It was already evening; Simon and Jennifer were sitting in the room. Jennifer was holding a document in her hand. It was the autopsy report of her late daughter. Her face expressions were transforming by every second while she read the document. Simon could tell that Jennifer was getting angrier by every second. "Is this all true?", Jennifer knitted her brows tightly.
"Yes ma'am. This is the report which our experts came up with. If you flip the page, you'll see another report which we obtained from this hospital." Simon knew that Jennifer would definitely lose it after learning about the cause of the death of her daughter.
"THAT SON OF A BTICH!", Jennifer tossed the document aside in rage and stood up. She walked towards the window. It seemed like the flow of time had stopped because neither of the party said anything. Silence took over the room. At this moment, all Simon could hear was Jennifer's panting from ahead of him where the lady stood. Jennifer broke the silence by ordering Simon, "Call your chief!"
Simon already knew that she would ask for this so, he said apologetically, "Ma'am the thing is—"
"Don't you dare say a word any further! I told you to call him so just do it! I don't like to repeat myself!", Jennifer rebuked and insisted. Simon recalled the meeting with Vincent which he had some time ago. He remembered that chief told him, "When you'll show her the report, it is very likely that she will lose it and—will tell you to contact me. It will happen eventually. So—just contact me and don't try to persuade her on your own. I will handle her—you don't need to take the responsibility since I was the one who took the responsibility of this case. Keep that in your mind and don't ruin this." Without any further ado Simon contacted chief.
"Hello Chief! Madam Jennifer wants to talk to you." He stepped forward and gave his phone to Jennifer. Jennifer quickly grabbed the phone and lashed out on chief, "What the hell are you doing! If you people know the truth already then why don't you issue an arrest warrant for that bastard! What are you waiting for?"
"W-what you are saying is right Ma'am. I want to explain everything to you so please, calm down Ma'am! I'll explain everything."
"Calm myself down! …are you an idiot or what Vincent asking a mother to calm down who lost her daughter by the hands of those fucking drug dealers; who your superiors are backing up!" Jennifer retorted.
"I-I know it is hard for you, and I am sorry for your loss. But please if you subside your anger for just once—I can explain everything." Vincent reassured Jennifer.
From the side Simon was watching Jennifer who just vented her anger on poor old Vincent. He thought, 'If it was me, I don't know what I'd had said to calm her down?'
Since Jennifer was a wise person, she didn't retort any further after hearing Vincent instead she pondered for a moment and sat down on the nearby couch. She sighed, "…I have calmed down. You can explain everything to me." But the lady was still frowning even though she said that she had calmed down a little.
"Thank you for understanding ma'am. I wanted to meet you at the hospital to inform you about this but you were too busy at that moment and I didn't want to interrupt your reunion with your grand-son so I left my best colleagues behind in case if you need help."
Seeing Jennifer calmed down a bit Simon was amazed. He wondered, 'What kind of sugar-coated words Vincent used to convince this scary woman?' He sat down on the couch across her and remained silent.
"The thing is Ma'am, we dropped the case.", Vincent said.
"WHAT!"
That said, Jennifer who sat down, stood immediately. She was taken aback and cried out in shock. Seeing her in a shocked state Simon knew that Vincent had just informed her about dropping the case like he did to him. Because he had the same reaction as her. Simon thought that she will again burn in rage but to his surprise after shout out for once Jennifer remained calm and collected and asked, "Why is that? Who ordered you to drop the case?"
Listening to Jennifer even Vincent was surprised because he was expecting a rage art from her against him but instead, he heard a question.
"Keep it a secret Ma'am—the order came from the interior secretary, himself" Vincent informed.
Hearing Vincent Jennifer forehead was covered with wrinkles. "Come again?", asked Jennifer because she thought that she heard the old guy wrong therefore, Jennifer asked to confirm the source who made Vincent to drop the case.
"—I said the order came from the interior secretary himself.", Vincent repeated and didn't say a word because he knew that after hearing his reply Jennifer would definitely need some time to assess the situation so, he remained silent.
Jennifer leaned back to stay calm because she was feeling dizzy after learning that interior secretary was involved. The old lady knew before-hand that the situation would be somewhat complicated but it'd become this complicated, she had never expected. Jennifer rubbed her brows for a moment, "Did you find anything?"
"I investigated a little regarding this but I couldn't find anything because I can't put the lives of subordinates in danger." Vincent briefed.
Jennifer retracked her hand from her brows, "Do you think secretary is working with Whites?" Even though it was a big blow for Jennifer when she heard about case being dropped but still, she didn't lose hope. Jennifer had her suspicions from the beginning towards the White family.
Listening to her Vincent decided to tell her what he learned about her daughter's death. "I can't say for sure but I think Whites are the ones who are pulling the strings from behind because, we heard a rumor."
Jennifer's brows raised when she heard the word 'rumor' regarding their enemy, the White family. "What kind of rumor did you hear?"
Vincent predicted that Jennifer would be interested in this rumor. "We heard from our trusted sources that interior secretary is going for the Secretary of State and Whites are giving their full-support."
"What!?" this rumor shook entire soul of Jennifer. Her forehead was already showing some signs of wrinkles due to her old age but this piece of information made her wrinkle her forehead.
"…It is true that Whites are pulling the strings from behind whereas, regarding your daughter. She got caught in this fire while searching for his missing husband."
Jennifer knitted her brows, "What does that have to do with my daughter's missing husband?"
"I know it'll sound crazy but I believe your daughter knew something about her husband gone missing for five years." Vincent replied.
Jennifer's heart raced from Vincent's reply. Her curiosity rose therefore she said with a focused gaze, "Tell me everything." At this point Jennifer had this feeling that the more she asks the more she will learn about the current matter.
"From my experience I think your daughter found out about the dirty secrets of the White family after her marriage with Lucas White. And since the White family is deeply involved in illicit activities over the past few decades, although they denied it whenever their dirty secrets were exposed to the public. And the people who we helped brought that up either gone missing or died in accidents. Just like Derick Millen your daughter's ex-husband, who went missing five years ago. We have no whereabouts, where he went." Vincent explained to Jennifer.
Jennifer remained quiet for a moment after listening to him. She gauged all the information and realized the magnitude of the situation. "Sigh! The tragedy with Derick is unforgivable. It's a pity that we didn't realize what he was aiming for. Alas! All his hard work against White family went south after he went missing." Simon was listening to Jennifer when she said that. He could feel the guilt in her voice.
Jennifer became depressed when she reminisced about the past. She closed her eyes, rubbed her brows and asked "So, what are you planning to do next?"
"Like I said I can't do anything right now because this case is not in my hands anymore. And even if we want help from any journalist, they will never agree. Going against the White family is just like going against the whole state. So right now, we can't do anything at all. But for you I have a suggestion." said Vincent while regretting at the time when his help was needed the most.
Jennifer was still depressed. However, she liked to know what were the thoughts of Vincent so she agreed to listen to his suggestion. "I am listening."
"I know it's going to sound a bit weird but I think you should lay low for now. Raise your grandson well so that one day he would be able to avenge your daughter, his parents and all the innocent lives which Whites had murdered. Please don't misunderstand me on this I am just suggesting, on the other hand it's up to you, what you do with your grandson is your choice Ma'am. From my experience I can tell that the Whites will never rest until they take you down. You are the only wall standing between their goals and a lot of people don't want you to give up. Your grandson is the final hope your daughter left behind."
"Alright. I understand what you mean. Thank you so much for those kind words, Vincent." said Jennifer with sad a smile.
"My pleasure ma'am." Vincent greeted back. "For now, I'll lay low like you said because luck isn't on my side. I'll wait for an opportunity and if the opportunity arises when I am gone. There will be someone who will carry this burden for me and I know that someone will never fail us.", Jennifer said with determined eyes.
"…Hmm alright! I am glad I heard that from you Ma'am." said Vincent. After a pause, "What about Leonardo?"
"Don't worry I will care of it. I will claim the custody tomorrow from those bastards no matter what!", said Jennifer with contempt.
"I wish for your success, ma'am. Take care." Vincent hung up.
Jennifer handed the phone back to Simon. Simon grabbed the phone and saw the tensed expression of Jennifer and asked, "Is there anything else you wish to ask ma'am?"
This time Jennifer just shook her head. Simon got up from the couch and said, "If there isn't anything ma'am wish to ask then I shall take my leave." He picked the document from the floor which Jennifer threw in rage and left the room.
Jennifer took out her phone and dialed a number.
Beep~
"Yes ma'am!", a female voice sounded in Jennifer ears. "Amanda! arrange the meeting with those bastards!", Jennifer ordered sternly.
