Chapter 1 - Ring Around the Roses

Morana

"Well, that wasn't very nice." I stare at my dinner that just slashed my beautiful cheek. The little thing was not accepting her demise, and I was getting impatient.

She ran further into the dense forest, but little did she know I could see her. I sprint closer to her and watch as she stopped and went into a hole.

If I managed to tear your arm off without much strength, what made you stupid enough to think I wouldn't find you there? I watch her for a little while waiting till she relaxed.

As I saw the tension leave her shoulders, I start to walk to the side of the hole, pretending that I did not see her at all.

"Ring around the roses pockets full of posies. Ashes, ashes, we all fall." I spin around and then appear before her with an abnormal smile. "Down."

She screams in my face, and I revel in the sheer terror on her face. With a firm grip on her jaw, I move her forward and shush her with my other hand.

"Honey, it is okay, it will be over soon." The little chit whimpers, and I almost moan at how delightful her fear is. It was rolling off her in dense waves.

I stare at the small, trembling figure before me, and I watch the thick dark red liquid ooze from the place where her arm once was. I lick the liquid dripping from the wound, and I can feel the familiar tingle in my eyes as they become a glowing blue.

"Lovely." Her sobs almost make me lose control, but I squeeze her jaw to suppress the primal urge to finish her. Call me crazy, but I always loved how my prey begged silently.

"Plea...se. Let me go." I pout at her, but my heart secretly races at how her eyes are now losing focus.

"We have been over this. You were supposed to die twenty minutes ago on the hike you should have taken with your fiance. However, I intercepted you on short notice to be my dinner. Don't feel too bad, though. He was the one who would have killed you."

I don't expect her to answer me since she was almost dead. She was kind of pretty with honey blonde hair and blue eyes. It was such a shame that she was dying. We could have been friends.

"I don't make it a habit to talk to my dinner. So I am just going to kill you now." With nothing more to say, I move closer to the half-conscious prey before me. I sink my fangs into her neck and my claws in the base of her neck. The time came to a stop as I saw her life flash into my eyes.

As her life drained, I released my fangs' hold on her. Her body went limp with my nails still in her neck. Her body quickly withered as I took my nails out as well.

Feeling rejuvenated, I move to go deeper into the forest. I make my way deeper when I feel someone take hold of my arm, and I know who it is. "Uncle Wes." I grin, but I do not turn to face him.

"Ana, what did I tell you?" Here goes the three hundred and thirty-fourth speech. Knowing the drill, I repeat the words I know he will say.

"Don't go hunting in the human world." His grip tightened, and I still didn't turn to him. If I saw him now, he would die. My eyes were still sorting through the human's life essence, and until she went on to the other side, I couldn't look at anyone.

I haven't figured out how to master my abilities yet. I was only fifty years young, and I wasn't in school. Until I was required to go to school, Uncle Wes was helping me. It wasn't long until school started; I only had to wait for five more months.

"I know that, until I can get this under control, I shouldn't go hunting for a prey." He didn't say anything else since he already knew how hard I was trying. I closed my eyes and turned abruptly.

I grinned at Uncle Wes, knowing that he is scared of what my eyes can do. "Don't worry, Uncle Wes. I am not going to kill you anytime soon." Though I must admit, the thought seemed intriguing.

"Stop daydreaming about my death, Ana." I sighed and moved around him, with my eyes still closed. "Let's go back now."

I hear his footsteps behind me, and that is the only indication I need to know he is following.

"Uncle-" I wanted to tell him about Jessica's life as I saw her memories through my eyes.

"Not one word about it. You need to fix that killing intent before you go to school. Killing a fellow supernatural creature is a crime against the realm and..." I zoned him out, not wanting to hear what I heard a thousand times.

I just relived Jessica's memories through the essence as much as possible before she disappeared.

How can I get rid of half of me? It just didn't seem possible.

I was the daughter of Death, after all.

How can I not dream of it?
