Chapter 22 - Chapter 22

Salem used Eyes of the Machinist and saw a young boy leading exactly 46 people through the forest. The boy was just under four feet and was painfully thin. His poor figure didn't help him move through the forest, and neither did his apparent malnutrition.

As they walked the kid was repetetively muttering to himself.

"I need to find him. I need to save myself." Over and over again, only stopping to draw breath. Seeing this, Salem awoke Alina, who had fallen asleep. Salem explained what was going on and created hollow mannequins of themselves. Putting them in their respective sleeping bags, they each climbed their own tree. Salem's tree was the tree closest to their sleeping bags, and Alina's was about 15 meters to the South of him. Both of them climbed about halfway up before sitting on sturdy branches and setting themselves up for a fight.

After about five minutes one of them spoke up and shouted at the kid. "Hurry it up! We only have so long until they leave!"

The kid didn't turn around, break pace, or stop chanting. He merely plodded on, his determination still strong. Shortly after, they passed beneath Salem's tree. After they surrounded the camp, Salem figured their intentions weren't pure. Two of the men came out of the encirclement with wrist and ankle shackles, approaching Alina's mannequin first. At that point, Alina opened fire and Salem followed suit. Alina's accuracy was incredibly poor, but as she continued firing she got better. Every shot Salem took was meticulously lined up and calculated. After four mags with 10 bullets each, Salem had taken out a total of 30 people, while Alina had taken out the rest.

Now, only the boy remained. He seemed unaffected by the deaths of those around him. He just stood there, chanting. Salem sent Ghost down to do a bit of information gathering.

"Why did you bring them here?" Looking through Ghost, the kid's expression was ecstatic. He didn't appear to understand the situation. His eyes had the look of a starving wolf being fed. He reached out and wrapped his hand around Ghost. Salem let him. If the kid could put his whole hand around Ghost and not get burned, he'd let him have Ghost.

Sure enough, the kid got burned. "AAAHHH! F**K!" The kid started cursing at the top of his lungs. Salem soon got sick of the kid's shenanigans.

"Are you done?" He asked through Ghost. "Or are you going to continue to rant for the forest?"

It never dawned on the kid that he was in a bad situation.

"Mister spirit, sir. Could you come with me? I need you so I don't starve, you see. I can't afford much food, so if I bring you in then I can get enough food to last me the year. Please would you come with me, Mister?" The kid seemed utterly oblivious to the fact that if he brought Ghost in, he'd cause the death of Ghost.

'At the same time, though, he seems innocent enough.' Salem didn't have the heart to kill him so he used Return to have Ghost reappear behind his shoulder and made his way along the trees to where Alina was. Behind him he heard the kid's panicked cries.

"AAAHHH! Mister spirit! Where'd you go? Come BAAAAAAAAACK"

'So it seems that he is not the gun thief.' He thought as he made his way way to Alina.

Reaching her, they began to discuss what should be done with the kid.
