Chapter 5 - Drop Out

Two days later after accident, Simon and Jake were going towards the hospital when a drunk man suddenly appeared in front of their car.

Screech!

Honk! Honk!

The drunk man flinched. "God Damn it! Not this again!", Simon rubbed his forehead. He lowered the side window, leaned his head out and scolded the drunkard who was holding the Vodka. "You punk! Already drunk in middle of the day. Don't you have anything useful to do?"

The drunk man looked dizzily towards the latter and said joyfully, "Hahaha! You're…one of ov…those pigs…aren't ya, who say freeze every time?"

Simon knitted his brows in annoyance after hearing the drunkard whereas, Jake stared at the drunkard and knitted his brows, "what is he saying, sir!"

Simon just shrugged his shoulders in response.

The drunkard spread his legs. Simon clicked his tongue. The drunkard faced the sky while holding the Vodka. "What a~ BE—UTI—FUL—day~", he rhymed.

Jake was getting flustered by every second. He moved his head out of the window and yelled, "Hey asshole! Move!"

But the drunkard didn't any attention to Jake's taunt. He kept staring at the sky and suddenly shouted, "The world is coming to an end! Everybody! save yourselves! Soon aliens from other part of the universe, will invade out planet~~ They will abduct our women~~ and get them pregnant~~once they do that another RACE~ will come into existence and human race will perish~~"

Jake faced Simon and said in annoyance, "Sir can I take this asshole down?"

"No need", Simon waved his hand. He grabbed the radio from the front, "This is detective Simon speaking. Is anyone stationed nearby the west of green zone district, over."

"—this is patrol officer Glenn speaking, over."

"Officer Glenn, you have my position on your screen. Please come and assist me. I have a situation here, over." Said Simon. "What's the situation, over", officer Glenn asked while marking the destination on the screen. "There is a drunk man in front of my car and he's not letting me pass, over." Simon answered.

"I'll be there in a few minutes detective, over."

"Roger that, officer Glenn."

"Sir why don't you let me do it?", Jake asked.

"Because I don't want any unnecessary trouble right now."

"Hey you idiots!", the drunkard pointed at the duo in the car.

Simon smirked, "Hey, wanna see something funny."

Jake furrowed his brows and remained silent after hearing Simon. Whereas, the former leaned his head out of a bit and taunted, "Yeah what is it, you good for nothing drunk ass!"

The drunkard was already having difficulty standing, but when he listened to the sudden rejoinder, he lost his temper. "Motherfuckers!... hey! who the hell…you're calling good for nothing? Huh?", he rebuked. "Is there anyone else besides you? you fucking loser!", Simon remarked.

"Hey~ you wanna fight? Huh? Come on! Let's fight!", drunkard said out loud and stood in a fighting stance like he was about to throw a punch.

"Pfft! No, I don't wanna fight a loser like you. Now fuck off! Before I knock some sense into that dead head of yours", Simon provoked the drunkard and raised his mid-finger to the drunkard.

With that said drunkard threw the bottle at the nearby car.

SMASH!

Meanwhile the drunkard tried to step forward but due to dizziness he fell on the street. "Pfft…Hahaha! Hey loser! there goes your three months in community service", Simon and Jake burst out in a laughter. Simon and Jake laughed hard at the same time when drunkard fell. "Hahaha! —just stay down for your own good you fucking loser!", Simon mocked the drunkard.

Police siren~

On the other hand, the police mobile arrived at the scene.

"The patrol guys are here!", Jake murmured.

An officer came to the Simon's car. Simon leaned his head towards the window and briefed the situation. Officer took the drunkard into the custody for damaging the public property and took him away. With that matter settled Jake and Simon drove towards the hospital.

"Sir, when I asked you about settling things with that drunkard. You answered you didn't want any unnecessary trouble. What kind of trouble were you referring to?", Jake asked because he was a bit curious.

"…oh, that was just to save time and strength, you know. If I had permitted you to take him down, that drunkard might have attacked you or throw the bottle at you or so, therefore, I just saved your ass from that man." Simon briefed as he drove the car. He looked at Jake and sneered, "Aren't I, a hero?"

Jake rolled his eyes upon hearing Simon, "It's really refreshing to hear that from you sir but, why are we going to the hospital?"

Realizing that Jake wasn't interested in irrelevant discussion Simon replied earnestly, "When we were in the office, I received a text message from one of our informants that the child has regained consciousness and both of the families went to visit him. White most probably would have arrived there by now. As for the Guryons, their mistress just landed—" "Sorry to cut in but, how do you know all of that? Did someone tell you?" Jake cut in.

"Sigh! would you rather listen instead of cutting in?", Simon commented.

"I am sorry sir!"

"The truth is that they are already one step ahead of us", Simon said with a fake smile. "What do you mean by that sir?", Jake was bewilderment after hearing such a reply from detective.

"You need to learn a lot in this field kid." Simon answered.

While Jake was lost in thoughts. He was trying to assess the situation but, in the end, he came to a confused conclusion. "Did we miss something sir?", Jake asked to confirm.

"Hmm. What do you think?"

But Jake was unable to come up with an answer so he asked in frustration, "Come on sir! Don't keep me in the dark. Just tell me already!" Seeing Jake being impatient Simon chuckled, "Okay I'll give you a clue then it'd be easier for you to understand what I am trying to say. Are we clear?"

"Yes sir!"

"What just happened earlier, do you think it was a total coincidence?"

"Well, the possibility of the drunkards at the broad day light is really minimum. But sometimes. it could happen to anyone who suffers from bad luck such as you." Jake answered decisively. Before Simon could answer, Jake frowned and asked, "But at the same time, what does that drunkard had to do with it?"

"He surely does."

"What!?", Jake cried in confusion. Meanwhile, they arrived at the parking area of the hospital.

"Ah! About that drunkard, he was just a paid conman. That's all I can say about him." Simon replied and grabbed his blazer from the back seat. While he was putting it on Jake knitted his brows and thought for a moment. His eyes widened and he stared at Simon with a focused gaze. In response Simon curled his lips. Jake was about to say something but then—

Ring~

Simon took out his cell phone from his side pocket of his blazer. He glanced at the latter and muttered, "It's chief!"

"Hello chief! —I am at the parking—yes—I'll be there with you shortly." Simon hung up and put back his phone. He began pondering over something. Seeing Simon lost in thoughts Jake asked, "Why chief is here?"

Simon rubbed his brows and said in a mild voice, "No matter what happens just remain silent and let me do the talking, alright?"

"But sir—"

"No buts! This is an order! If you don't, I'll suspend you from my side once and for all—got it?", Simon cut in and ordered.

Hearing such a threat from Simon, Jake realized that the gravity of the current situation was not good.

"…y-yes, sir I understand."

"Let's get inside. Chief is waiting." Simon said and walked towards the lift.

...….

Lift door opens~

A white-haired old man, who appeared to be in his mid-fifties was walking back and forth. He seemed to be waiting for someone. When he saw Simon and Jake exiting the lift, he breathed a sigh of relief and went towards them.

When Simon saw chief of his department walking towards him, he greeted nonchalantly, "Chief!" "Simon", Chief nodded and greeted as well. Jake was about to salute but chief waved his hand. Chief closed-in the distance between Simon, "Let's have a word in private."

"Sure." Simon agreed.

"Let's go Jake." Observing chief's attitude, Simon invited Jake. But to his surprise chief shook his head, "I only need to talk to you this time." Chief faced Jake, "Sorry son, but stay here!"

Simon was taken aback but then he glanced at his junior and gave a nod. Jake understood and stayed back while Simon and chief left his line of sight.

"Fuck my luck!", Jake cursed himself for not being able to join the conversation.

Click~

Chief locked the door and inquired, "Are you alright, Simon?"

Simon frowned after hearing to his superior. "What kind of question is that chief?"

"Just answer the damn question, Simon. I am not in the mood to crack jokes right now!", Chief reprimanded.

"Okay, okay—I am fine. There! happy now?", Simon looked the other way in vexation.

"Good—good!", chief kept nodding after hearing Simon's response. After a pause chief added, "I called you here to tell you something."

"Well, I predicted that much. Please continue chief."

"Sigh! God help me this hard for me too." chief murmured and spoke, "The truth is Simon… things have already been escalated."

Simon scowled, "What do you mean—at what extent?"

Chief pursed his lips and clenched his jaws, "I know this will sounds crazy but—this case is not in my hands anymore."

"What!?", Simon cried out in shock. He remained silent for a moment, after few seconds, he narrowed his eyes, "Then, who has this case?"

"I don't know that yet.", Chief replied. Simon closed his eyes and wrinkles appeared on his forehead. "Then what about the promise we made?" Facing Simon, who was shocked just as he predicted chief replied with great difficulty, "Sigh! All I can say that I am sorry Simon! But we need to drop this case for our own good."

"How could you!", Simon rebuked.

"Period!", Chief said. He knew where this conversation would be heading to if he didn't end it forcefully. And he didn't want to prolong this conversation any longer. Because as a senior it was his responsibility to remind their juniors of their place. But if they couldn't perform well or if their life was in danger than they possess the authority to suspend them or strip them off of their rank.

"No! I can't let this opportunity go to waste like this! I've waited so long for this. I can't let it go like this."

"Period!", Chief repeated but this time he raised his voice a little.

Simon realized by sensing the resolve in chief's voice but he still insisted. "Even Risa would have never agreed to this!", Simon disapproved of chief's decision.

"PERIOD!"

Chief yelled and glared at Simon. While Simon stared back. Chief's breathing became haggard for a moment. Silence reigned the room. After a pause chief looked away and said in a depressed tone, "Don't push your luck anymore, or I'll have to suspend you. This case is over and that's it! (pause)— I gave you this case over my authority and now I am taking it back for your own good (pause)— and that's an order, either you like it or not."
