Chapter 22 - The Unseen Enemy

(Alex)

Alright she was not completely ignorant, she knew that a great Alpha Lord would be able to hear her coming a mile away, she was under no illusions that she was a masterful assassin warrior. She was just a small-town Beta that had an air for hunting, her skills were not even a blimp on the radar, but she decided that she would at least have fun while she was here. If she were to spend Gods only knew how long here, then she was going to make the best of her situation, getting to know the Alpha Lord a little better seemed like a good way to start. They were strangers, drawn together by a twisted sense of fate, it just made sense that they should figure out what made one another tick. When Ace stood out in the middle of the forested area, she knew it was a taunt, that he wanted her to attack him. The man knew that she was no match for him, though he was willing to indulge her, and her wolf took to the bate. Landing on top of him stirred something inside her, it felt right, and wrong all at the same time. Her emotions were in a swirl of confusion, her body was hot, and she felt slightly irritate for some reason.

Her wolf barred her teeth at Ace's, she was ready to rip him apart in her frustration, a frustration that Alex did not understand. Did the marking mess with her that bad, then there was the little fact that they had shared each other's blood, that thought had her nose crinkling in disgust. The memory of Ace's teeth sinking into her wrist, the pure bliss that coursed through her body, made her moan inwardly. That part had not been so bad, she recalled he rather lost it when she pulled his hair, the man was full of surprises. What would happen if she did it again, would he lose that perfect facade of control that he held so tightly to himself, like a shield of armor? Alex very much wanted to see just how far she could push her new mate, the idea of making him lose himself had her shifting in excitement. The crack of a nearby branch brought her out of her self-musing, and at once Ace was out from under her on high alert. It was obvious that he was urging her to hide but the over welcoming need to stay by his side was strong, knowing that he would not be pleased if she defied him, she shrank away with great effort.

Not going too far, she kept Ace within her sights, but hunkered down slightly burying herself into the snow, blending in with the white around her. There was the sharp call of a raven overhead, but it sounded off, not quite the right tune, no not a bird at all. It must be a warning call from the intruder's they had heard maneuvering about the forest, there had to be multiple of them, she concentrated hard on opening her ears up. Having no training that other wolves had, she mainly learned everything from just experiencing it as it went, learning to shift and hunt. Honing her skills as a wolf took second place to providing for her family, though now she wished that she had spied on other wolves a little more to see what they learned in school. The call was a signal, that she was sure of, which meant there were multiple of them. Was this an ambush, but how had they known that the Alpha Lord would be out here at this exact moment?

Nothing was adding up, was there spy within Ace's own pack? The signal call was answered by a low pitch whistle, they were about to attack, but how? Her eyes sharped against the flutter of snowflakes skating down around them, even with above perfect vision, it was hard to make out exactly what was happening. Scenting the air, Alex growled low, the smell of something foreign permeated the air, it smelt dark and cultivated. Ace seemed to smell it also, with lightening fast speed he moved from the spot he stood, in the place he had been was an arrow. It was all happening so fast, multiple arrows rained down on him, he dodged them quickly. Alex could not make out where they were coming from, they seemed to be magically appearing from the sky, though when she followed their movements there was no one behind them. Confusion was setting in and she was working hard on what to do, Ace was fast but there was no way that he could dodge them forever, and it did not seem as if the arrows were pausing, it was a steady stream.

Fuck, fuck, fuck. Alex was cursing to herself, were they invisible or maybe camouflaged? Judging at the direction in which he arrows were firing, there were at least five men, Alex slunk across the ground scooting against the ice and snow. These swine had to be there, she followed the direction of the closest firing of arrows, looking up into the tall oak tree in which the arrows seemed to be coming from. There was nothing there, taking a deep breath she closed her eyes, then opened them again. A faint outline of a form hovered above her, it was almost undetectable, but the smell of magic was there, the man had been charmed. The flick of movement was drawing her in, her eyes adjusting against the raging snow, and she seen it. She seen everything. The weapon he was holding looked almost like a machine, it kept launching arrows, without having to be restocked. The object must have been enchanted also, these men were employed by a great force indeed, if they had possession of a druid. Now that she knew how they were attacking, it was time that she paid them back, they were not the only ones that could blend in with their surroundings.
