"John, wake up! It's our turn to watch the kids," said Mark.
"Mmmmm..."said John half awake.
"Come on John, you promised your mom you would do it while she was with the hunting party gathering supplies. We still need to plan what to feed them and what they are going to do," said Mark, still shaking him, "Come on John, don't make me throw water on you again."
"Fine, fine, I'm up. Just let me get ready," John said lazily to Mark.
"I'll be waiting for you downstairs. We have to be at the playing field to watch the children before the sun is at the peak. I'll start prepping lunch." said Mark as he was walking down the steps.
"Alright, we got the food. We have twenty minutes until we have to be there, the walk is only ten minutes, so what should we do for activities? The hunters will be back before dusk," said Mark.
"Why do we even have to watch the kids? We should be training. We're almost adults, our coming of age ceremony is nearing and from there we could join the hunting party. Or at least guard the gates like my brother Gabriel and his wife Karen," complained John.
"First of all, you just turned ten and seven a full moon ago. Secondly, you told you mom you would. Third, by speaking in such a manner shows you are not ready to handle bigger responsibility. They would never take anyone so impulsive as a guard or hunter. Finally, Gabriel and Karen are both two and one, so they're old enough," Mark stated flatly.
"Whatever," said John as he grabbed the box filled with food and snacks for later. But, he knew his best friend was right. They quickly walked to the destination in silence.
