Chapter 52 - Portion 21: The Ancestor

Edmond Lattone's POV

I was trying to control my anger right now when I saw that bastard was putting his hand on my Lyana's wrist. I cannot help it but get angry when Maximus neighed beside me. I closed my eyes before I took a deep breath and I was walking toward them.

"Milord, your horse," I said before I was holding the reign of Maximus before I was giving the reign to His Lordship. I was glaring at him but the bastard was not having it when he focused on Lyana the whole time.

That bastard smirked before he was moving to mount the horse and looked at Lyana as she was looking at everything but his face.

"Hiya!" He said as he was kicking the horse to move as his friend was moving behind him as well.

"Now, that's what I call important information," I said as I was looking at Lyana before we're locked our eyes together. I was feeling angry but I was trying to control it so that Lyana will not be the end of receiving my anger.

And I hardly have been angry my whole life.

I was looking at her before Lyana was fidgeting her fingers. She did that when she was nervous or she was being uncomfortable. I would think uncomfortable would be the answer in this situation.

"So, anything you want to share with me, madame?" I asked her as she was staring at the ground. I clicked my tongue before I was pulling her chin roughly and I was looking at her beautiful face. Her eyes were brimming with tears.

Again with the crying and I felt horrible right now.

I sighed before I released her chin and Lyana was looking at the ground again. I was standing in front of her before I was moving away from her. But Lyana stopped me when her hand was on my wrist.

"Please, I can explain," she said before I was arching my eyebrow at her. She sighed before she was looking at me as she blinked away the tears.

"It was yesterday when I was being the maid that served His Lordship's tea. Then, he asked me to be his maid and I did wake him up this morning in the unorthodox way possible," Lyana said as she sighed.

Wait, was she…

"I opened the curtains and he was being grumpy. I talked to him as I know that in this period, we did not do it but I have to. It was too…tempting to show him that not everyone will be happy with him," Lyana said before she was crossing her hands. I smiled at him.

"And then, what happened? He told you that you don't have to be formal with him when you're alone," I said as I was clenching my hand into a fist. Lyana rolled her eyes at me.

"Of course he would be flirting with me. I ever heard that his friend, Dow or something, told him not to play with me. And they were speaking English," Lyana said before she scoffed.

"As if I did not understand the language," she said before I shrugged.

"Well, at this time, France's relationship with England was not that strong, and knowing the language would be a rebellious move during La Viva Résistance," I said as I was looking at Lyana. She sighed before she was shaking her head.

"I know but I think we need to snoop around to see where that Tanzanite of Africa was around here or not. I think it would be closer than we think," Lyana said as I was chuckling at her. Just now she was crying and now, she was being herself in a matter of seconds.

I think my life will never be bored again.

"So, what do you say? Shall we snoop around?" Lyana asked me as I was looking at her. Her blue eyes shone and I think I have my answer right away.

"Shall we?" I said as we went inside the mansion and hoping that the butler and the others were not curious about us wandering the mansion.

Lyana Debaux's POV

"I know for a fact that His Lordship will not be coming home until later, in like 2 hours so we have that time for the snooping," Edmond said as we were walking inside the kitchen through the backdoor before we were looking around.

I don't see anyone before I was nodding at Edmond and we were making our way upstairs. The stairs were grand and if I have my hook and grope, I can just get in the ceiling without anyone noticed.

Well, maybe except Edmond. He's perceptive that way.

I was looking around the hallway before I was looking at the familiar portraits that were hanging on the sidewall. I was looking at them before I was coming to the familiar face of someone that I might now.

"Edmond, look," I whispered to him before Edmond was looking at the portrait and stiffed. I think he saw the resemblances as I did.

"Well, what do you think?"

"No, it cannot be," he whispered before he was looking at the other portraits as well. He was looking along the hallway before he stopped at the end of it all, the starter of these hanging portraits.

"What is it?" I asked him as I was dying to know what he was thinking right now. He was staring at the first portrait before I was looking at his expression and they softened.

"Edmond, what is it?" I asked him before Edmond turned to look at me as I was arching my eyebrow at him. He sighed.

"I don't think that you bring us to the wrong address. It must be before the revolution started because this house," Edmond said as he was pointing at the house, mansion really, as he sighed.

"It's my family portraits that started with the first generation of Lattone as well," Edmond said before he was touching the portrait that was in front of us.

Hold up, his family?

"Wait, I heard the name of His Lordship that his friend called as well. He said 'Lattone'. Could it be that His Lordship was…"

"My ancestor? Oh yeah, I think we got that part right. I mean," Edmond said as he was moving to the portrait that looked kind of like him with the familiar eyes.

"This is my picture when I was 15 years old. I mean, in the present day. I cannot believe I looked like one of my ancestors," he said as he was laughing at the portrait. I nodded.

"I guess you're very lucky then," I said as I was looking at the portrait again before I turned to look at Edmond. He nodded grimly.

"Yeah, I am but it's not the time to dwell on this. We have to find the gem. I don't want to be inside His Lordship's study room when he got back," he said before he took my hand and I was showing him the study room that I have to clean up this morning as well.

"Well, nothing's here," I said as I was looking at the bookshelves before Edmond was whistling at me. I turned to look at him before he was pointing at something. It was safe that was built at this time and era.

"Okay, let's crack it," I said as I was smiling like a maniac right now. My kleptomaniac was tingling before Edmond stopped me.

"What are you doing?"

"Cracking this safe, duh. We have to see what was inside," I said before I was patting his hand and I was moving to crack it. It was built from metal and the lock was interesting. I was smiling wickedly before I turned to look at Edmond. He arched his eyebrow at me.

Then, I pulled something from my hair.

"Why do you have bobby pins? They don't invent that until the 20th century," he hissed at me as I was rolling my eyes at him. I was moving to make sure that I have space to work with this safe.

"Give me some space, will you? I need to be in my zone, okay," I said as I was working on the safe before Edmond was mumbling behind me.

"Not that it would be good for your image when I know that you work on the safe. It just made me confident that I have to turn you in even more,"

"Ouch, thanks for the honesty," I said before I was cracking the safe and it was popping up. I was opening the safe and we were stunned to see what was inside.

"Et voila! I think we have found out the gem, don't we, Lattone?" I asked before Edmond was glancing and me as I was looking at him. I smirked before the horses were being heard.

"Shit, we have to go but leave the gem be. We come back for it later," Edmond said before he was closing the safe and we were out of the study room like nothing had happened.
