Chapter 18 - Port City Clue

Joshua just kept picking off the Pigmen that ran away causing more fear to spread amongst the Pigmen.

This then heightened the fear of the Pigmen causing for more of them to run away and become shredded by Joshua's evil claws.

It was a viscous cycle.

"STOP! Can't you see?! If you run you will only die! STAY TOGETHER!!"

The leader of the Pigmen calmed his spouse and screamed at his men when he saw the situation was spiraling out of control.

They noticed that the goblins had retreated to the village, but couldn't be bothered with them at the moment.

'They were able to regain control over the situation. What now...'

'I have already gotten rid of half of the Pigmen, but if I confront them up front then I wouldn't be able to deal with all of them at once.'

Joshua was now stuck between a rock and a hard place. Should he just retreat?

The Pigmen were also contemplating the same question because they obviously could not continue fighting the goblins with an unknown danger nearby.

"Retreat!" The Pigman leader made the decision with a reluctant and unhappy face. Though he was unsatisfied, especially with victory over the goblins within his grasp, he knew that it was the best choice at the moment.

Hearing their leader's decision the Pigmen unhesitatingly began to leave. Of course while keeping together for fear of the enemy picking them off one by one.

'They're leaving. It's a shame that I didn't get to kill the female Pigman leader, but at least I saved the goblins. That should have netted me a few levels at least.'

Waiting a bit and seeing that the Pigmen were not returning, Joshua walked out of the shrubbery into the open where the goblin leader could see.

The goblin leader tensed up when he saw a giant wolf covered in blood headed towards him.

He didn't know if the wolf was an enemy or not, as while it did help kill off the Pigmen, they might have just been targeted out of convenience. The wolf might be thinking of attacking the goblins next now that the Pigmen has left.

It was then that the wolf let out a bark.

"Hello."

The goblin leader was shocked to find that he was able to understand what the wolf was saying, but didn't question it as countless skills existed in the world.

"Hello mighty wolf. What might you want with our humble goblin village."

'They really are goblins.' Joshua's eyes shined at the sight of a creature of fantasy in real life.

Joshua was just testing to see if his inherit skill could work both ways not just translating what others say, but also what he says.

He was pleasantly surprised to see that his skill really did work both ways.

"Nothing really. I was just passing by and saw what happened and decided to intervene on a whim." Joshua responded.

"Then I shall thank you on behalf of the village. Though you say you did it on a whim, that whim saved our village so we are forever in your debt."

"No need to be polite if you really are thankful then why don't you show me around the village?" Joshua was kind of shocked at how the polite and intelligent the goblin was.

"No problem, but we will be relocating our village soon in case the Pigmen come back"

"No problem."

With that Joshua was shown around the village. At first the goblins were wary seeing a giant wolf covered in blood roaming their village, but after the goblin leader reassured them that I was the one who saved them they became less wary and more curious.

The village looked like what tribal humans back in the day lived in. The "houses" or if you could call them that, were actually just thatch huts. They used piles of leaves as their bedding and that was pretty much all that was in the homes.

Joshua was deeply curious about the goblins as they were to Joshua.

Joshua asked them questions and they asked Joshua questions as well. Most of the questions asked towards Josh was mainly basic questions as they didn't ponder too deeply at Joshua's existence.

Joshua on the other hand was extremely curious at the very existence of these fantasy creatures. He asked just about any question that came into his head.

The goblins were happy to shed some light on the origin of their village and how their species worked.

First, about the system goblins follow.

They said that most follow the beast system evolving into a higher species. The leader was a tier 2 hobgoblin while the village had an assortment of goblins and high goblins.

Joshua was told that a few unfortunate goblins were born in the class system which didn't fit well with goblins and that most goblins that did died early.

Turns out the village was an offshoot of a subsidiary city of the main port city, Chaos Convene.

'Port city... isn't that where the teacher in the human village said to go if the kids got stronger and wanted to get to the highlands?'

'If I want to become a god I need to go to a port city eventually, and by the sounds of this the city Chaos Convene is the closest one to me.'

The hobgoblin chief continued with his explanation and Joshua did not want to interrupt him so he parked his questions for after the hobgoblin was done.

Supposedly about a dozen years ago an orc, a species that was on the higher side of tier 4, that evolved from a goblin founded this goblin village all those years ago.

He was someone who was discriminated by those living in the city and decided to leave the corrupt city behind and start his own village in the wilderness.

Joshua could hear the tone of worship in the hobgoblin's voice, but that quickly turned into one of sorrow.

The goblin village wouldn't have been bullied by the surrounding tribes such as the Pigmen tribe if their leader was still with them.

Unfortunately last year the orc leader had been ambushed by the surrounding tribe leaders and had fallen. Even though the tribe leaders were nowhere near tier 4 like the orc, but as they say even enough ants could kill an elephant.

That was exactly what happened. At first there were about fifty to eighty small tribes scattered across the forest, but after the fight with the orc even though they won they suffered severe losses.

Even when being besieged by hundreds the orc was able to wipe out 90 percent of those that attacked him before falling.

This left the tribes with about only maybe a dozen tribes remaining.

This is when misfortune fell on the goblin village that the orc founded.

It had been targeted since by the remaining tribes in fear that a goblin would evolve into another orc or higher species.
