I spoke with the others till an hour had past then walked out headed for the supply tent where they were assigning guns. I walked up after Charlie's had grabbed his gun. The man assigning guns asked me.
"What kind of gun would you prefer?" I paused "Two handguns?" The man laughed "That's a good joke. So an Anderson Manufacturing Model AM-15 5.56 NATO Cal.?"β βI sighed "Sure" The guy nodded and handed me the gun.
I sighed to me this gun was more for sniping then just shooting but I guess I would just bring my own handguns with me on the battlefield. I walked back to the tent I would be sleeping in and heard my brothers voice saying "You all will have night guard duty tonight, teach the new guys how we work around here." I walked in and set my gun on the bed I would be staying on. Togima nodded to me before walking out. I shrugged before speaking.
"So we have night watch. Sounds fun." I heard Buck huff "It's anything but fun." I shrugged "funner than doing nothing" Buck huffed "You have to stay awake and watch and empty field how can you think that fun." I shrugged "Like I said before I sleep lightly so I often am up all night. So staying up guarding camp would be a little more fun." Buck sighed "Well, whatever. You must seriously have some big cojones on you. You don't seem to be even the slightest bit scared." I shrugged "I guess, but I just find no reason to be scared. Sure I could die tonight or lose an arm. But what would be the point of fretting over it? And like I always say, Fear is just in the mind." Buck frowned "hu, I guess that actually makes sense but even still do you not even feel a twinge of fear?" I shook my head "No, I really don't. I've already been at death's door and I feel no reason to fear it."
The others looked at me a little shocked. It was rare to be at death's door any more and live through it. So most didn't know whether or not it was scary. They were all silent before jamie spoke
"Have you really been at death's door?" I nodded "Yes, I have." jamie paused "what was it like?" I shrugged "It was definitely not for the weak of heart that's for sure" Jamie smiled "cool."
I jumped up on my bed and lay down. The others were quiet for a while. I rarely spoke about the time I had been at death's door. And even if I did I never spoke the truth of that wonderful place. It was a place that pain did not exist and even now I wished for that place but I knew better. It was the door that led to heaven and now-days I would probably just go to hell for all the evil I had done.
I listened as the others talked about random stuff. I sat up as I heard something like the bark of a dog. I looked at the others they didn't seem to notice and I listened and soon heard it again and relaxed as I realized what it was. It was just a type of bird that was found in the jungle. I sighed, before jumping down to the ground from my bunk bed and walked out of the tent. I looked around and walked around the tents idly. I soon found myself by the perimeter of the base. The base was fenced in with a seven foot fence with barbed wire on the top. I looked along the fence then at the other side identifying where the landmines were.
I looked at the soil where the landmines were. The soil covering the landmines was a slightly different color than the rest of the soil. Most people would never be able to tell the difference between the colors of soil. I turned to look at some guy with an army dog who had spoken.
"What are you doing at the edge of the base? You should try to get some rest while you can." I nodded "I'll try to get some rest. I was just checking the area out." The man nodded "Ok then move along now." I nodded "Ok then, see you around. I guess."
I walked off headed towards the mess hall when I stopped as the dog growled. I turned towards the dog head tilted. The guy narrowed his eyes at me and spoke in a dark cold manner.
"Who are you? And what do you have?" I sighed "I'm Kanami. New here. Was drafted and I actually don't have anything on me. Not even a Knife. Which is actually surprising since I usually do. And dogs don't like me, I'm not sure why though." The guy growled "Come with me." He then headed for the commander's tent.
I followed calmly all the while the dog continued to growl at me. We entered the commander's tent and I quickly assessed the room. It was small but it held a desk, a file cabinet and a bed. The guy saluted to Togima when he looked up. Togima frowned and asked "what did she do?"
The guy paused "Sir, I am not sure. But rex won't stop growling at her." Togima signed "Ok, So what did you do, Kanami?" I shrugged "Nothing, but animals don't really like me." Togima frowned "Since when do animals dislike you?" I paused "Well, since the 2072 revolt." Togima signed "Right I forgot you were there when that happened. Well, She is fine, It's not like she would kill us all in our sleep." The guy sighed "very well, sir" he saluted before he left.
I shrugged at Togima. Togima sighed shaking his head and rubbed his temples like he always used to when we were younger and I would frustrate him or confuse him. Togima signed finally speaking "so how did you manage to get dragged into war?"
I shrugged "Not quite sure. General S.S. Howser had been trying to recruit me for war for a few years. The draft started and he brought me my draft letter." Togima sighed "why would he want you? You would do far better behind a desk like before." I shrugged "well I can't really do desk work anymore. I can't sit still and I did kind of help end the revolt" I whispered the last part. Togima sighed shaking his head "well what a waste for a brain as smart as yours." I shrugged "I guess." Togima sighed "well get back to you tent and try not to cause any more trouble."
I nodded to Togima before I left the tent and headed for the tent I was to stay in. I walked into the tent and jumped up on my bed. Nobody noticed me as I entered. Most never noticed me unless I made my presence known. I listened to the chatter looking at my gun they had given me. I examined the gun before putting it down at the bottom of my bed then I grabbed my bag and opened it before I brought out my pistols. I opened the cases to my pistols and picked up my ruger. I examined the gun before I put it back in the case then I picked up my Glock pistol and examined it. I sighed softly before placing the gun under my pillow. I looked up as Jamie whistled "You've got some nice pistols. Though I would have just placed a knife under your pillow."
I shrugged "I guess it's a force of habit." Jamie chuckled "Well mind if I look at your Ruger there?" I shrugged "sure" I took it back out. I then handed her the gun after I double checked it was on safety and the clip was out and no bullets were in the chamber. Jamie chuckled "A little cautious? Eh?" I shrugged "I guess. It's kind of a habit too." Jamie smiled before looking at my ruger. I looked over at the others who some were glancing over. I watched as Jamie turned the gun over. I watched her. She had a wander filled look in her eyes. I reached into my bag and grabbed out my US Army 15" fixed blade. I pulled the blade from the sheath. I examined my blade before I resheathed it and looked to Jamie. Jamie smiled at me.
"You sure do take good care of your gun." I shrugged "yeah best to keep them in good condition in case of emergency." Jamie smiled "that's true." I nodded. I took my gun back as Jamie handed it to me. I reloaded my gun and set it in its case. Jamie smiled "so where did you get your guns and blade?" I paused "I got them at a pawn shop." Jamie nodded "Cool" I nodded "I guess" Jamie chuckled "Pawn shops are so rare nowadays. Where is the Pawn shop?" I paused "San Francisco on main street" Jamie smiled "Nice. Once my time here is done I'll go visit that pawn shop." I nodded "Ok"
I talked with Jamie for the rest of the day. Jamie was kind of pale even for a white person but she seemed fine. Jamie wore some odd clothes but I didn't question it since I wore some pretty odd clothes myself. I talked with Jamie till one of the guys stood "It's about time to go" I buckled my Ruger to my belt. I grabbed the other gun that the one guy had given me. I jumped off of my bed and then grabbed my knife and strapped it on the back of my belt. I could see Jamie look at me oddly when I did this but, I didn't care.
I headed out of the tent the others either already out or following me out of the tent. I waited looking up at the darkening sky. Soon I saw my brother walking over and he nodded before stalking towards the outer area towards the fence. I followed him holding my gun. I saw a gate and followed Togima as he walked up to the gate. I walked through the gate following the others as we followed Togima through the minefield. I walked silently listening to the soft crunch of the others feet. I listened as we got closer to the trenches where we would guard camp.
I saw the trenches though I was sure the others couldn't since it was almost completely dark. There was only a sliver of the moon and it was quite cloudy as well. I walked to the trench and the others climbed into it. I dropped into the trench and lightly landed barely making any sound. I looked around at the others thinking how well I could see compared to the others. I could already see the others squinting at the distance looking for the enemy. I listened as the others quieted down watching for the enemy.
I calmly looked out for the enemy calmly walking along the trench. The others never noticed me as I silently walked up and down the trench. I walked examining the area around and listened to the sounds of the night. I listened to the sounds of the local animals and I identified the animals and the slight rustling of the wind in the trees and bushes. I silently walked along the trench walking behind the others.
I walked along up and down the trench. I walked up behind my brother; him not noticing me behind him. I leaned against the side of the trench making Togima jump and curse before he calmed back down and kept a look out sometimes glancing at me. I leaned against the trench side and looked and listened for the enemy.
I stood guarding there for some time before I heard a whispered conversation. I looked to Togima who was starting to silently move towards the talking. I shrugged before stretching silently. I soon heard the hushed talking stop then I saw Togima making his way back over to me. I glanced to the forest in front of us thinking about the first time I had stayed up all night.
~
I groaned in pain as someone was carrying me. Where were they carrying me to, who were they. Those thoughts kept racing through my mind while at the same time I kept wondering what had happened. I cried out in pain as the person set me down roughly. I opened my eyes despite the pain and looked up. My vision was blurry so I blinked a few times before my vision came into focus. I looked around. I was in some kind of old factory or old building. I looked down at myself and grounded my teeth. I was covered in blood. I wasn't sure if the blood was my own or someone else's blood. I then remembered going to get off of the plane but something had gone wrong. On the plane something exploded. I gasped in pain as the person who had been carrying me roughly grabbed my hands and zip tied them behind me around a pole. After the pain subsided I looked towards the man who was now walking away. The man had a sword at his waist and was walking towards some others. That's when I noticed the others.
My heart nearly stopped right then. That was when I realized the truth. The plane explosion had been a bomb and those who survived were now prisoners. I took deep breaths trying to calm myself. I shivered as someone cried out in pain as another man tied him up. I looked towards the group of men and strained my ears to hear them but, it was no use they were too far. I sat thinking of a way to escape this place. Before I could think of a feasible plan the man with the sword walked over to me and crouched in front of me.
"You know you caused us a lot of trouble." He spoke in almost Ukraine or russian accent, though I couldn't tell. I swallowed nervously. "You were our target. We know they trusted you with a very important file. We want that file" I swallowed nervously again "they n-never g-gave me anything l-like a f-file" the man growled "we know you got the damn file" he grabbed my injured arm and I nearly screamed. The man growled "tell me where the file is girl!" He gripped my arm tighter. I screamed from the pain unable to think or reply. The guy released my arm and I shakily breathed. I was then forced to look at the guy as he grabbed my chin and looked me in the eye. He had a cold hatred in his eyes.
I shivered in fear and tried looking away but his grip was too strong. He asked "where is the file? If you don't tell us you will feel the pain every one of us suffered due to you and your coworkers' work." I swallowed my mouth going completely dry at the plausibility of being tortured. The man growled "tell me" He was reaching inside of what looked to me, a jacket. I opened my mouth but the words wouldn't come out. The man brought out a knife from his jacket. I went pale seeing the knife and struggled to get away. The man released me from his grip and unsheathed his blade. I struggled even more at this my entire focus on the blade in the man's hand. The man brought the blade close to my face "tell me where the file is." He softly spoke but, his voice was so cold and dark it sent a chill down my spine.
When I did not speak he stabbed me through the knee. I screamed. The pain was so dizzying it made me sick and i felt tears slide down my cheeks. My vision blurred from the pain. I breathed heavily from the pain after I stopped screaming. I could hear the man saying something but I couldn't understand him due to the dizzying pain. I nearly passed out from the excruciating pain when the man pulled the blade from my knee. I breathed through my teeth making my mind go elsewhere to escape the pain. I breathed deeply. I could not let them get ahold of the file. It would not matter what they did to me they could never get that file.
