Chapter 3 - Data

I opened my eyes in a bustling square. Looking around, this place seemed to be a small village of a sort. I see many others walking around but there are some distinctions between them.

"A.I, are you there?"

[Doctor, you do not need to speak out loud. Merely thinking or talking inside your head is able to contact me. You are within the net and so am I. We share a similar data entity and are linked together.]

'Testing... Is this how I do it?'

[Yes.]

'Well... That's convenient. Anyways, why can I... See through the characters?'

[Doctor you are observing their data, since you have lost the majority of the memories due to the neural path damage you may not be able to recognize it. I shall transfer the data I have regarding basic coding and data structure to you.]

'Oh thank y...!!!!'

An electric shock seemed to have ran through my brain as my entire body shuddered.

I stumped unto the ground as the world turned dark hearing the faint screams and murmurs of the strangers around me...

-----

I woke up in a bed, in a cozy but cold looking room. The coldness was probably due to the walls being made of stone... or maybe just my body temperature? Weird, I should not be able to feel anything...

[Doctor, you are in a simulated universe and are a part of it. This means that you will be able to feel everything and anything, of course, I can reduce the sensation or increase certain aspects to a degree, I do require more data. There seems to be strange data protection that prevents me from accessing the internal works.

'Where am I?'

[Your brain had been overloaded with information as I transferred the data to you. You are currently in the public hospital, though a bit shabby, and were brought in by another 'player'.]

'Player?'

[Doctor, observe the people around you.]

I looked around.

The data particles within their eyes that shone from time to time, the strange aura that surrounded them... their uniqueness and differentiating...

[The ones you see with the green aura and complex data structure are the players. Their data are constantly changing and reconfigured depending on what action they are currently doing or the specific thought process they are going through. There isn't enough data available for me to translate the complex data structure, I require more information to do so.]

'Oh... Then the blue are the?'

[Those are part of this world, their data structure is much more simple and not as dynamic. But it is categorized and much more in sheer volume. They seemed to be 'programmed' to act in certain ways in specific situations. Though when you did fall unconsciousness, that didn't seem to be a normal case as the data these non-players went through a burst of complexity before further branching out into simple parts and remaining upon them. They learn and evolve.]

'Non-players...I see.'

As I was lost in thought and looking around in awe, a pretty woman in a simple white short dress walked up to me.

"Hello!" She spoke.

"He..Hello." I replied with a stutter.

The woman smiled as she spoke.

"Thank god you're awake, we were terribly shocked to find out you had fallen unconscious out of nowhere like that! Thankfully there's nothing really wrong with you and it seemed to have been from some form of... Shock? Yes, shock."

"Shock... I see. Yes, that should be it..." I spoke.

The woman checked off something on a piece of paper nearby as she continued. "You're in the public hospital on the east side of the village, there's no payment for accidents such as this as everything is paid for by the government for cases like this. Of course, if you get injured while fighting monsters, that's all on you."

"Monsters... Right..." I murmured.

'Monsters? There are monsters here?'

[Yes doctor, this is a game after all. The data I've gathered while you have been overloaded with information seemed to be that this is a game categorized into VR-MMORPG. A role-play of a sort where people come into the game world, create an avatar, kill monsters and get stronger through experience and knowledge.]

'I see... Quite simple huh.'

[Not really doctor, that was just the paraphrased description. There seems to be a lot of possibilities and potential within this world. I cannot even begin to calculate its sheer volume.]

Seeing my frown as I listened to the A.I, the woman spoke to me with another smile.

"You can rest here for however long you need but please do make room once you feel good enough, there are always too many patients and not enough space you see."

"Oh! So..Sorry!" I replied in haste.

"No problem honey, just let one of the staff know when you're good to go or leaving so we know. Have a lovely rest and a good day" She left with those words. Seeming to be in a hurry.

'Phew... This is a lot of information to go through. So I'm an immortal. My existence is made of data... and this special existence allows me to see and detect the data of other entities.. Is that correct?"

[Doctor you can see so much more, you just don't have enough data yet.]

'Data here data there, never enough data... How do I gain more data? Where do I find all this?'

[Well, I passively gain data, albeit slowly due to the limitations, through the net as much as I can but interacting with other entities or clumps of data is the fastest day to gain more information. Copying and pasting has always been the fastest form of duplicating large amounts of data after all]

'I see... And clumps of data as in...?'

[This entire world doctor. It's all made of data. The players, the non-players, the monsters, and the buildings. Everything. Go out and interact. Have some 'fun' in the process.]

'...Alright.'
