Killian Jonas Kane POV
"Happy Birthday, Killian…You're finally eighteen." I mumbled as my mismatched eyes tiredly scanned the dusty attic that I called a bedroom for the past ten years. Laid out on an old deflated air mattress that has been my bed for the last five years. Tears gathered in my eyes when I noticed something about the clothes I had worn to bed the night before. They were in tatters thrown around the room. I knew right then what those monsters I call adoptive parents did to me. The same thing they do every other night of the week and twice on weekends, rape me. The tears escaped as I tried to distract myself by finding patterns in the textured ceiling.
After a while, I decided to rip off the band-aid so to speak. I sat up and pulled the thin sheet that acted as a barrier from the cold away from my body. Another wave of sobs wracks my body as I see the new pool of blood between my legs. I noticed the new injuries, bruises, and cuts but only one thing really caught his attention. The belt-shaped welts on his skin from the metal fastening. I felt so humiliated and disgusted by myself.
'Why did I have to go through all of this?' I thought as I tried to stand up from the deflated mattress. The pain in my backside made it nearly impossible, but I managed. I hobbled over to my dingy mold-infested bathroom and did my morning routine of using the toilet, showering in cold water, drying off with a towel that had more holes than fabric, and getting dressed. I had decided to wear my favorite yellow T-shirt( Mainly because it was one of the few things I owned without holes in them) with black jeans and my beaten-up white sneakers. Of course, I had my black hoodie in my messenger bag just in case it got cold. My bag hanging off my shoulder, my wallet and phone in my pockets, and my keys in hand I was ready for the day. I carefully opened my bedroom door and checked to see if anyone was around before I shuffled down the steps to the kitchen. Ignoring the whale-sized complaints of my stomach, I made my way out of the kitchen through the house's back door. Seeing as I am not allowed to go through the front door under any circumstances.
With a sigh, I made my way around to the front of the house. I checked my horribly outdated phone for the time and was pleasantly surprised to find I was an hour early. The plan I had decided on came to a crashing halt when I looked up from my phone. Leaning against the passenger side door of my white RAM pick up was Carson. I groaned loudly as I walked toward him. Squinting my eyes, I noticed that he had a coffee in one hand and a pop-tart in the other. That boy knew better than to bring anything he was eating into my car.
"What the hell do you want, Carson?" I asked, obviously annoyed by his existence at the moment. Don't get me wrong, when it is just the two of us he is like a brother to me. Unfortunately, we can't always act that way.
"Mum sed to get a wide wif you." He responded and my nose scrunched in disgust as some chewed up crumbs flew out of his mouth. Just one of the many reasons he is not allowed to have food in my vehicle.
"How I ever understood that will forever remain a mystery. However, we both know you won't be setting foot into my truck until you toss the coffee and pop-tart." I answered and he glared at me, but I could see the hidden amusement. He still thought that could beat me in a fight, but had no idea that I had secretly taken three different courses on fighting styles. I knew martial arts, basic combat, and boxing. Each had their unique style but I was quickly able to turn them each into something even more unique. Even though he thought he was the tough one, I watched as he dumped out his coffee and shoveled the last of the pop-tart into his mouth. I walked to the driver's side and unlocked my truck once I was sure he was done chewing and had swallowed. That boy liked to talk with his mouth full. Besides being disgusting, he would always get food EVERYWHERE.
"Hey before we leave, I have something to give you!" Carson said as he climbed into the passenger side seat. After he rummaged through his bag, nearly emptying the contents completely, he pulled out a small object that looked like a crumpled ball of old papers.
"Gee thanks, I needed a new ball of paper," I said as he handed it to me. As soon as it was in my hands, I noticed the hefty weight.
"Okay Smartass, I heard the parents talking about two months ago about your birthday. They happened to bring up the exact day and hurried to make this for you with the help of my shop teacher." Carson explained, and I pulled away the crinkled copy paper. Inside was a metal figure of a muscular wolf. It had bat-like wings sprouted from it's back and a vipregated tail. Its eyes were painted to look like mine while the skin like fur was painted to look half black and half white. It was beautifully made and honestly should be put on display somewhere.
"I know it isn't much, but I thought you might like it," he added and I realized I hadn't said anything.
"Sorry, I love it, Carson. It looks so familiar though, where did you get the idea for this?" I asked and he blushed, not a look I am used to on him.
"Remember that book you lent me a while ago?" he asked and I nodded remembering he still had yet to return it.
"You had drawn that wolf inside the front cover of it. I figured you must have liked that one because it looked like you took your time with it," he said and I remembered the drawing slightly.
"Thank you, it is a very nice gift. Not to mention the only one I have gotten in the last ten years." I responded and he nodded with a prideful smile on his lips. I slipped the figure into the cupholder and received a papercut on my pointer finger as I crumpled the paper back up to throw in the back seat. Carson's eyes seemed to turn red as he turned away from me and kept his eyes out the window. I placed the finger in my mouth to stop the bleeding since I had nothing else to work with. I cringed at the metallic taste while Carson took deep breaths in and out.
"I am so glad that you like it. It took me a month to make that lil thing." He said breathlessly. He obviously had pride in his work and it made me even prouder that he decided to give it to me. What I saw with his eyes still bothered me but I decided to leave it be for now and started up my truck.
"We should get going, school starts in forty minutes and it takes most of that time to get there," I said and he nodded with his eyes trained out the windshield. My finger had stopped bleeding by the time I put my RAM into drive. The silence was deafening as we made our way to school, neither of us said a word. Unlike all the other times we laughed and joked until we reached within a block of the place I called hell.
We arrived at school ten minutes before it started, giving us each enough time to get our things from our lockers. He looked over to me with his face set into a hard glare. If anyone else had seen this look they would have thought 'if looks could kill' but I could see the humor in his golden-brown eyes.
"This is where we part as enemies, kid," Carson said and I glared at him.
"I am literally two years older than you, you fucking giant." I spat, referring to his six-foot five-inch height, as he climbed out of my truck. I yelled a convincing 'Fuck off' as he raced toward his best friend and my worst nightmare, Lee DĂrĂ©n, a junior in our school. I sighed as I grabbed my messenger bag and climbed out of the truck as well. I locked it with my keys and tested the door before I walked off toward the school. I only made it a few steps before I walked back and locked it again. Once I was positive that it was locked I made my way to the school's front door.
My hand was about to touch the cool metal handle of the front door of the school when I was pulled back by the neck of my shirt. I gagged as it put pressure on my throat before I was thrown to the ground between my worst nightmare and his two lackeys. Victor Vrag and Anthony
Namhaid stood behind me, both with a hand on each of my shoulders. Lee stood in front of me with a sick smile on his face.
"Look who it is, the little Fagglet." Lee sang before he burst out laughing like it was the funniest thing since a talking puppet. I frowned at him with a raised eyebrow wondering how funny it is since he had said that same line for the past two and a half years. To be honest, I am sure that he is just as gay as me, but who am I too out someone else, even if they are a son of a cunt a Saurus rex.
Rolling my eyes was not my best decision but I couldn't bring myself to regret that decision, even as he slammed his fist into my stomach. Victor and Anthony held me up as he did it again. When he was done, I was dropped to the cold cement pathway. I raised my hand to cover my bruised stomach as the new ones formed.
"Assholes," I mumbled under my breath but of course Lee had to hear me. He turned to me with a hard glare set into his features but I didn't so much as flinch. I was used to the pain he brought into my life, or should I say pain in general. He stalked over to me like he was going to punch me again, but he stopped short. My eyes itched at the same time I felt like I could take on the world. It was as though my muscles had decided to clench while my soul burned with unknown strength and power at the same time. Lee, for the first time I met him, looked like he was about to shit himself in my presence. Anthony and Victor looked between the two of us but did nothing as I grabbed my things and walked into the school building. Ignoring the evil glares cast in my direction, I walked over to my grey metal locker and switched out my books as I did every morning. I closed the boring grey door with a clank and made sure it was locked before I made my way to my first hour.
The loner seat, the one farthest away from the door while still in the back of the class. The one that nobody likes because it is meant for the outcasts. That was my seat, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I hated having people seated behind me, but I did hate the title it came with. I sighed as I sat down, my reputation as a loner once again solidified. I turned the attention of my mismatched eyes out the large wall of windows that made up the front of the school. I watched pointlessly as more students that didn't care if I existed got dropped off by their parents who were glad to not have to deal with their moody angst.
I watched the cars pass by until a blue charger with black stripes going over the hood and roof pulled into the school's parking lot. The beautiful piece of machinery was parked before a boy with a mess of brown curls sat on his head. His grey eyes scanned the school grounds while I looked him over. He was handsome with tanned skin and full pink lips. He was easily the most attractive boy I had ever seen in my life besides someone from my past. When his eyes found mine, he instantly smirked and I raised a defiant eyebrow.
"Oh my Goddess! The hottie by the blue car is staring at me!" the brown-haired girl that sat in front of me shrieked out. Her name was Tifanny but I couldn't say for sure. I found her too annoying to pay much attention to her. I pulled my attention away from the new boy and focused on the messenger bag I had sat on my desk. Reaching in, I pulled out my sketchbook and a pencil before I got to work on a new drawing on one of my many old ones.

My first few classes passed by without a hitch and then it was time for my least favorite part of the day. For most students, it would be a class but for me it was lunch. It was an hour-long and even though it was one of the few chances I had to eat, I refused to eat what the school served. I have standards about what I put into my body. So, instead of eating or hanging out with my non-existent friends I walk out to the old football field and sing the first song that comes to mind.
After I shoved my school bag into my locker and made sure it was locked, twice, I walked to the front door of the school. Once again, as I was about to grab the door handle when I was captured by the hood of my sweatshirt. I didn't even have to look to know who dragged me down the hallway to the closest janitor's closet. It was one of Lee's friends that he called 'The Muscle', Victor. He was a big Russian kid in his junior year of high school with Lee. Being shoved into the dark janitor's closet I grunted as I made harsh contact with the metal shelves inside. The lights were turned on shortly after as Lee and his two companions entered the closet. Anthony closed and locked the door behind him like he was in some sort of gangster movie. Of course, I looked at him like he was a fucking idiot. While I was distracted, Lee drew his hand back and then slammed it into my nose. I slammed back into the metal shelving as the three snickered to themselves.
"What can I help you, ladies, for?" I asked and their attention was back on me. Lee straightened himself and I maintained eye contact as the laughter died out.
"How is that bruised cheek treating you?" he asked with a smirk.
"Honestly, it is better for my health than your face?" I snapped, obvious annoyance on my face. His smirk quickly turned into a glare as he looked at me. I was quick to hold my ground but it was all pointless when his fist made contact with my cheek.
"Look here you little shit, you should really respect your superiors!" he growled. I looked him straight in the eye with a defiant gleam burning within me.
"When I find someone worth my respect then I will be sure to keep those words in mind. Oh, and there is no one superior to me." I said with a voice that was not my own. It was deeper and radiated power. I could see the three of them as they tried to shake off the fear that was just shot through them. Lee was the first to recover and the moment his eyes locked with mine, I knew I was dead. The enraged boy stomped forward and slammed his fist into my stomach. I swear I heard my ribs crack under the force he used. Crumpled on the floor in front of them, the other two shook out of their fear and smirked evilly along with Lee. Before I could even blink, I was surrounded by three huge guys who drew pleasure from my pain. I sucked in a quick breath before I felt the first kick to the back of my head, the second to my stomach, and many more all over my body. I was only five feet tall and I was too afraid to stand up for myself. I laid there and took the beating, even when I felt my bones being broken, I stayed put.
"We should get out of here. The fifth hour is about to start." Anthony mumbled to Lee. Thankfully he agreed, because, after an hour of getting the shit beaten out of me, I hurt like hell. I watched through swelling eyes as those three asshats snuck back out of the janitor's closet and left me there to bleed to death. It didn't take long for me to realize that nobody would notice that I wasn't in class. Nobody would come looking for me to see why I wasn't where I was supposed to be. No help would come and I would die in the janitor's closet of a school that stripped me of even the chance at a normal life. I tried to move so that I could stand up and make it out of the janitor's closet at least. The pain coursing through my body made that impossible as I laid there bloodied and broke. My nose, wrist, and ankle were broken; along with other new bruises and cuts that layered on top of the ones that had yet to heal. The pain ate away at my consciousness as my swollen eyes closed painfully. By the time darkness swallowed what was left of my consciousness, I was all too ready to leave the pain of this world behind. It wasn't like anyone would truly miss me.

"-lene…Selene… Selene...Can you hear me?" A voice called out, it reminded me of the voice I used to piss Lee off. I struggled to open my eyes as I wondered why I wasn't dead yet. Once I forced them open, my mismatched eyes scanned the small janitor's closet to find I was still alone.
"I am losing my fucking mind…." I internally groaned as I moved to sit up. It felt like I was pulling myself apart as I managed to lean myself against one of the metal shelves. It creaked against my back as I sat on the floor. As much as my body protested even moving, I needed to get out of this janitor's closet. I had no idea what time it was or how long I had been in there. I regretted leaving my phone in my bag. I groaned as I pushed myself away from the metal shelf and onto my knees. I tried to stand but my broken ankle wasn't strong enough to hold my weight. I yelped in pain as my broken body fell onto the concrete floor of the closet.
"Stop trying to fucking move, you idiot." the same voice called out sounding irritated. I stopped trying to stand as my eyes flicked around the obviously empty room.
"Fan-fucking-tastic, I have finally lost my shit," I grumbled as I stared at the grey painted plaster that made up the four walls of the janitor's closet.
"You are not crazy, you have not lost your mind, and you are totally sane." the voice piped up again. I couldn't help but be grateful that the voice wasn't an evil son of a bitch that told me to kill myself or others. Though, we did just meet each other so it's still early. I laughed at the thought and looked over the new injuries that could be seen without getting undressed.
"Said the random voice that just showed up in my head." I countered internally as I read the contents of the different bottles on the shelves. Not like I could do anything else as I laid there in my own blood, sweat, and tears.
"Look, kid, you are not crazy and I am not just some random voice. Because you were raised as a human, what I am about to tell you might take some time to understand." He started.
"Okay, for the sake of my sanity I will let you explain before I go straight to the nuclear option of admitting myself," I replied.
"There is much to discuss, Selene, but I suppose I should introduce myself. I am what is called a supernatural guide. My name is Jun, meaning truthful in Asia. Samantha, meaning listener in Aramaic and Amelia, meaning Defender in Latin are your other two guides. We represent three of the four parts of your soul. Normally we would have a human as our host or last piece of the soul but with you it is different. We can feel the power that you hold within." the voice- Jun explained painfully slowly.
"If I am not human, and the three of you aren't either… then what are we?" I asked, slightly afraid of the answer as I waited for him to answer.
"Unfortunately, due to the restrictions represented in supernatural laws, we are not allowed to disclose what we represent. We are only allowed to confirm what you already know." Jun answered and I growled in annoyance. Unsure if I believed all that was being said, I stared at the wall in front of me. I was exhausted and in pain, not to mention all the new information that says everything I ever knew was a lie.
