Chapter 50 - Portion 19: The Employment

Lyana Debaux's POV

I was looking at Edmond that was immaculate in his shirt and waistcoat with matching breeches. We did not have any coat or cloak to wear as we just steal the essentials for our disguise. I was looking around the street before I saw the familiar name of the road that has been mentioned in the book.

"There!'' I said as I was pointing at the street before Edmond was grabbing my hand and we were crossing the streets. The carriage was around before we were safely on the other side of the road. I was smiling before we were walking toward the mansion that stood elegantly right now.

It has not changed at all as I was smiling. I can see that my ancestral home has been here since the 18th century. Edmond and I were standing in front of the door before I was knocking on the door. We waited before a butler was answering the door. He looked at me and Edmond before he was scowling at us.

"The door for the servants were on the back," he said with a hint of anger before I was trying to explain to him.

"Oh, but we're not—" and then it was cut from my mouth when the butler was pulling our hands and he was dragging us inside the house as the front door closed.

I was looking around the parlor and it was amazing. I can see the portraits of my ancestors before I was being shoved into the kitchen and Edmond was being held by the butler.

"Make sure she knows the rules of the house and please show her the back door for the servants. The front door was for guests only," the butler said before he was dragging Edmond off from the kitchen as I was calling after him.

"Wait!" I said before I was being pulled roughly by someone. I turned to look at a middle-aged woman that was known as Mrs. Kim.

"Now, I know that you're new to all of this but your recommendation from the highest ground so I have no restriction to get you off the job. What's your name?" she asked as I was looking at her.

"Lyana, madame," I said as I was looking at her before she nodded.

"The servants will be going through that door," she pointed at the back door that was near the kitchen before she was moving and I was following her like a puppy.

"You will be serving His Lordship before he went out every day. He will be down for breakfast and it was your duty to make sure that you will have all his needs be fulfilled. Is that understood?" She asked as she was pulling out a tray and she was giving it to me. I held it as the housekeeper was putting some stuff on it.

There was a teapot, a cup, and a saucer before she was putting some cakes and croissants. I was looking at it before my stomach growled. We did not have time to eat today as the barmaid refused to sell us and I don't have any money.

I guess I have to work than to earn it.

"Now, you will be giving this tea to His Lordship in the receiving room. Off you go," the housekeeper said before I was making my way through the empty hallway and I was looking around, trying to find the way to the receiving room.

"It's in here," the butler hissed at me before he was opening the door and I was getting inside before he warned me to keep my mouth shut before I was nodding at him.

I was walking toward the coffee table that there was a silhouette on the sofa as the smoke was coming out from the pipe that His Lordship was smoking.

Urgh, I hated smokers!

I was putting the tray down before I was setting out the tea and the cup as well as the cakes and croissants. I was about to leave before His Lordship was gripping my wrist. I shrieked before I was looking at the deep blue eyes.

"I never have seen you before. Who are you?" He asked as I was looking at the butler that was standing in the far corner of the room. He nodded at me to answer His Lordship before I was looking at the floor again.

"I'm the new maid that was hired by you, milord," I said before he released me and I was stepping back from his space. He rose from the sofa before I was walking away from him a bit.

"What's your name?"

"Lyana, milord,'' I said as I was still looking at the floor. I don't dare to meet this man's eyes as it was too intense.

"Look at me, a maid when I was talking to you," he said before I was looking at the blue eyes again. Then that same blue eyes were regarding the butler that was at the end of the room.

"Bastien, I want this maid to be my maid. Send her to my room in the morning to prepare for my chamber," His Lordship said before he was waving his hand dismissively before I was scurrying away from the man and the room.

I think I need some fresh air and I have to find Edmond as well.

Edmond Lattone's POV

As Lyana was being instructed in the kitchen by the middle-aged woman, I was being dragged by the butler to the backyard of the house. I went through the back door before we were in the stables and I was looking at the groomsmen that were tending to the horses.

"You will be at the station here. Do you have any recommendations at all?" The butler asked as I was looking at him before he was releasing me from his death grip.

Man, this man can kill me.

"But I thought I have been recommended by someone before we're here?" I asked him as he was arching his eyebrow at me.

"Only the maid that was being recommended but you, on the other hand," he said as he was looking at me with disgust. I rolled my eyes inwardly before I was looking at him, staring at him for what he will say after this.

He cleared his throat before he was calling for the stable boy and I was looking at the young boy. He was looking at me before he was looking at the butler.

"You will show him everything that he needs to know to groom a horse. Now, start to work," he said before he was leaving us and I was looking at him. I think he could not be any rude but he did.

"Hi, my name is Howard. Nice to meet you," the young boy said to me as I was taking his hand. He smiled before I was introducing myself as well.

"Hi, my name is Edmond," I said before the young boy was surprised.

"Something's wrong?"

"No, it's just…your name was the same as His Lordship. That's all,'' the young boy said before he was showing me what to do in the stables. He introduced me to the horses that His Lordship has and I was nodding at them.

"And what is his name?" I said as I was pointing at the black stallion before it neighed at me. The young boy looked at it before he told me.

"Oh, that's Maximus, His Lordship's horse. Only he can touch him and me. I was the groomsman that was responsible to feed him, keep him well," Howard said as I was nodding at him.

"Do His Lordship usually went for a ride?" I asked him as I was looking at the black stallion. It seems to speak to me through its eyes.

"Hmm, in the morning usually. He would go for a ride for hours before he came back," Howard said as I was looking at the young boy before he was showing me what to do.

He showed me the hays, the brush to brush the mane of the horse, then he showed me how to clean their stables. I was smiling as I was learning through my eyes before I was nodding at him.

"Well, I think that would be all, I supposed for today," Howard said as I was looking at the mansion.

I wondered what Lyana was doing right now.

"So, where do we sleep, usually?" I asked Howard before he was pointing at the small cottage that was for the whole servants, I supposed.

"Some of the maids and servants were sleeping at their quarters but we stay outside so that whenever the horses were acting up, we will be quick to calm them down. His Lordship hates to be woken up during his night sleep," Howard said as I was looking at the young boy. I nodded in agreement.

"I could not agree more myself," I said as I was staring at the mansion that stood still in front of me.

I think I have to find Lyana before we go to sleep and sort this mess out.
