Chapter 56 - Date? Maybe? Heart Ache

Calder sighed and then placed his forehead against Syria's shoulder. "I'm sorry." He said in a defeated tone. Syria continued to shake and Calder couldn't think of anything else to say. He decided to let her shoulders go but he refused to lift his head. A few moments went by and finally Calder let go of his anger and confusion.

"I can't make you look at me. I know I said we could be friends and I would help you in any way to make you Queen but you're confusing me. I'm so stupid for thinking there might be a sliver of hope. I'm so sorry Syria... I'll leave you alone now. I won't bother you again." Calder said before he lifted his head up. He kept his face shrouded in darkness as he stood up tall. "I wish you well." He said as he turned his back to Syria.

"W-wait!" Syria said in a loud but shakey voice. "No!" Calder shouted firmly. Syria froze in place. "Stop it. Please just don't give me anymore hope." Calder said as he turned his head and faced Syria. Their eyes met and Syria became breathless, small tears ran down her cheeks and Calder's heart broke. He quickly turned around and wiped her tears away with his thumbs as he cradled her face.

"You're so mean." He whispered as he placed a sweet kiss on her forehead. "I," Syria cried as her lips trembled. Calder moved his lip from her forehead down to her wet cheek. "I," She said again. Calder knew what she was going to say next but he didn't want to hear it. An apology would devastate him. He lifted his lips from her cheek.

"I'm," Syria finally managed to say but Calder sealed her mouth with his lips. Calder felt time stop around them, they were slipping into a warm, enchanting world but he knew that the feelings were only one sided. Just as he was about to pull away Syria wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. Calder's eyes shot wide open and his heart started to pound loudly against his chest.

Syria then pulled away and Calder seemed to be frozen from the shock. Syria's dreamy eyes blinked a few times then her own shock became apparent. They both stood starring at each other dumbstruck. "Syria?" Calder called out cautiously. Syria burst into tears then ran away. Calder dropped to his knees and clutched his heart. "Of course.... She just pitied me." Calder said to himself as his vision started to blur.

"It didn't mean a thing." He said in a shaky voice as he dropped his gaze to the cobblestone path. "IT DIDN'T MEAN A G*D DAMN THING!" He shouted as he raised his right fist and slammed it against the path. "STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!" He yelled repeatedly as he continuously hit the path with all his strength. His skin tore as the stone shattered under his power.

A gentle hand touched his shoulder and Calder stopped his assault against the stone. Calder looked up and saw a radiant smile. "Your Highness?" Lady Britille said in a lovely voice. "Lady Britille?" Calder called out. Lady Britille pulled out her handkerchief then started to clean up his face. "Are you alright?" She asked sweetly.

Calder jerked away from her touch as a chill ran down his body. He didn't like her touching him. He got up then looked down at Lady Britille. "Ah! You're bleeding!" She shouted in horror as she pointed towards his hand. Calder moved the injured hand behind his back and looked at Lady Britille coldly. Lady Britille flinched as her handmaid bowed. "Your Highness you must get medical attention." She said courtly.

"And you should mind your place." Calder said as he shot the handmaid a deadly glare. "Y-your H-highness." Lady Britille squeaked. Calder sighed then looked at Lady Britille. "I apologize. I must take my leave. I will come find you later to make up for my attitude." He said through clenched teeth as he gave Lady Britille a deep bow.

"I-it's alright." Lady Britille stuttered but Calder caught her undertone. His eyes shot wide open and he stood up right away. He looked into Lady Britille's face. "Y-your Highness?!" Lyay Britille shouted in a panic but it was already too late. Calder missed whatever expression she had on. He narrowed his gaze as he looked at her. "I don't like playing games." He said coolly then turned and walked away. Leaving a pair of gawking ladies.

"Sir." Rutley said in a low voice as he stepped beside him after Calder created a fair distance between him and the ladies. "Did you see her face?" Calder asked darkly as they walked towards the Infirmary. "N-no." Rutley muttered as they walked. "You disappoint me." Calder replied as he picked up his pace. He heard the subtle laughter in her words. Lady Britille was definitely putting up an act but why?

"Old man I need you to look at something!" Calder shouted as he stormed into the infirmary. "Old man?" Calder shouted again but he didn't hear a response. "Seriously you old goat! I am not in the mood and I need you to look after me before I can go burn off my anger!" Calder yelled. Calder clicked his tongue and started to search the infirmary for any sign of Landis. "Calder let me treat your wound." Rutley called out gently but Calder's anger just rose.

"I don't need this small thing taken care of!" Calder shouted bitterly as he pulled a curtain open aggressively. No one was there, Calder growled at his luck. "Then why are you looking for Landis?" Rutley asked. "BECAUSE!" Calder shouted at the top of his lungs as he turned and glared at Rutley.

Rutley didn't flinch, instead he stood perfectly still and looked at Calder head on. "Because," Calder sighed as he sat down on the empty bed. "Because it hurts." Calder whispered. "Then you should let me treat your hand." Rutley said as he moved towards the medicine pantry. "It's not my hand." Calder said pitifully.
