Chapter 38 - What is the next step

"Remain bent. It suits you." Max said, paving a way to let her enter his room, since she was holding a laptop, which indicated that she had something important to say.

"Sounds like you're scared." Heidi teased.

"I am glad there's a minus-one from girls that like to disturb." Max said.

"Oh! You miscounted, boss. That sexy Smith babe doesn't seem to like you." Heidi said and held the urge to laugh, as Max went silent.

She could tell that he had his teeth gritted already.

She witnessed how Max was repeating press ups the other night, since he couldn't concentrate on working.

She finds the Smith girl to be cool, because it's rare to see him that way. Nothing can make him lose focus, but whatever the Smith girl did to him, managed to anger him to the core.

"Get out." Max said.

"OK, she likes you." Heidi said, but had already maintained a safe distance and ready to evade any attack.

"What do you want to say?" Max asked. He was surrounded by annoying people and this girl happened to be on the top list.

Unfortunately, someone else surpassed her yesterday.

A girl that lacks respect for her elders and was just purely annoying. Max let out a sharp breath.

Heidi's expression took a 180° turn. "Someone seemed to be interested in your life, boss." She said and opened the laptop, but Max shook his head.

"I know." He said.

"You do?" Heidi raises her brows.

"Hmm." Max replied. Of course he wasn't an idiot.

If not for the sleepiness that was taking over, he would have tracked Alicia's number after the call, but would still meet her, of course.

Did you think he was the type to accept such an invitation?

Of course not.

"Someone seems to know when to bring my sister's name into a conversation, when making dramatic demands." Max said and Heidi's full lips twisted.

Max doesn't joke with Emily, one bit. The person might think he/she managed to get him by mentioning his sister's name, but they just gave him a reason to probe their life and confirmed if they were not a threat to his dear sister.

That was exactly why Max played along with Alicia's drama.

Meeting someone because they said he would be surprised?

What a joke!

He wasn't a kid in all these hit-on games and had experienced a lot of attempts. Alicia played her game well, since he was actually looking forward to being awed, but Max had his goal from the meeting as well.

"Link whoever it is to the number that called me and let me know who it is." Max said and was already walking towards his bed.

Heidi wasn't in the mood to tease again. They all like Emily and she doesn't like the fact that her name came up in the drama.

Walking towards the brown sofa that was situated a bit far from his bed, she took her seat and set her laptop on the table in front of her.

Her slender fingers that had extra nails fixed on it, began dancing on her keyboard. The sound of the keypad being tapped filled the whole place.

"Urgh!" Max groaned and reached for the other pillow on his bed and covered his head with it, forcefully closing his eyes.

Alicia's picture surfaced on the screen, making Heidi raise her brow at the information underneath.

The person that was trying to research about Max was linked to Harry, who also happened to be Alicia's father.

The answer to the math was clear already.

"Boss, it's done." Heidi said and a pillow came flying towards her, which she ducked swiftly.

"I've recorded that. Those girls needed to see how cute you are, indoor." Heidi added and the second pillow followed.

"Who is it?" Max asked.

"Seems like a family of the Smith. She's the cousin of that hot babe that wasn't smitten by your mouth watering body." Heidi said, but Max wasn't in the mood to joke around any longer.

He wondered why the Smith and their relatives started hovering around him within a night.

He got up and walked towards Heidi. "Found out the person that called me before her." He said.

Heidi opened another window and began working on the request. A smirk lingered at the corner of her lips, as Olivia's picture popped up.

"Damn! She's hot!" Heidi couldn't help but exclaimed. Her eyes lingering on Olivia's pouted lips on the screen.

She's just her type.

Max, who was now sitting beside her, looked uncomfortable. He doesn't want her near, but she seems to be coming closer.

What does the Smiths want from him?

Something seems suspicious in this whole stuff. It doesn't seem to be a coincidence that both girls who aren't living in the same house would decide to call him on the same day and the time clashed.

"Should I look into the assassination attempt?" Heidi asked.

Max glared at her. "It's none of my business. Block Olivia from reaching my line and let the other girl be for now. I'm curious to know what she wants and how she plans to get it." After saying that, Max walked to his bed, but his sleep has vanished.

"And don't mention her name around me, in the future." He added and Heidi could tell that he meant what he said.

She didn't tease him this time and just stood up and walked out of the room, telling herself to let go of the desire to hit on Olivia.

If Max doesn't want to see her, then she shouldn't crave for her.

...…

Meanwhile. Back at Emma's side.

She was sitting at a corner in the spacious room and sweating buckets.

Her hand that was holding her phone was shaking and lips quivering.

She just couldn't summon the courage to speak after hearing his voice.

She had called Honey for advice, but the system remained mute.

Emma believed that her weakness was a facade, to let trouble stay away from her family, but now she knew it was a part of her.

Her bravery when her family was at a threat wasn't a bravery at all.

This is who she was.

A weakling and an idiot. Just a simple, 'hi' was enough to get going, but she couldn't find her voice.

Max was rich, same as the body she reincarnated in, but she felt pressured when the other party wasn't even pressuring her.

She needs to work on this. She's starting to hate feeling this way.

Her thumb tapped on the dial for the third time, but what awaited her was the response from the network center, on how she couldn't reach the number.

And then, anxiety kicked in.

He just blocked her, what is the next step?
