The parasite spoke up "I have a proposal to make."

"What is it?"

"Firstly, I'm not a parasite. Secondly, I'd like to propose a mutualistic relationship."

Can this thing read my mind?

"Partially." The slime confirmed.

"So you can? Also, a mutualistic relationship? You tried to take over my body. Why would I trust you?"

"It would seem that I am not fully capable of conquering your body, had you been a little weaker, It would have been possible, but not anymore."

That makes some sort of sense.

"I refuse this proposal."

"...I see. I'm afraid refusal isn't an option."

Then there's no point in a proposal!

"What's your aim anyway?"

"Survival. Amongst the Demon General Army, it is impossible to survive when you are the weakest."

I got up and began walking toward the tree line that was surrounding the Moon Light Field. I asked a question to the slime while walking.

"Can't you just go possess someone else?" I asked.

"That is no longer possible. I've completely merged with your being by now."

You can't be serious.

"Let me convince you. Extend your hands out, palms facing upward." The slime demanded.

"Fine, I'll humor you."

Following its instructions, I extended my arms outward, palms facing my body and waited.

"There, what now?"

"Observe."

I looked at my hands closely. In an instant, a red viscous fluid enveloped my hands, turning them into razor-sharp, blood-red claws.

"W-what is this?"

"It's our potential. By myself, I couldn't accomplish this. I believe the same applies to you. This isn't all either; strength, speed, endurance, senses, regeneration, I can enhance all of it."

"Turn it off," I demanded.

"Very well."

I contemplated my options which were practically nothing at this point.

"Alright fine. What should I call you? You said you didn't have a name, you should think of one otherwise I'll only refer to you as a parasite."

"Acknowledged. You may refer to me as Erythro. May I ask your name?"

"Erythro it is then. I'm Milo. I don't suppose you know where I should go next."

"I'm afraid I do not, but I would assume you need to break through the tree line."

By now I had made it about 50 meters away from the tree line, it felt like some unseeable force was drawing me in toward the center of the field. I pushed on anyway. I walked push past the first few trees, I was blocked by some invisible barrier.

"Erythro, what's going on?"

"My apologies, I thought maybe that since conditions had changed that I'd be able to leave this place. Monsters under the Demon General, Sonahg's jurisdiction are bound to this domain by a powerful magic."

"Magic...so that's how it is? Like hell I'm going to be stuck in this place.

I placed both palms against the invisible wall and pushed against with full force.

"That is not advised," Erythro warned.

After Erythro warned me, the invisible wall let off some kind of discharge sending me nearly 4 meters in the air. I hit the ground with a large thud.

"I warned against-" Erythro spoke before I interrupted.

"Yeah, yeah, be quiet for a second and boost my strength would ya?"

"...Acknowledged"

I pushed against the wall with all my force (for real this time), eventually, I ended up flying threw it landing face first in the snow. Looking behind me, the Moon Light Field was no longer in sight.

"Well, looks like I made it through alright." I said this as I pushed myself up on to my feet.

"Incredible..."

"What about you, Erythro?"

After about 10 seconds of silence, Erythro spoke up again.

"My well being concerns you?"

"Yeah, well, you are kinda an irrefutable part of me now."

Erythro paused for a bit before responding.

"I see."

That strength was incredible, it was far beyond anything I could have done by myself.

"Forgive me if this is inappropriate, however, I find your body fascinating. There are many components that are still able to work in unison."

Well, there's something we can agree on. Anatomy's pretty amazing.

"Anyway, you know where we are now?"

It's snowing, it looks like some kind of winter wonderland.

Erythro spoke up.

"Let's examine one of the trees."

"The trees, why?"

"Some trees are region-specific. If we identify what kind it is, we'll get an idea of where we are."

Alright, it makes sense. I approached a tree and peeled off a piece of its tree bark. Bright white dust came off the tree and I examined the bark.

I felt Erythro thinking and he soon responded afterward.

"It appears that we're in the continent of Loramoira, a continent ruled by Elves."

"Elves, Loramoira, so I'm really not on Earth anymore?" I responded.

"Precisely, I stress the utmost caution. You are the minority here, please be careful for both our sakes."

Erythro made a good point, but I'm still not sure where to go.

"I understand, which direction should we head?"

A minute passed before Erythro spoke.

"Give me a minute...do you feel it?"

I waited for a minute when all of a sudden I felt like my senses were being bombarded. No, that wasn't quite it, it's like a new type of perception was growing out of the recesses of my mind.

"W-wait this is!" I managed to put out in my state of surprise.

"Electro-magnetic sense. Now go the direction that feels like North." Erythro responded.

"I got it, but how is this even possible?" I asked.

"I once consumed the corspe of a pigeon, dissasembling and understanding its genetic properties. I merely replicated one of its abilities." Erythro triumphantly stated.

"Eh, a pigeon?"

"Yes, a pigeon. Though I am a slime, I still need food."

It's such a strange feeling. I'm stuck in an unfamiliar world and I've been at death's doors twice now, yet I'm surprisingly calm. The only thing concerning me now is getting home, I miss my family and the convenience of modern society.

I really don't even want to think about what the future may have in store for me.
