Chapter 3 - A Lead

Ring~ Ring~

In the bright daylight Jake received a phone call. He saw the name of the caller and turned around while walking along with Simon in the garden of the Saint Maria Hospital.

"Hello! —yes —okay—at what time? —oh—is it ready? —good—yeah—yeah—okay I'll tell him right now—yeah, take care. And thank you!", Jake hung up.

"Was it your fiancé?", asked Simon as he noticed Jake ended hung up. "No! she never calls me this early." Jake replied with annoyance. "Then who was it?", Simon inquired. "…the report of autopsy has been concluded. They said that they will send me an email." Said Jake.

Ring~

A notification of email pop-up on the screen of Jake's cell phone. "Their service is really fast." Jake complimented softly. "The report is here Detective!", Jake handed his phone to Simon. Simon stared at the screen for a moment, while Jake was anxiously waiting for Simon's response regarding the report.

"As I suspected!", Simon sneered. Jake raised his brows asked with curiosity, "What? What is it?"

"This case is not as simple as it seems." Simon replied and looked towards Jake who seemed puzzled by his answer. Jake wanted to know the results so badly therefore, he asked, "Would you mind telling me?"

"This isn't just a car accident. This is all I can say for now!", Simon responded indifferently and handed the phone to the latter. Jake frowned when he heard Simon. His pupils dilated when he read the report and said in a hurry, "You mean —".

"YES! —that's exactly what I meant." Simon nodded sternly. "We need to investigate it more thoroughly. I am afraid, this involves more than just two people. Come on let's go!", he added, and went back into the building.

...….

Knock! Knock!

"Chief! There are two cops asking for your time." A nurse informed a male doctor who was sitting in his office while drinking coffee. He was the chief of the department, passed middle-aged—black eyed, grey haired, moderate height, wrinkled forehead with a little bit fat around stomach.

"Send them in please." He ordered with his matured voice. A moment later two men came in. "Good morning! Doctor Sebastian Hayes if I guessed it correctly." Simon said with a bit uncertainty.

"Yes, you are correct." Doctor replied with a satisfying smile. "I am Detective Simon Weed and this is my junior Jake Mathews", Simon and Jake both shook hands with Sebastian. "Please be seated!", Doctor gestured politely. Both sat across the Doctor. "Would both of you like some coffee before we begin?", doctor asked politely. "Oh please, don't trouble yourself. We both had coffee, a moment ago.", Simon replied. Doctor nodded and raised his brows, "Alright. So~~ how can I help you detective?"

"You see there were two patients brought here yesterday night around 10 to 11 pm. A child and his mother." Simon said sternly. "Yes, I am aware of that." Doctor agreed. "Then I am sure, you are also aware of what happened next while they were here?", Simon squinted his eyes. "Yes. It's unfortunate that a child lost his mother in such a young age. But—(sigh) who can avoid the fate." Said doctor despondently.

"It's really rare to see concern on your face for your patients, doctor!", Simon scoffed. "We have to. If we don't then people might think that we are just butchers to them and they are like cattle to—" "Do you know who that woman was?", Simon cut in.

"Yes, I do." Sebastian gave a nod. "It means, you do know the cause of her death." Simon asked indifferently.

"…"

Simon handed a piece of paper to the doctor, "Your report says that she died due to blood loss. Am I right?", Simon asked. "Yes, she indeed died due to blood loss while our doctors were performing the surgery." Sebastian confessed.

"Are you sure?", Simon asked for confirmation.

"…w-what do you mean?", doctor asked in a confusion.

"I meant what I said. I asked, that are you sure?", Simon asked of re-conformation.

"Yes, of course. You're sitting in one of the finest hospitals in the empire", as Sebastian smiled at his own comment and added, "our diligent doctors here won't lie to someone's family regarding their death. If someone dies here, they just mention it on the report that someone particular died due to a particular reason. We don't fake the results even if the mistake is from our side."

Simon knitted his brows, "Okay, fine—but—what if, she died due to some other reason…", he looked at the dumbfounded doctor and smirked, "…then your report…means that you're hiding something from us. Isn't that right Doctor Sebastian Hayes?"

Doctor's veins popped on his forehead after hearing such words. He suddenly got up from his seat and yelled at Simon, "A-are you here to put the blame on me because an important person died because she was brought here late!"

"Woah, woah! hold your Horses doctor. I never said that." Simon raised his hands and denied his claim. Simon waited for the Sebastian to calm down; when the latter did, he spoke up, "I just asked you that is there a possibility that she died due to some other reasons?"

"…Sigh!" Sebastian sighed and sat on his chair, "…we don't see any other possibility than that. Our doctors tried their best to save her life but—she was way too weak."

"I agree." Simon raised his brows; he pondered for a moment. After few seconds, he got up and faced Jake, "Jake! we're leaving!"

"What! B-but—", Jake stood in surprise. But Simon raised his hand so that Jake couldn't speak another word. "Is there anything else you wish to confirm detective?", asked the doctor from behind.

Simon turned to doctor, "…No, I wish you have a very good day doctor." He pulled the door, while Jake followed behind. "Same to you detective!", said Sebastian sternly.

While following Simon, Jake was frowning in confusion therefore he scowled, "Detective! Why did you leave like this? It is clear that he might be involved. No! I think he is definitely involved in this case." Jake corrected himself as he walked behind Simon. Whereas, Simon didn't reply and continued moving. "Sir!", Jake said sternly. Simon was walking quietly towards the elevator.

Watching Simon from behind Jake said with annoyance, "Sir! Don't treat my question as a joke!". The former glanced at the guy behind him for a moment and shook his head. Jake noted a smirk on his face and became totally flabbergasted over the latter's reaction.

Lift door opens~

Both entered the lift. Jake joined him in lift. "Okay, if you don't want to talk, then at least tell me what's going on?", said Jake.

Simon mocked, "…hmm. Nah! It's not even worth mentioning." "What!?", Jake frowned by the answer he heard. But his gut feeling kept telling him that something was up with Simon so, he questioned again, "Then why did you leave all of a sudden? Are you planning something for the doctor? Or all of that was part of your plan?"

"…why are you even asking me? I am the one who will give orders around…your job is to obey, not to question me, alright?" Simon chuckled. Jake was speechless for a moment. He swallowed his pride and continued, "…It means that you do have some sort of plan. If you already had devised a plan then why don't you just share it with me sir."

Simon shook his head, "uh—huh not in a million years."

"W-what—w-why are you acting like this today?", Jake became furious and threw another question in confusion. "I am your superior remember. I can act however I want.", Simon gave a shut-up call to Jake.

Jake was literally gritting his teeth after hearing his reply. "Then what are we going to do if you act like this?"

Simon hummed, "Hmm~"

"Tell me sir!", Jake asked out loud.

"…", Simon sneered.

Over silent treatment of Simon, Jake was getting flustered by every passing second.

Lift door opens~

Simon exited the lift with an excited expression on his face but on the other hand Jake was burning in rage. "Sir! Why are you acting like this?", Jake asked with a puzzled looking face.

Simon ignored his questioning and walked further ahead. Meanwhile, Jake followed behind. Simon turned around and noticed the funny expressions of his junior. He laughed out loud in the parking area. Jake had this agitated look on his face for a while and he looked like he was about to cry at any moment.

Simon unlocked the car and got inside. He pressed the horn so that Jake could do the same. The moment Jake entered the car Simon burst out in a laughter for a long time until Jake got out of the car cursing Simon.

Simon stopped laughing and confessed, "—I am sorry for not answering your questions. But—but the thing is that I was thinking of something while walking all the way here." Jake pouted and rolled his eyes to the other side.

"Oh! come on man chill out! Now, don't give me this silent treatment.", Simon pleaded with a smile on his face. Jake didn't reply. "Okay how about this? I have a lead." Simon said indifferently to cheer up his junior.

Jake eyes lit up with and asked to confirm "What? You are not kidding, are you?". "No, absolutely not.", Simon shook his head. "So, what is it?", Jake asked with curiosity. "I have decided that today, we will eat tacos!", Simon sneered. "What the fuck!", Jake cursed in disbelieve as his curiosity got smashed by the weird reply of his senior.
