Chapter 27 - Chapter 26 - Maddie

The car was silent as we listened to James.

"I know a place that's cut off from the rest of the world. Sadly, this place is full of power hungry assholes. If we want to go there, which still, horrible, horrible option, everyone needs to know how to defend themselves."

Luckily for me, I was all set. Not only could I slay with a shovel, I was pretty good at fencing. I could probably handle a spear, and I'm pretty good with a rapier or sabre. My speed is the real key to using these efficiently, because they aren't made for killing, and are very light.

"There are people there that would hurt you if they found out that you know me, so if we decide to go there, just be prepared," He warned.

"Well, it seems like our best option," Raven said.

"We won't have to run from the police, we won't need to camp in forests. Seems reasonable," Ayro added.

"We should still consider the cons. These people may attack us for no apparent reason," Crystal said. She was doing that freaky thing where she talked without using her voice. It was a bit unsettling, hearing her voice without seeing her mouth move, but it was better than James translating for her all the time. Sometimes I could see her hands moving as she talked. I guess it was habit for her to sign now, even though she could speak again.

"I think the pro's outweigh the cons," Alex piped up.

Oh right. Options.

"Going there seems better than staying here, constantly being followed by police. Plus, that weird stalker we have probably won't be able to find us," I added.

James let out a sigh. In seconds, we were surrounded by blue smoke. It took a few moments for the the smoke clear, revealing an empty meadow. The car was no where to be found. James must have gotten rid of it on the way here. I turned around, and in front of us was a palace. It was gigantic. It looked like it was made of marble, with some spires made of gold. There we're some windows that seemed to be framed in the precious metal as well. The palace was absolutely amazing. I hadn't seen a building quite as beautiful as that one in my life. The architecture was something to marvel at. Whoever designed this place needed a promotion.

"Everyone follow me," James commanded. He sounded exhausted. Using his abilities must have drained his energy.

Eventually, we wound up at the front gate. We were asked questions about who we were and what our intentions were, probably normal security stuff. When we were finally allowed inside, James led us through a maze of corridors and rooms. I take back my congratulations in the architect who built this. They need to make less complicated buildings.

After a bit of walking, we reached an armory. There were all sorts of weapons, as well as armor. They came in all different colors, with some being the original dull silver.

"Each of you grab a dagger and extra weapon of your choice. You'll need probably need it," James said grimly.

I picked up a thick dagger. There was a sheath for it, so I sheathed it before putting it in my pocket. I grabbed a rapier as well, and it's scabbard. I hooked the scabbard to my belt, putting the sword in with ease. I saw that everyone else was choosing their weapons as well. Crystal had chosen a bulky knife and some throwing cards. Ayro had chosen a smaller knife and a bow. He was currently collecting as many arrows as he could. Alex had chosen a larger knife, as well as a battle axe. Raven grabbed a small dirk, then looked around. She eventually chose a mace as her second weapon. Everyone was still going through their options and being indecisive.

I went to stand by James. I hadn't spoken to him other than in group conversations, so I figured I would chat a bit.

"Why would the people want to harm us?" I asked.

"Because you're all with me. I don't have many friends here, just enemies. And since you guys don't have abilities, they'll pick on you. Having weapons may deter them a bit, so I brought you here," He explained. He looked exuasted. His eyelids were drooping, and he looked like he was going to fall asleep right there.

"We should get you to a bed soon," I said.

He nodded.

"I still have to get you guys to my house, though. I can't fall asleep yet," He said, yawning.

Everyone stayed with their original weapon choices. James led us through the palace again. We went up to the highest floor using a huge staircase. At the end of said staircase was a huge door. James unlocked it, promptly collapsing. Alex quickly swooped in to catch him, then carried James to the nearest bed. When I stepped into the room, the only thing I could do was look in awe. This place was beautiful.
